Follow the adventure of Cedric and Victor as they try to get a demonstration up and running. It's not as easy as it sounds and they end up doing something completely different, but hey, at least they tried, eh?
Awesome topic, thanks Joe Molotov and other contributors. Here's another one for the list.
THE SHOCHU BAR Developed by: Gotmail/Idac & SG lab Inc. (A Square Enix subsidiary) Released in: 2007 Genre: Point & Click Download Size: 15.5 MB (Flash) Download Link:http://gs.gotmail.jp/
Many stories play out in a bar. It's almost like a theater.
One night, there might be a woman trying to gain the affections of a kind man, while the next night someone might be looking into the smoky hazy, thinking of someone far away....
The bar owner knows that their problems are, to some extent, basically the same. He tries to make each one a special Shochu cocktail, to ease their pain.
This is the story of one such person, a woman who was considering leaving her boyfriend for good. She was confused, and desperate.
The owner told her, "Can you come here tomorrow night? I have a special message that I want to give you. Maybe it can help you make the right decision."
THE TERRIFIC MENACE OF THE INVADERS FROM AUDIOGALAXY Developed by: genereAvventura Released in: 2007 Genre: Point & Click/Sci-Fi/Comedy Download Size: ~20 MB (Flash) Download Link:http://www.genereavventura.com/eng/play.html
An extroverted genial boy,
with a love for computers and a passion for music, the protagonist of our story,
is the classic random hero.
While he was quietly going about his business he is teleported by mistake as in many exciting adventures.
With some bravery, much irony and some cynicism, he'll fight against the evil invaders who want to enslave humanity.
Will he succeed in his mission of saving the planet and return back home in one piece?
I've decided to start adding a rating and completion time to these as I beat them, to give people an idea of what they're getting into.
SPROUT Developed by: Custom-Logic Released in: 2007 Genre: Point & Click Download Size: 1.3 MB (Flash) Download Link:http://www.kongregate.com/games/customlogic/sprout My Rank: 4/5 (Excellent graphics, cute story, interesting game play and puzzle design, would liked for it have been longer.) Completion Time: 15-20 minutes. (Easy)
A storybook adventure staring a tiny seed pod. Journey from your tiny island home to the lush forests of your dreams; explore the hand-drawn landscape and meet some interesting friends along the way.

No man slays dungeons quite like the Thy Dungeonman from the Thy Dungeonman computer game series. Hi-res graphics improve on the no-res graphics from the previous text-onlyventures. Get ye flask, fool!
WHAT MAKES YOU TICK? Developed by: Matt Kempke Released in: 2007 Genre: Point & Click Download Size: 30.6 MB (Also available for Macs) Download Link:http://wmyt.deaddog.de/?page_id=5 My Rank: N/A Completion Time: N/A
A young man named Nathan is sent by his University to find the mysterious Dr. Coppelius who disappeared about one year earlier. While searching around Coppelius last known residence, Nathan discovers that hes not the only person seeking the old man
MASQ Developed by: Alteraction Released in: 2007 Genre: Interactive Novel Download Size: 20 MB Download Link:http://www.alteraction.com/downloadpage.php My Rank: 4/5 (It's like a Choose-You-Own-Adventure book for adults, with a soap opera-ish fashion show plot replacing the "Go Back in Time and Fight Trolls" story. The comic strip graphics fit well. Contains a needlessly convoluted online registration system.) Completion Time: 45 Minutes
Even games with branching plots don't really qualify as interactive stories. Masq, a line-drawn Flash game, does, because of its sheer breadth. You're a fashion designer with a big show to stage in a few days. Everything that happens before then - the sex, death, betrayal, divorce and fame - is up to you.
SOMETHING AMISS: Chapters 1 & 2 Developed by: Tucker Bowen Released in: 2007 Genre: Point & Click/Mystery Download Size: N/A (Flash) Download Link:http://chapterone.somethingamiss.com/ My Rank: N/A Completion Time: N/A
Something Amiss is a free online adventure game about a woman who undergoes a routine MRI scan that changes her life forever. She must unravel the mystery of what was done to her - by exploring a strange new world.
A new one just came out today that I'd been watching for a while.
