Free Adventure Games - The Official Thread of Wonder and Amazement!!

Adventure games aren't dead, they're merely hiding out in the dark shadowy corners of the Internets, ready to leap out and pounce on you when you least except it! I just think it's high time we brought some of the dark shadowy corners to light. Every once in a while, a thread will get posted here about some free adventure game, a dozen or so people play it, post hints to fellow gamers that have gotten stuck, and invariable a few people will recommend other similar games they've played, but then by the end of the day, the thread has sunk into the oblivion of Page 2.

So, I'm thinking, why not have a one-stop thread to let people know what's available? It could be updated as new games are discovered/released. I know about several, so I'll get the thread started with a few.

The game takes place at an unknown point in a dystopian future in Australia, where the Earth has been significantly damaged by pollution or nuclear fallout. The game's backstory is introduced via a comic book, drawn by well-known comic artist Dave Gibbons, that tells the story of a young boy called Robert who is the sole survivor of a plane crash in "the Gap" (the name applied to the Australian Outback at the time of the game). Too young to fend for himself, Robert is adopted by a local group of Indigenous Australians, who teach him the skills he needs to survive in this harsh new environment; they name him Robert Foster, partly due to him being fostered by them and also because of the discovery of an empty can of Foster's Lager, an Australian beer, found near him at the crash site.

After Foster has reached adulthood, he is kidnapped and his tribe annihilated by storm-troopers sent from Union City by its all-powerful computer LINC. Interestingly, Union City mentions prominent suburbs and train stations found within Australia's largest city, Sydney, leading some to speculate that Union City was once Sydney. This was confirmed in a 2005 interview with the Australian gaming magazine, PC PowerPlay.

Foster manages to escape from his captors as the helicopter transporting him back to Union City crashes just after entering the dome, leaving him and his robot friend, Joey, to find out why they were brought there and where to go next.

Joey's personality is stored on a small circuit board, which can easily be inserted and removed from many types of robot bodies. This allows Joey to change bodies as the situation requires, provided his circuit board is not damaged. Joey, however, is not always happy about Foster's choice of body for him.

You play the role of fictional Lovecraftian occultist and paranormal scholar Friedrich Wilhelm von Junzt, celebrated author of Unaussprechlichen Kulten, a volume exploring the blasphemous worship of ancient and alien eldritch beings. But through all your investigations and studies, your unwelcome scrutiny has not escaped the attention of certain dark forces; as Nietzsche said, “If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

Something oozing from the black heart of the abyss has followed you to the very door of your Düsseldorf study with an eye to curtailing your research into Things Man Was Not Meant To Know; safe for now in its reinforced arcane security, but not indefinitely, you must determine the nature of your pursuer and procure the necessary components to send it back to the Cyclopean ruins from whence it shambled.

CHIVALRY IS NOT DEAD
Developed by: Deirdra Kiai Productions
Released in: 2007
Genre: Point & Click/Fantasy/Comedy
Download Size: 7.7 MB
Download Link: http://chivalry.deirdrakiai.com/download.html
My Rank: 4/5 (Short but sweet. You have a lot of different options on how to complete the game, and a variety of alternate endings, so it's fun to play over again.)
Completion Time: 30 Minutes
Chivalry is Not Dead is a game. It is also a story. Not the kind that unfolds passively, but more like the bedtime stories you may have heard when you were younger, where you got to periodically interrupt and change the outcome.

Chivalry is Not Dead is a cartoon fairytale. It is also a social commentary of sorts. To be honest, it doesn't seem to very sure what it is. It does, however, try its best to be entertaining.

Chivalry is Not Dead is not an epic. Like a bedtime story, it'll be over in an evening, but also like a bedtime story, it won't always be the same every time you play it.

Chivalry is Not Dead stars a horribly disfigured creature named Phlegmwad (whose head is conveniently covered by a paper bag), employed as an assassin for the evil Lord Horrible. His first task is to kill the good Queen of Everything. Or is it the evil Queen of Everything, and the good Lord Horrible? What do good and evil mean, anyway? This, in the end, will be up to you to decide.

As Grace and Trip's fight plays out, unscripted, in real time, you must make quick decisions about what to say to keep their marriage from disintegrating. There are no puzzles, but it is a fascinating piece of technology. What other game out there lets you say anything you want?

