Anyone else buy a PS3 just to watch movies?

Before the PS3 came out, a lot of people prophesied that the PS3 would take off similar to the PS2 because of Blu-Ray on the PS3 a la DVD on PS2.

Well here I am, owner of a PS3 with 30 Blu-Ray movies and not a single PS3 videogame.

So I'm asking, any others on here with a PS3 and not a single game for it?

I'm not one of them, but there are many that has said the same as you in other topics, like in that "PS3 owners show your games!" one. You're not alone.

No. I'm a gamer.

Well, just like the cocky Sony execs said would happen lol, I got a PS3 at launch without really wanting any of the games that were there at launch and I was still happy with it because of the Blu-ray movies.

I stopped buying SD DVDs quite a while before the PS3 came out in anticipation and I now have about 120 BD movies.

Oh snap. I only have 3 BD movies.

Yes, me. I bought and played through Uncharted, but that only lasted a week.

My PS3 time has been split 90/10 between movies and games. Maybe even moreso. Since the PS3 upconverts DVDs so well it's actually become my default DVD player - not just for Blu-Ray.

i guess if you bought it close to launch, it was probably the cheapest decent player. there are cheaper models now, yes? are they any good?

I got my PS3 just to watch Blu-Ray movies. I tried out a few of the game demos and really like them. Only problem is I don`t like the controller. I am going to try the new Nyko Zero and see if it is better if not I don`t think I will be gaming on the PS3.

From what I've gathered, there are some players with better image/sound quality outputting, but the PS3 is still the fastest player in the block. And still with a great price point too.

I bought it for both on Friday. Picked up 3 games and got 7 movies, all of which are awesome. Can't really go wrong with Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, and Folklore.

I bought it for gaming on launch and haven't watched a single Blu-ray except for the free Casino Royale (only first 10 minutes to see what HD looks like)

Yeah, great selection!

It wasn't what I got it for, but that's pretty much been its purpose. I haven't bought a game since Warhawk, I think. Rented Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, and Heavenly Sword - didn't really have the urge to buy them after the week-long rental.

You can force yourself to miss out on all the great software on this system, but don't make it sound like there's nothing to play.

You mention Resistance and Uncharted, yet completely ignore Call of Duty 4, Ratchet and Clank Future, Heavenly Sword, The Darkness, Fight Night Round 3, Warhawk, NHL 08, Unreal Tournament III, The Orange Box, The Simpsons, Super Stardust HD and Motorstorm.

These are all great games I have in my collection (except Motorstorm, never bought that one) and are certainly worth owning.

Bought with the intention of playing games; usually used as a DVD player. If I had a bigger, nicer HDTV or was more invested in having everything HD, I probably would have been more tempted to jump into Blu-Ray. And this was prior to the scales further tipping in BD's favor, format war-wise.

As prices continue to go down on players, more titles release on BD, and I find myself with a larger HDTV to take advantage of, the PS3 will likely become a very viable option for me, when stacked against similarly-priced players that don't do games. Blu-Ray can carry the weight of the purchase, and the rest is icing on the cake.

I'm sorta of an Audio-Visual whore so I'm surprised I haven't jumped on the hi-def movie bandwagon yet.

I was fairly close to biting the bullet before Xmas and getting the 360 HD-DVD addon, but I'm glad I procrastinated that purchase since HD-DVD am fail.

With that said, blu-rays inevitable dominance has definitely accelerated my plans to 'eventually' get a PS3. Was thinking about getting one later this year for MGS4 and FFXIII but I plan on getting one by the end of this month to cash-in on the 5 free blu-ray movie deal.

I bought one the other day. The movies were the excuse, there are games I want later in the year (LBP!!!) and there were games I thought I wanted (Uncharted). We haven't watched a Blu-ray movie yet and are planning it tonight.

I hope hi-def (vs. upconversion) lives up to the hype, because otherwise the system might go back, and I'll pick one up later in the year closer to LBP... when presumably they're packing in the Dual Shock... definitely not eager to pay $10 more for movies.

I don't think there are any players that have better BD video. There's nothing there to have better or not anymore I think. For audio, the only thing PS3 doesn't have for now that I think one or two high end standalone models have is passing DTS HD as a bitstream to the receiver.

PS3 was far and away the best and cheapest BD player on the market when it came out, and it still is at least among the best few, while still being the cheapest.

I, like most people on here, bought the PS3 for games, as that is it's primary purpose for me. Ridge Racer 7, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword, Assassin's Creed and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune have all been good to me.

That being said, I have 45 Blu Ray discs and I really use it a lot to watch beautiful HD movies. (Actually watching PotC3 right now, say what you will moviewise, but damn, it looks really beautiful.) I never really bought many DVD's during the PS2 era so I have plenty to catch up on with Blu Ray.

Two of my co-workers got PS3's mostly as a movie system. Ever since they heard that Blu-ray won the format war and the cheapest Blu-ray player is a PS3, they went out and bought them. Seems the PS3 is becoming up steam to sell more units.

I could understand people doing this but I can't understand how they end up posting on gaf

Will drop pants for Sony.
I only bought my PS3 for gaming, however when I saw a blu-ray movie for the first time, I could not honestly go back to dvds, so now I use my ps3 as a gaming system first and blu-ray player second.

Not really, but considering that R&C is still the only PS3 game proper I'm playing, it's kind of working out that way.

Why, yes. Just yesterday in fact. I got Training Day on blu ray too. Well, I must admit, I bought it for media sharing too. But I think the point was has anyone bought it not for gaming.

It is funny though, I bought it because WB went Blu Ray exclusive, thinking that Paramount would follow suit. Now, Paramount has announced they are sticking with HD DVD. Perhaps, had they made that announcement earlier in the week, I wouldn't have bought it.

For some time now, I've always ended up owning every console, and MGS4 alone makes me salivate, so my future purchase of a PS3 was more of a when than an if.

That being said, the temptation to pick one up has been rising sooner than I expected, and it's because of Bluray movies, not games. Ever snice I got my HDTV, I've finally been putting that HD-DVD 360 add-on to use, and I really would like to add movies like Casino Royale and a few other Bluray exclusives to my collection. The fact that the death knell for HD-DVD seems to be sounding just makes it more urgent.

Same here, I got mine a few weeks for Uncharted, UT3, and Bluray and I'm having a great time with it. And that's with a 360, too.

Love them both.

PS3 game sales do suggest there are ps3 owners out there that use the machine primarily as a movie player.

Me? I have 2 BR movies and 0 games but my ps3 is only 2 weeks old :D My ps3 will probably be used more as a BR player. Definitely will get the good exclusives though.
