Comic Con LittleBigPlanet gameplay vid + big hands-on

Check it out guys and gals. A forum member at lbpcentral.com went to Comic Con 08, and was able to log in over an hour of gameplay of LittleBigPlanet, got a pretty big hands on preview along with some new footage:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/confusedcartmans-littlebigplanet-hands-on-from-comic-con-08/

And the forum area where he's been answering questions. Don't know how regular he will be mind you:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=281

Yesterday I got the chance to play LittleBigPlanet for the first time, and what a time I had. This game is everything it’s cracked up to be and more, and I am so glad I got a chance to see it firsthand. I played it 5 different times, 15-20 minutes of playtime each turn, so about an hour and a half of total play time.

This is how it was set up: The Associate Producer of the game(his name was Eric *something*, I don’t remember his last name) played using one controller, and three others would play along with him. I got time with the character customization, level editor, and one of the single player levels, all the while I was able to ask him any questions I had, which I did. There was a tutorial level, but I never got a chance to play it. I did watch some people play it, though, and I got a chance to film a portion of it for you guys before he told me he didn’t want me filming the game. I am gonna portion off the info for each chunk I got a chance to see and play, so the information is relevant to the topic it is placed under. Anyway, here is everything I noticed playing the game:

Character Customization

* There are a huge amount of customizable items, from hats to glasses to shoes to pants to zebra outfits and everything in between.
* There is a Tron suit you can wear in the game, along with a killzone helmet and mask.
* Not only that, but there are about 25 different materials and designs that you can choose to have your sackboy made out of, including 3 types of camo.
* There are held items that you can choose from, such as a wooden sword and a magic wand(a stick with a star on the top). You can’t use them as weapons, but when you slap while holding an item you hit them with said item.
* You can slap just about any kind of sticker you can think of on your sackboy, so you can essentially make your own designs.

Level editor

* For those of you that don’t know, you can switch back and forth between flying and running around by pressing *down* on the d-pad.
* When everyone has a menu open, the menus auto-adjust to the top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right corners to keep the screen clear.
* LBP comes with a nice 10 premade vehicles or so(I drove a lowrider!), but as with everything else you can edit them as you like.
* Logs burn. You can make a log, or anything out of wood, really, and set it on fire. We made a floor full of burning logs and then we drove a monster truck over them.
* There are “triggers” that you can place to have events happen right when you want them to. For example, you can make it so halfway through swinging on a rope across a gap, the rope snaps and you fall down to another area.
* Anything you can think of, you can make. Just be careful when making a “Sonic” level or a “Mario” level, because that won’t fly on the servers. Name it something generic that won’t warrant deletion.
* If you want to make carpet, you can. All you have to do is take a picture of some carpet, apply the sticker to something thin and soft(sponge, for example), and save the item.
* If you made a kickass vehicle, you can make that vehicle collectible through your level. For example, you could reward players who made it past a particularly difficult portion of your level with a buggy you made, which they could use at any time throughout making their levels. This applies to items, such as carpet, as well.
* The size of your crater on the moon corresponds directly with the amount of items you can place on a level. This way you can have a minigame taking up a small crater, while a full, hour long level would take up one of the largest craters.

The Construction Yard

* This is the level I got a chance to play three times.
* Eric was really stressing the term “Coopetition”, which is cooperating so you can compete for the collectible items and points. For example, there was a lever that would slide a girder across a gap. It requires two people(at least) to complete. One would move the girder across using a lever, the other would grab the chunk of sponge at the other side, which the first player would now bring back with the same lever. That sponge was required to reach a certain height, so you could collect more goodies. In my case, I stood on the sponge with a friend while another guy dragged it across, and right before we got there I slapped my friend off so I could have the stuff to myself. That, essentially, is coopetition.
* The developers love to hide goodies that you have to find later. I didn’t notice all the stuff I could eventually collect until the third playthrough. If you’ve ever played Portal, and you know that usually there is more than one way to beat a level, the same applies here. The more difficult task you accomplish, the more collectibles they reward you with.
* At any point, you can bring up a sticker which is basically a live image recorded from your PS Eye. When you stick the image on a surface, it takes a picture at that moment, so you can tack yourself onto the walls in a level(or whatever else you feel like doing).

Emoting

* Emoting is awesome. Using the d-pad, you can select three different degrees of sadness, anger, happiness, and fear. For example, you press up to smile, press it again to smile big, and press it again to be ecstatic with your tongue hanging out.
* If you hold R2, the right stick becomes a controller for your right hand. The same goes for L2, the left stick, and the left hand.
* The sixaxis controls which direction your head is facing, and it was surprisingly intuitive.
* If you click and hold L3, the sixaxis controls your hips instead of your head.
* Using a combination of these, I made my guy do a pretty kickass hula dance. I forced him to do it, though, so he was pretty scared at the time.