The game loosely mirrors a portion of the series' plot, beginning with the impending destruction of Arthur Dent's house and subsequent demolition of the Earth by Vogons.

After being rescued from open space by the Heart of Gold and figuring out how to activate the Infinite Improbability Drive, the player is hurled through space and time, assuming the roles of Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Trillian at various intervals. (The question of the player character's identity at any time can be answered by the innovative WHO AM I command.) For the majority of the game, Arthur Dent is the main player character.

NOTE: This version of the game was released by BBC on their website to commemorate the 20th Anniversary and to promote the new H2G2 radio series. It incorporates some limited graphics, but is basically the same game. There are two different versions, containing different graphics on their website.

King's Quest: Quest for the Crown, a revolutionary game designed by Roberta Williams and released in 1984, epitomizes the adventure gaming experience. This game was the first of its kind that allowed the player to interact in an entirely original 2.5D world, and can be credited as the game that started graphic adventure gaming on the PC altogether. King's Quest was not only groundbreaking, but also history in the making, and was followed by seven more games bearing the King's Quest title.

In 1990, Sierra released a remake of the original King's Quest game with newer technology and graphics (using their SCI engine, 16 color EGA graphics, sound card and mouse support), which ended up being a total market failure. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that Sierra ever had or will have any thoughts of making an even further updated version of King's Quest 1, because they would most likely lose money. That's where the Anonymous Game Developers decided to take over. Our aim was to remake King's Quest 1 with the same level of quality as Sierra's remake of Quest for Glory 1. We believe that the enhanced gaming experience for King's Quest fans has justified our months of hard work for no pay or credit.

King's Quest II was the sequel to the original King's Quest game designed by Roberta Williams. Many people regard this to be the game most in need of an upgrade. Several people were discontented with this sequel, believing the puzzles were illogical and the storyline was too sparse. Additionally, the graphics, which were impressive for its time, are now painfully outdated, and several computers cannot even run the game with sound anymore! To make things even worse, this classic is no longer available in stores.

The King's Quest II+ VGA remake is similar to AGDI's King's Quest I VGA remake, which upgraded the graphics and interface of the original King's Quest game, but this time there's added storyline, puzzles, art, music, atmosphere, depth, culture, and more - basically, the whole nine yards!

Yahtzee's Mythos series games (5 Days a Stranger etc....) are really really good. My vote also goes to a game called Missing it's pretty linear and simple but very atmospheric.

edit:Oh shit Beneath a Steel Sky is freeware now? Everyone must play that game.

Can you open the stone portal and unleash the power within? I bet you can't.

So, this is my little flash game. Not so much a game, I suppose, as a little interactive world of bizarity. But it is possible to 'win', so it's going under games. If you want help, click the little question mark.

Ooooooooooooooh!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I think I might like this genre. I might've played these types of games before but don't quite remember if they're good or not. But thanks a bunch for the links and I will give them a try when I get a chance.

Heh, Broken Sword 2.5 looks awesome. 2D game with 3D cut scenes.

Revolution's page is ass, but I really should check out BS4.

Cool thread.

I've played 5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic and Trillby's Notes and they are definitely worth a look, despite being somewhat overwritten. I can't wait to check out some of these other games.

Lure of the Temptress was Revolution's very first adventure game and work began on it in 1989, even before Revolution's inception as an actual games development company. From the start our aim was to consider the contemporary adventures of the day and then bring something new to the genre. From this came the Virtual Theatre engine. VT allowed in-game characters to wander around the gameworld independently of each other, living their own lives and doing their own thing. Another feature allowed the player to give direct orders to Helper characters - in this case Ratpouch - who would then go off to perform the task. These technology concepts were certainly unique, though Revolution were not sure how to develop them further in subsequent games. Nonetheless, the result was a quirky and entertaining adventure game that kicked off Revolution's fondness for characterization and in-game humour.

IMPORTANT When the game first begins, move the cursor to the menu at the top of the screen and RESTART the game. This bypasses the copy protection system.

