TRAINS are everywhere in games, probably because it's easy to design a tight, linear gameplay experience as you work your way up the cars. When I get to a train level, I know I'm in for a good time. Usually. With at least two exceptions. Read on, or don't, and by all means list your own memorable train excursions.
Faves
Time Splitters Future Perfect
One of my favorite underrated FPS' from last gen, this train had it all, great level with fun setpieces and a variety of challenges in each car. And of course Harry Tipper.
Splinter Cell- Pandora Tomorrow
Some unconventional ways of traversing this train, intense moments as you shimmy along the edge and even crawl underneath it while it's in motion.
Final Fantasy 8
The Timber Train, gorgeous stuff
Goldeneye
Cool gunfight in the first cargo car, cool escape setpiece in the last car, intense close quarters corridor combat in between, it's all good baby, this is a prototypical train, improved on only by the aforementioned Time Splitters.
Ninja Gaiden 2
Despite the high bird content, a pretty cool classic Ninja Gaiden level.
Outfoxies
One of the simpler levels in this ridiculously awesome shoot'emup/brawler hybrid, the train provided a good intro level to learn the tricky game mechanics.
Covert Ops- Nuclear Dawn
I think pretty much the whole game was on a train. And I'm sure it's not as cool as I remember it, but I loved anything that was like RE back then, I was all over it.
Resident Evil Zero
A claustrophobic and promising start to what was ultimately a disappointing entry in the RE series.
WORST
Not many because generally train levels are sweeeeet
Gears of War- just a total anti-climax. An ''is that it?'' moment if there ever was one.
Shadows of the Empire- that junkyard train... it's been ten years so I can't remember precisely why I hated it, but I remember that was about when I could quit. I hated that level.
Grand Theft Auto- San Andreas
I guess it was an OK mission, but that fat prick just wouldn't aim right for me.