To Sum it Up

LittleBigPlanet is so in depth, so customizable, so personal that there’s no way to sum it up in words. You could say it is our generation’s Mario; 20, 30 years from now you’ll be telling your children that you got the chance to grow up with this game, and that’s an experience you don’t want to miss. All I can say is, if you are still on the fence about buying this game, don’t hesitate.

Looks like I'm going to make some arson levels. :lol

NICe. going to read right now

Wonder if i can import my own items... xD

EDIT: really nice hands on! too bad he couldn't record much ;(

I imagine many a Disgaea tribute with fish, and other ridiculous handheld weapons :D

You know a REALLY cool idea i just had for this game....for a level.

Ok, wouldnt it be really cool if you could make a level where you can limit players us of the level editor to CERTAIN PARTS of the level. Like little puzzle sections where people have to build something to move on to the next area.
Like lets say there's a huge gap in the level and the players have to build a helicoptor or a hot air balloon to get across. But they can ONLY use the level editor at that certain part of the level.

Or i can make them start from the beginning. travel all the way to the top to get the a flying machine and then come back down and ride up the area that was only possible if you flew.

:lol

I'm so tempted to do that now. Point A to B to A to C and so on.

Macgyver level where you give the character a rope, a stick of gum, and some axel grease, and he has to make a glider? Right on! LOL

So you have parts that you will need later to build a machine to get across? Awesome idea there.

Well, it may be possible. I'm not sure that when you're playing the game that you can jump into the actual level editiong mode or not? That's what I actually just got confused on when you brought this up.

If I'm playing a level, can I bring up all of the level construction objects, so I could just let's say be a bastard and erase certain enemies that are bugging me? That would be dumb. I'm hoping they limit you to only do certain things while playing, which maybe they do.

Oh, and it would be cool to limit users to do level design in certain places only. Would allow users to think creatively. :) It might be possible. I mean, after seeing the puzzle in the game where you had to apply certain stickers to cloth a guy to activate him, I honestly have no idea what to expect! I can't believe people can just easily make those puzzles ingame. Consider my mind blown.

The creator of the level can set whether or not he wants people to be able to edit his level.

What I want is just a shot in the dark. What I want is limiting the use of the level editor to certain parts of the level. Maybe MediaMolecule will include it. That would be awesome.

Very excited for this game, but I have to file it away with Spore and Castle Crashers: COME OUT ALREADY. I'm sick of impressions and new footage and what-have-you. Just. Come. Out.

That sounds awesome.
Or hide all the different parts throughout the level and have it so they can ONLY get to the finish line if they gather all of the parts and then put them together.
A big treasure hunt. That would be awesome.

Dunno if this has been mentioned, but here is a small gameplay tidbit that I found fascinating. In the level I played at Comicon, there was one challenge that required the player to use some of the level-creation tools in order to progress. There was a humanoid figure in cardboard, and the challenge was to use your stickers to give the figure a face, arms, a body, and feet. Only by doing so could you continue. I thought that was pretty cool.

What I didn't find cool at all was that when I asked the dude guiding the demonstration how in-depth the scripting tools were for enemies, his response was "I have no idea..." -_-

Did it limit you to using the creation tools ONLY at that part?

Oh and that was in the video at the link.

Sony better market the shit out of this game... this is their mascot, and could be the next big thing. It has something that could possibly appeal in all 3 major regions also.

Hm.. seriously though, Nintendo has Mario (& Link), Microsoft has Master Chief and Sony have.. Helghast? :lol

Helghasts are great looking but no, they cannot be mascots. If LBP takes off and Sackboy turns into Sony's new mascot it would be AWESOME.

Yeah Helghasts actually could work, but Sackboys have much more wide appeal. Although I love the art in Killzone, The sackboys are far too cute.

edit- If nintendo has mario + link, why can't sony have Sackboy + helghast?:lol I know it's an odd combo, but they could be mascots for 2 different demographics.

The actual manipulability or visual dexterity of the Sackboy can be key to being a Mascot.. they can simply dress up Sackboy for different occasions or when representing different games. It's simply BRILLIANT. Sony marketing DO NOT FUCK THIS UP :lol

I think the multiple mascot thing could work but the problem is Mario and Link are pretty much franchises. Can Killzone be like that? I dunno.

What about if someone made SoTN levels? Like, the clocktower or underground passage? Bosses and everything included.

You could recreate a bunch of 2D levels, not just from Mario or Sonic. How about Metroid? Or even Kid Icarus?

I was there and the guy asks "Is there any questions" I yelled "when is it coming out?!"

October he says. *crosses fingers*

Me and a friend got to play it and I tell you, you are in for a treat. It controls well. Navigating the menus to change your sackboy was awesome. I was a flower with star glasses. It was funny though that the boss kept glitching up. It was running between 30-40 fps. Never felt like it was slowing down. With everything going on it felt smooth.