Ever since a meteor landed in the back yard of Dr. Fred and Nurse Edna’s Victorian mansion, bizarre things have been happening. First, their mutant son, Weird Ed, dropped out of school. Then patients started disappearing from Country Hospital. And now this strange event is affecting the lives of innocent (and even some not-so-innocent) teenagers. In fact, a girl named Sandy is being held captive in that musty old mansion right now. Sandy’s boyfriend, Dave, has lots of friends who need you help to sneak in - and sneak her out. Now exactly how it all ends up depends entirely on which trio of friends you send in there. And which inhabitants you encounter. In fact, the farther you get inside the mansion, the more weird characters you’ll meet. There’s Nurse Edna - who’s as nasty as she is ugly. There’s a disembodied Tentacle who wants you to make him a rock star. And a host of others, who all have their own crazy quirks you’ll have to deal with. Everyone in there seems to be working for Dr. Fred. But the question is: “Who is Dr. Fred working for?”

Completion Time: 45 Minutes (Getting a good ending might take a little work, but it's still Easy)

Driving in the middle of nowhere, a group of friends run over an old man. The resulting chaos (or not) is a multi sided Flash game called Move or Die, masking it's complexity behind two facades. One is a convincingly scripted and acted movie, the other an emotional intelligence test.

On a practical level, you are asked to decide what the best course of action is, depending on the situation, and then persuade those who disagree to follow suit. The options open to you are presented clearly, and the responses of the game's characters never break your suspension of disbelief. If your judgment is off, you will eventually reach a lesser ending, quickly remedied by the scene rewind save system. [review by bigbossSNK]

Sea of Glomp really pulled me in with its imaginitive creations, gorgeous visuals and fun gameplay ideas. Little touches like biting the fish hook and having to swim to a new body when you die bring a smile to your face, and figuring out puzzles is a challenge I was always happy to undertake. On the down side, navigating the massive sea can be a chore, as you're never quite sure what's an obstacle and what's part of the foreground. The solution? Swim forth and see if you bump into it. As always, Sea of Glomp encourages you to try things out in order to see the results. Unfortunately for gamers who weren't raised on the tough-as-nails adventure games of yore, frustration may set in early on. If you stick with it, though, Sea of Glomp won't fail to reward you. Inventive, compelling and stuffed with creative ideas. Welcome back, nostalgic adventuring!

This is the story of one such person, a woman who was considering leaving her boyfriend for good. She was confused, and desperate. The owner told her, "Can you come here tomorrow night? I have a special message that I want to give you. Maybe it can help you make the right decision." The next night, the woman came back to the bar.

Genre: Point & Click/Sci-Fi/Horror/Comedy
Download Size: 1.6 MB (Flash)
Download Link: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/404463

Completion Time: 10 Minutes (Easy)
A great looking game that blends Hapland-type gameplay with a point and click adventure. Help a worm-like space visitor work its way to and through the house by clicking on objects to see what they do. Interesting twist: you grow larger by... well, you'll see. May be a little too graphic for kids due to some depictions of violence.

Three classic free text adventure games from the early 1980s and some extremely frightening ActionScript make, well, this. You can play all three full games in Flash. Save and restore functions are included. Hopefully it's good for at least a little nostalgia!

Thank you for posting this.

Of those, I've played BASS and FOTAQ. I thought both were really fun. I can't wait to try some of the other games.

Excuse me if you already answered this (I just skimmed through the thread), but which of those is your favorite?

Awesome thread...

I must confess that I tried to start with Chzo Mythos some time ago, but got terribly stuck with 6 Days a Stranger (and then I remembered why I don´t play more adventure games... because I suck at them).

I need to give it another chance.

The first two King's Quest remakes are really, really good, especially King's Quest II+ (I haven't played the 3rd one much). They improve vastly over the originals, not just because of the graphics and speech, but because of all the other little additions like updated dialog, puzzles, and storyline.

I also really liked The White Chamber. It's a little short but not too short (about three hours for your first play though) it has really nice art for a freeware game and is IMO the creepiest adventure game I've played, freeware or commercial. (Edit: Well, second creepiest, I forgot about I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream) It's obviously heavily inspired by Silent Hill.

The Chzo games are supposed to be good too, but I've just started playing them (sorta what inspired this thread).