CHIVALRY IS NOT DEAD Developed by: Deirdra Kiai Productions Released in: 2007 Genre: Point & Click/Fantasy/Comedy Download Size: 7.7 MB Download Link:http://chivalry.deirdrakiai.com/download.html My Rank: 4/5 (Short but sweet. You have a lot of different options on how to complete the game, and a variety of alternate endings, so it's fun to play over again.) Completion Time: 30 Minutes
Chivalry is Not Dead is a game. It is also a story. Not the kind that unfolds passively, but more like the bedtime stories you may have heard when you were younger, where you got to periodically interrupt and change the outcome.
Chivalry is Not Dead is a cartoon fairytale. It is also a social commentary of sorts. To be honest, it doesn't seem to very sure what it is. It does, however, try its best to be entertaining.
Chivalry is Not Dead is not an epic. Like a bedtime story, it'll be over in an evening, but also like a bedtime story, it won't always be the same every time you play it.
Chivalry is Not Dead stars a horribly disfigured creature named Phlegmwad (whose head is conveniently covered by a paper bag), employed as an assassin for the evil Lord Horrible. His first task is to kill the good Queen of Everything. Or is it the evil Queen of Everything, and the good Lord Horrible? What do good and evil mean, anyway? This, in the end, will be up to you to decide.
Quick, funny, and violent little flash adventure came out last week.
THE VISITOR Developed by: Zeebarf Released in: 2007 Genre: Point & Click/Sci-Fi/Horror/Comedy Download Size: N/A (Flash) Download Link:http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/404463 My Rank: 4/5 (Similar to "Sprout" except instead of trying to turn a seedling into a mighty oak tree, you're trying to turn a tiny space worm into a huge, flesh eating monster.) Completion Time: 10 Minutes (Easy)
A great looking game that blends Hapland-type gameplay with a point and click adventure. Help a worm-like space visitor work its way to and through the house by clicking on objects to see what they do. Interesting twist: you grow larger by... well, you'll see. May be a little too graphic for kids due to some depictions of violence.
THE MUSEUM OF BROKEN MEMORIES Developed by: Jonas Kyratzes Released in: 2006 Genre: Point & Click/Psychological Download Size: 24 MB (Doesn't seem to be compatible with Vista) Download Link:http://museum.of.broken.memories.fizzlebot.com/MuseumSetup.exe My Rank: N/A Completion Time: N/A
The game consists of five (5) starkly different levels, or vignettes, that explore feelings of inadequacy, hopelessness, anguish, loss, and the like. The images and words expressed may seem familiar to anyone that has found themselves slowly sinking into a world of depression or self-doubt. But in the end it is a soulful journey that must be experienced to appreciate the unique form of narrative that the author, Jonas Kyratzes, has constructed.
FACADE Developed by: Michael Mateas & Andrew Stern Released in: 2005 Genre: Interactive Drama Download Size: 167 MB Download Link: http://www.interactivestory.net/ PC Prerequisite: 1.6 GHz or faster, XP / 2000 / ME, with 256MB or more of RAM and 1.0GB free hard disk space. ...An "intense, one-act play," puts you in the middle of a high-tension conflict between your two friends, Grace and Trip. As Grace and Trip's fight plays out, unscripted, in real time, you must make quick decisions about what to say to keep their marriage from disintegrating. The New York Times called Façade the "future of video games."
So over the last week or so I've played Beneath a Steel Sky, and I'd recommend it to those not very versed in the genre. I've dabbled with games over the years, but I tend to get vexed by some arcane but necessary sequence of actions. While I did get flummoxed a time or two in BASS and checked GameFAQs, for the most part things either seemed pretty logical or at least could be figured out with a bit of testing object interactions or talking to people. It doesn't let you permanently screw up, so unless you do something like save right before one of the few "act quick or die" bits, you shouldn't be able to get yourself in an unsolvable mess.
Hopefully if I can free up my schedule in the next week or so I can actually sitdown and try some of these games. Good job Molotov for keeping this thread alive and the games coming!

One of my favourite games! I almost completed it on the Amiga way back when it was new, and without a harddrive. We're spoiled nowadays, having to swap between fifteen disks wasn't a small task.