The lines for it were huuuge. I know this will be a huge hit come Fall.

There are SO many old school remakes that are about to happen. I can't wait to see some of this stuff revisited.

LittleBigPlanet looks great, but the ability to move "in and out" seems to complicate things a bit. In most videos I've seen, players often get caught on something that was in the "back" of the screen or vice versa. Hopefully it gets ironed out before release, because I'm really looking forward to the game.

I literally thought of that as soon as I posted before that. They really could use the sackboy in so many different ways to advertise. As for Killzone being a franchise? I think so, I mean resistance already is a solid one, and that doesn't have half the hype that KZ has.

I believe in Sackboy :D

Metal Gear Solid tribute would be possible, but with a platforming twist. You can arrive to large moulded NPC characters and have "cutscenes" with the moving of cardboard speech bubbles behind.. E.P.I.C. :D

after seeing for so long how important sony think lbp is and how customizable sackboy is why oh why dont sony make him peoples avatar in home/xmb? or at least give us the option? it would make everyone truly unique and it would make lbp truely synonymos with the playstation brand as a whole. either way cannot wait for this to come out

edit: sorry didnt notice the sackboy mascot talk above

One thing that caught my eye in the article about that was:

Just be careful when making a “Sonic” level or a “Mario” level, because that won’t fly on the servers. Name it something generic that won’t warrant deletion.

I wonder if they will just delete things that moderators feel cross that line? Spending hours on something and all of a sudden finding out it got deleted because of the name would be horrible - hopefully you would be contacted and have a chance to rename or something.

No it's cool. This is why I'm saying sony really needs to capitalize on this and market the shit out of it.

Here's something else that is interesting:

from ConfusedCartman's article:
The size of your crater on the moon corresponds directly with the amount of items you can place on a level. This way you can have a minigame taking up a small crater, while a full, hour long level would take up one of the largest craters.

from ConfusedCartman in the forum:
Yes, each player gets their own moon. I don't know for certain how many craters there are, but from seeing the moon I'd guess at least 10, maybe 12.

And, you can make a rec room where you just screw around, but you cannot exceed the 4 player limit.

So it sounds like each player will have a set number of craters with different sizes that will set how many levels and what size levels can be created. So once you use up your craters, you probably would replace your worst made levels with improved ones over time. Maybe as you progress, the number of craters you are assigned will able to be increased, especially if you make good or popular levels.

I keep on trying to convince myself to re-buy a PS3. In the end, this may be the only game I have for it once I do. And I'm fine with that. Planning to pick one up before October...

(I'll probably get MGS4 too, but as a non-fan, I'll wait until it's cheap... likewise with some of the other bigger franchises).

LBP will do a Little Big Poop all over MGS4, GTAIV, Resistance 2 and Gears 2 for game of the year.

I am itching to get my hands on this.

I have this feeling in my gut that Sony is going to fuck up this games Marketing.

It would be a suprise if they didn't :lol They fucked Uncharted over already.. granted that was a case where they didn't have alot of faith in a product that reviewed better than their expectations. Using a CGI movie as the TV ad wasn't all that good in my opinion, they could have VERY EASILY composed a movie-like trailer from all the in-game footage which would have looked amazing and felt like a compelling experience. Uncharted was built to feel like a movie but it wasn't marketed like one, which was unfortunate.

However, the LittleBigPlanet advertisement featuring Sackboy in the knight suit and Sackgirl as the damsel in distress hints at the possibility that Sony might just do good :D Stuff like that appeals to the masses very well when it provides a narrative built upon a commonly held folk conception (hero saves damsel in distress). Combined with that super song behind and the cuteness of the Sackpeeps I think it'll be a killer mass audience commercial.

Well hopefully it's true for that.

I think the people that were working on adverting for Sony at that time got fired or something and Uncharted was their last adverting thing they did.

Uncharted's marketing really was atrocious. Such a shame.

One of the worst videogame ads I've ever seen. It wasn't funny or catchy, you didn't even know if it was a videogame.

Interestingly enough, the "mad world" TV ad for Gears was brilliant and used quasi-in-game assets.

yeah...also, Sony was broke last year and didn't spend much on ads. This year is quite different seeing as I've already started seeing TV ads for LBP (along side MGS4/GT5:p) 4 months b4 it even comes out.

You don't have to keep bringing in Gears to the discussion :lol But to be fair it had a BRILLIANT commercial. My jaw dropped and I could not wait to play the game (eventually did at my friend's place in co-op mode).

Uncharted could have used something closer to like the Halloween (Massiveattack) trailer that their own staff cut; but definitely something more concise with a different soundtrack. It's this one: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27290.html It certainly already has the underpinnings of a movie trailer, and if carved right, could have had alot more explosive elements in it and alot more excitement. Man. -_-
