Anyone else buy a PS3 just to watch movies?

the community may be bigger but its a misconception to say that the PS3s isnt EXTREMELY healthy.

Its always easy to find full and awesome games for warhawk.

resistance is one of the healthiest FPS games ive played in terms of quality and quantity of community.

These games arent gimped, youre gimping them.

Voice is gimped in those games though, i play all the big games online on ps3 and im lucky if i hear 2 pople talking everytime.

A friend of mine just bought a 20 gig PS3 from somewhere specifically for Blu-ray playback. He said he isn't interested in gaming at all. He says that the 60$ price tag of games is a bit too steep for his budget. I don't blame him.

I suppose I should add to my comments, I failed to list that I've bought ninja gaiden sigma, warhawk and uncharted. I played a fair amount of warhawk for maybe a week and haven't touched it since, I'm on the military base in sigma and I beat uncharted on normal difficulty. So it's not like I don't play anything, I also rented Lair which was horrible in every way and rented and completed heavenly sword.

It still needs to be said that I bought it for bluray first and games second though.

I don't even know why you rented Lair :lol

I don't know what the hell is the deal with voice, no one talks strategy ever, be it on Live or PSN. I have a mic but I barely ever talk because people are just chatting and singing and shit

SSHD for 10 USD? So awesome!

I definitely game on it more than I watch movies... That said I'm loving Blu-Ray, I've got 42 of the damned things vs 11 PS3 games (Not counting PSN games of course) I love the video capabilities of this thing. It is the best upscaler I've ever had.

Owning a PS3 and not owning any games for it, boggles my mind a bit, but... different strokes for different folks.

I think the majority of people with blu-ray movies and no games own a 360 or a Wii. Doesn't seem too mind boggling to me.

And does that negate the PS3's game playing functionality?

I bought mine to play GAMES. i have about 5 or so games (Uncharted, Ratchet, Motorstorm, Unreal, Warhawk) and no movies yet.. until i send in that rebate or blu rays become 20-25$ im not that interested in them.

I bought my PS3 to play games and bluray as a bonus. The reality is I occasionally play games on it but almost exclusively use it for video's at this point.

I bought my import PS3 mainly for movies at least initially. Got a US 60GB PS3 in March 07 here in Germany just to be able to watch Code A Blu Rays and to be able to use my PS2 import games. I have an extensive Blu Ray collection but I've got quite a few games as well by now.
Realistically as a gamer I probably could have waited until Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted launched, but I haven't regretted jumping onto the PS3 "early" for gaming in the least. Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword and Folklore were all very good, I even enjoyed Lair. With all the hardware revisions I got the best system for my needs while it was still available. Couldn't be more happy with my purchase.

well I'm a procrastinator.......I was suppose to sell at least 2 of them after/before getting the 2 DS3 controllers..... but as far as having 6 sixaxis in the first place, some of them were good prices I found online....and I let my brother borrow 3 of them, so when ever his friends come over they can play Warhawk or any other 4player game..... also for special occasions I pick up those 3 sticks and have them for parties/get togethers.......like for sports games, pixeljunk racers, and more...they also work well for old PS2/PS1 7 player games.....no need for the multitab and all those wires

I bought mine to sell it. Couldn't resist myself and opened it to umm.. see if it worked. Anyway when I saw how good it was I said **** it and kept it. I was a 360 fanboy up to that point and ironically did a complete 360. I've purchased 13 games.. no blu-rays yet but I really want to start on my BD collection.

Nope, bought mine at launch assuming that eventually i'd end up with the kind of immense and diverse game library that i loved with the PS2. Needless to say looks like the jokes going to end up on me, heh. Blu-ray playback has been a savior for me since i pretty much exclusively watch movies on it now and own 15 or so. First game i'll buy is HSG5 and the only other thing in the first half of the year that really interests me is MGS4. Other than that i'll wait till some of the games that caught my interest a little hit the bargain bin.

excuses? i'm sorry, but there should be no reason you have to mod it just so the triggers are actually nice to use.

and why are you talking about blacksite, pdz and vampire rain? :(

your gamertag tells all.

Uncharted > everything i listed

Why do they call it the 360? Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away

I use my PS3 for the movie & media centre capabilities.

So far I haven't picked up a single game for it (other than the two it came bundled with) and that's a situation that's unlikely to change for several months. To be honest I wasn't even contemplating getting one until at least next Christmas, but ended up grabbing a 60gig model to make sure that I could hold on to my PS2 library.