COVERT FRONT Developed by: Mateusz Skutnik Released in: 2007 Genre: Web-based point and click adventure Download Size: 4MB each (online Flash games) Download Link: PastelGames PC Prerequisite: Mouse, eyes MAC Prerequisite: Mouse, eyes
The first two chapters of a planned four part series of spy-themed point and click adventures. Surprisingly engrossing for online games, though they're a bit short.
Man, it's ridiculous that people are calling this a dead genre; most of these release dates say 2004-2007 (is that accurate?). It's a really interesting indie movement, keeping one of our most intellectual and creative genres alive. I know it's a naive dream, but someone should form a little publishing house that picks these gems up and puts them on the DS or WiiWare.

It's dead in the mainstream, but it never went anywhere for us indie gamers. Some of the best adventure games have been pouring out of small dev houses in Europe (especially Germany, it seems...) in the last few years. And The Adventure Company has gotten some of their games on casual portals (Big Fish Games, anyway), which is a very, very good sign.
I've been bumping it every few days, but I figured people were getting sick of seeing it. I'm glad that's not entirely true at least. I was a big fan of adventure gaming in the 90's (played Maniac Mansion and have been hooked ever since), and it's "death" has left me somewhat dismayed. It always makes me happy to have some excuse to promote the genre, but there's not exactly a glut of new releases for me to hype up.
[subliminal]Buy Zack & Wiki[/subliminal]
I've recently gotten turned on to the world of indie freeware adventures for the first time (beyond King's Quest I+ and II+) and so I just thought it might be fun to highlight some of what was available. To tell you the truth though, I've surprised myself at how much I've been able to find. Although these guys can't compete the pros on the technical level, they make up for that in creativity and enthusiasm, and in sheer numbers. And most of these guys (and gals) seem to be making these games for no reason other than a love for the genre, and I really respect that.
Anyway, before I start getting misty-eyed and talking about good old days, I better move on. I beat the Chzo Mythos this week (5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, Trilby's Notes, and 6 Days a Sacrifice). I gotta give those games a big thumbs-up. Although each game is great in it's own right, when taken as a whole, the series really wowed me. It starts off (5 Days a Stranger) as a slasher-movie-turned-adventure-game, which was an novel approach for a start (imagine Nightmare on Elm Street as a Point & Click adventure). The second game carries on the same theme, but the later games get a bit more cosmic. I suppose your mileage may vary based on your love of Lovecraft, Hellraiser, and be-tentacled monstrosities from other dimensions, but as a fan of all three, I loved it. There was even a healthy dose of Silent Hill and Event Horizon thrown in there for good measure.
The puzzles where really well designed too. I've read Yahtzee's article on the pitfalls of adventure game puzzle design, and it's clear from playing his games that he was trying to take his own advice to heart. He didn't rely entirely on "use Item A on Object B" puzzles, the puzzles were challenging without being obtuse, and they all seemed somewhat logical without relying too much "adventure game logic". In Trilby's Notes, he went with a text parser for a change, and although I skeptical at first, it was very forgiving, easy to use, and in the end it was much more satisfying than the standard point & click system. There was more a since of achievement that came with it, although I felt the game was actually the easiest of the three. I wish he'd used it for all three games, but regardless they're all must-play games.
Thanks for this thread Joe. I've definitely been meaning to get back into these games. I've always mainly been a console gamer but I used to play Kings Quests games back in the day on a friends computer and had tons of fun. I haven't completed one of these games since Beavis and Butthead: Virtual Stupidity or whatever it was called. With the upcoming release of Zack & Wiki, buy this game and all that, my interest in the genre is picking up again and this thread is perfect for scratching that adventure itch. So keep up the good work.
There's apparently several alternate endings. The only other one I've managed to find so far is:
Close the door, flush the toilet, stuff the toilet paper in the toilet to overflow it, fill up the bathtub, open the cabinet, plug the hair dryer into the outlet. When the monster rushes in, he slips on the toilet water and falls into the bathtub. Then you throw the hairdryer into the bathtub and electrocute the monster. He apparently dies, but before he does, he rips the guys head off anyway.
BTW, if anyone else has played Trilby's Notes or 6 Days a Sacrifice, did you figure out the significance behind "287"? I thought that it would be explained at some point, but it never was unless I missed it or the explanation flew over my head.