Sure. I'll try to note if there's a Linux or OSX version available. Most of them probably don't though, unless it's a browser based game (Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide) or will run on ScummVM (Beneath a Steel Sky, Flight of the Amazon Queen).

Jayisgames review:
http://jayisgames.com/archives/2007/08/the_sea_of_glomp.php

Great thread, and subscribed.

The ones I've played are the Zorks (wasn't there another free game that came out around Zork: Grand Inqusitor?) and Beneath a Steel Sky (good game - mixture of clever and annoying puzzles but the writing is mostly stellar.) Really interested in checking out the Yahtzee Croshaw stuff - never even knew he had some games to his credit.

You're welcome, but try not to get fired or anything. ;)

Really, I'm doing this as much for myself as anything. I love adventure games, I enjoy seeing amateurs try their hand at the genre especially now that most of the big boys are out of it, and I'm cheap so I like free games. :D There are hundreds, if not thousands, of free adventures games out there, so I've spent the past few days trying to sift through the heap and find the ones that appear to be quality, and then posting my results here. I haven't even played most of them yet, but I may update the list with my own personal score once I do.

BTW, if you want to check out tons more free adventures, check this site out: http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php
All the games are developed using the Adventure Games System which gives most of them a late 80's Sierra look. There's way too many to post here, and most of them probably aren't worth the effort, but I'll try to post some of the highlights here.

Here's another game from Revolution Software (makers of Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword). Their very first adventure game, which is now freeware.

LURE OF THE TEMPTRESS
Developed by: Revolution Software
Released in: 1992
Genre: Point & Click/Fantasy/Comedy
Download Size: 1.3 MB (Also works on Macs and Linux with DOSBOX)
Download Link: http://www.revolution.co.uk/_display.php?id=10
Lure of the Temptress was Revolution's very first adventure game and work began on it in 1989, even before Revolution's inception as an actual games development company. From the start our aim was to consider the contemporary adventures of the day and then bring something new to the genre. From this came the Virtual Theatre engine. VT allowed in-game characters to wander around the gameworld indepently of each other, living their own lives and doing their own thing. Another feature allowed the player to give direct orders to Helper characters - in this case Ratpouch - who would then go off to perform the task. These technology concepts were certainly unique, though Revolution were not sure how to develop them further in subsequent games. Nonetheless, the result was a quirky and entertaining adventure game that kicked off Revolution's fondness for characterisation and in-game humour.

Not exactly a adventure game (it actually doesn't even have any gameplay), but something that I stumbled across that I thought might appeal to adventure gamers and Japanophiles. It's a Japanese visual novel, translated into English. Still has the original voices, but English text. Pretty gloomy, it's about terminally ill patients at a hospital. I haven't read all the way through it yet, but it appears to be really long, several hours at least.

Joe, I don't subscribe to many threads, but this one is a keeper. Great job!

My contribution - No Action Jackson, description from AdventureGamers.com:

2h6ants.jpg
2zg555u.jpg

The game centres around Jackson, a young, role-playing obsessed nebbish who's got a D&D game scheduled with two of his friends. The only problem is that his mother refuses to let him leave the house because his grandparents are visiting. Jackson's first task is to somehow get out of the house without his mother and grandparents noticing. After finally escaping, Jackson is horrified to discover that his two friends have completely stood him up. You spend the rest of the game trying to track them down and convince them to play D&D as planned.

I just finished 5 Days a Stranger. Really good game. The graphics are pretty sub-standard and the interface is clunky, but it's got some great puzzles and is pretty well written with a solid plot. I'm looking forward to playing the next three in the series. Completion time was about 2.5 to 3 hours.

And I got a couple of new additions:

THE SNOW PRANK REDEMPTION
Developed by: Greenwild Publishing
Released in: 2006
Genre: Point & Click
Download Size: 93 MB

It's Christmas time, and it's night. Greenwild is covered in soft snow, and Bunney Conesy, Hedgie Hedgehogge and Sciur Squirrel are on a trip to visit Hedgie's grandmother. Beside the path they find an unconscious Santa Claus, and it's time to search for Sopirean root for the potion which should wake the chap up.

Thus begins Bunney Conesy's windy adventure that doesn't lack gnomes, reindeers, presents or surprising twists.