I bought it for the LULZ

No, I bought it for God of War 3 (before I played gow2, which I found dissapointing), Team ICO and LBP. Very sad that LBP has been delayed by so much and still haven't seen anything from Team ICO or anything regarding God of War 3.
Only have my free BR of Casino Royale, but last week I ordered Planet Earth and Apocalypto on BR cause I'm getting a new 1080p HDTV (probably) this week.
In hindsight it's also really good for playing and upscaling DVDs.

Just because you don't hear people using it, doesn't mean it's "gimped." It's pretty odd to have someone in the Resistance Clan games without a mic. We talk like crazy. Last night we had like 10-12 people in games, and I think only two weren't talking.

You can't force people to use a feature, you know.

Maybe you're doing it wrong. Do you know how squads work in Resistance?

Snap. It will probably stay that way too until GTA4 comes out

I get the idea that if you have a 360, then its more difficult to justify purchasing a PS3 just for gaming, as multiplatform games are pretty even on both, or better on 360.

the thing that confuses me on this thread, is that most of the posters already have a PS3. Surely then multiplatform is relevant if you've already made the console purchase?

I tend to buy a PS3 version of a multiplatform game simply because my 360 is a noisy bastard and I hate it :) whereas the PS3 is nice and quiet. I cancelled my live account as I don't play that much these days so single player is enough for me, so that isn't a reason.

If the PS3 port is really bad I'll buy the 360 version, but generally I've switched from 360 for most games and PS3 for exclusives, to the other way round, PS3 for most games, 360 for exclusives.

Not yet, but I'm thinking about it.

The only games I really want to play on PS3 are WipEout and GT5, but now it's around the same price as the cheapest Blu-ray player - so if I can get a movie player AND play WipEout in HD....

.... strongly considering it.

LoL funny you should say that. I was gonna buy one and I had the money and everything. But when I got to the store and was looking at it I though damn.. I'm gonna have to pay 50 for the online. Did a 360 and walked away :lol

I use my PS3 for games, but probably 60-70% its playing movies. It's playback is excellent, and with H263 ASP it's gotten even better. The PS3 is a bargain at the price if you want a multimedia jukebox / playback system.

I didn't buy it to watch movies, but considering my game buying has drastically reduced since the middle of last year, that's about all I've done with it. I mean hell, the only game I've actually purchased for it was Eye of Judgment, which I admittedly have a tough time playing in 480p because it looks like ass (my TV doesn't support 720p).

All of that being said, I now own around 20+ blu-ray movies. So you do the math. Still don't regret the purchase by a long shot, and figure one of these days I'll get to buying R&C, Uncharted, CoD4, DMC4, MGS4, etc.

I already had a Wii60 when I got my PS3 in August, so I bought it as a Blu-Ray player almost entirely. The only games I've purchased for it are Resistance and SSHD (the latter is great, the former = meh).

I'll use it for gaming a hell of a lot more whenever SOCOM drops.

When I buy it will be for Team Ico's next game. Uncharted helps too but only because of Amy Hennig and Simon Templeman.

As before though. I couldn't care less for it's video capabilities.

Would've worked better if you said after you bought it it'd red ring and you'd have to turn a 360 and bring it right back to the store :lol

I got my PS3 at launch and was considering selling it to a friend over seas. I ended up buying Resistance, Uncharted and Motorstorm and a bunch of Bluray Movies but other than that I strictly use the PS3 as a media player and DVD upconverter.

Most of my gaming time is spent on the 360. Its not that the one is better than the other, I just like being able to play against my friends, compare scores and and playing with xbla. It really is about the experience and in the last year Ive bought about 10games for the 360, thats unusually high for me.

Right now, the Ps3 is a disjointed experience online and Im still waiting for that one big game that unites the community and gets everything right. In game XMB is only a start, we are talking about online integration and awareness. Home seems like sony answer to a lot of these issues, hopefully they can pull something together but I doubt gamers will latch onto it without some sort of game mechanic natively built into it.

It would have been awsome if Home and LBP were one in the same.

I bought it for both games and movies.

Currently at 31 BD Movies and 17 BD Games.

And I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of standard dvd's upscaled.

Eh man you wanna sell me one for cheaps?

i had just a bought a HDTV last year and was looking for a hd-dvd player to see what 1080P HD looked like on my new TV.

I wasnt expecting to find a PS3 after the system launched, but I found one in December.

I bought it for the bluray, but then I got back into gaming.

I buy bluray movies almost weekly, and I rent or buy the good games for the ps3.

Games, games, and more games, although I do watch movies on it as well, and it's nice to know I can do that and not be risking my systems stability.

Wow, it's surprising to find out that I wasn't the only one who bought a PS3 just for Blu-Ray. It is, afterall, the best Blu-Ray player out there.
