Sales of Activision Blizzard’s shooter are down 50%, but it remains 5,000 sales ahead of EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Undercover’ which is a non-mover at No3. Activision Blizzard do have reason to be cheerful however with 3 games in the All Formats Top 10: ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour’ moving to its highest ever chart position, up from No7 to No4, and ‘Quantum of Solace’ only slipping one place to No9. The rest of the All Formats Top 10 all shuffle positions with old favourite ‘Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games’ performing well, up from No9 to No5 and ‘Wii Play’ replacing ‘Mario Kart Wii’ as Nintendo’s highest charting game this week at No6. ‘Mario Kart Wii’ slams on the breaks heavily this week as sales slide 60%, putting it one place behind Ubisoft’s ‘Far Cry 2’ at No8. Sega fill the last Top 10 position, steady at No10 with ‘Sonic Unleashed’. In fact, every game in the All Formats Top 40 drops sales except Nintendo’s ‘100 Classic Book Collection’ which breaks into the Top 40 for the first time at No27.

Here is some MS spin on the end of 08 via Kotaku:
XBOX 360 RECORDS BEST EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS IN ITS HISTORY, EIGHT MILLION CONSOLES SOLD TO DATE

LONDON - 5th January 2009: Xbox® today revealed sales data showing Christmas 2008 was the biggest sales period ever in the brand’s six-year European history, with sales of Xbox 360™ almost double those of Christmas 2007[1]. Eight million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA)[2] up to the end of 2008, widening its lead over PlayStation 3 in the region to more than one million and setting the scene for further growth in 2009.

GfK-ChartTrack data shows that Xbox 360 was the fastest-growing console of 2008, with sales in the fourth quarter of 2008 over double that of the same period in 2007, spurred on by a mix of value, great games and entertainment, and the recently-launched New Xbox Experience.

Chris Lewis, Regional Vice President, Interactive Entertainment Business EMEA, said: “Christmas 2008 was a resounding success for Xbox 360. 2008 saw us grow faster than any of our competitors and we over-achieved in sales during the crucial Christmas selling period. We reduced the entry-level Xbox 360 ERP in September, understanding the need for great value, and European consumers have responded enthusiastically. With eight million consoles sold since we launched, and consistently out-selling PlayStation 3 in EMEA, we’re poised to build on this success in 2009. This success was only possible through our partnerships with retail and with publishers, with whom we’ve worked closely to build a strong ecosystem in the region and to bring value to our shared customer base. As we move into 2009 and an uncertain economic climate, we continue to be committed to offering the right blend of gaming and entertainment experiences at the right price.”

Nick Gibson, Founding Analyst, Games Investor Consulting, said: “Microsoft appears to have enjoyed an excellent end to 2008 in Europe. According to GFK Chart Track data, the Xbox 360 recorded in excess of 100% growth in December sales compared to 2007 across the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, well ahead of any other console. It also recorded comfortably the highest rate of year-on-year growth for the final quarter of 2008 overall.”

Nick Parker, Founder and Games Analyst, Parker Consulting, said: “I have seen early returns for the December 2008 sales data indicating that Xbox 360 has shown a significant sales increase year on year and furthermore is ahead of its nearest rival in terms of lifetime consumer hardware sales in the EMEA region, with an installed base of over eight million units

LBP still in the top 20!

Not a bomba.
Is LBP the new Uncharted? I could have sworn we had some Uncharted cheerleaders in the charts thread for a good part of last year cheering on the game if it made it into the top 40.

LBP deserves cheering.

I think it's a reaction to the early labelling of LBP in some quarters as a bomba. Kind of like Uncharted, except even moreso (I expect LBP will quite easily ousell Uncharted in its lifetime..I'm sure it's outsold it quite easily already compared to Uncharted in the same timeframe).

I wonder if it'll go back into the top 10 again. I hesitated to suggest it would after it dropped out the first time, but it went on to do so. Maybe if it's discounted again?*

* In my local Game, at least, in the last week it's been a full price game in a practical ocean of discounted next-gen software, which can't be helping it.

Gears 2 is really hanging on in that Top 10, I know it recently had a drop to £30 in some stores after Xmas to help it along, but given the price cuts most games have seen over Xmas time (hai Mirror's Edge, LBP, Prince of America, Saints Row 2 etc) its done pretty darn well to keep selling so well within its RRP range.

CoD:WaW will no doubt do a CoD4 and sell forever at £40 (and sell out whenever there is a slight price drop on it). Infinity Ward have created a monster!

LBP has been charting for 7 weeks now in UK, with 18th being the worst place...:lol

Well, they sure know how to present themselves in an incredibly positive light without saying "Xbox 360 was the best selling console in 2008" or "Xbox 360 has a higher installed base than PS3 and Wii" or "We sold the most software in 2008".

Not actually that important
Hang in there Shaun White Road Trip!
Awesome game.

And hopefully Sega puts a lot of money behind the development of Sonic&TBK, it's was obvious to everyone here they should've made the Wii the lead sku for Unleashed, the game would've had crazy sales, especially in the UK, if at least as good as the PS360 version instead of the MOAR WERESONIC approach.

Gears has consistently been top 10 since release, even at £40 while all the other big titles have been ~£20.

It has done amazingly well and far better than what I expected. I really didn't think the game was that big over here.

I wonder when we're likely to see yearly numbers for various PAL countries. I'm rather curious to know how much of a lead the Wii has in Australia for instance. And how the PS2 continues to do.

37 (26) PS3 Resistance 2 (Sony Computer Ent.) :)

EDIT: Well, you only said Resistance, so that could be Resistance 1 as well, and that game is nowhere to be seen in these charts, that is true :)

According to the latest ELSPA numbers for December, Resistance 2 has sold at least 100k copies in the UK now, i think that is fairly good. Not as good as Resistance 1 (not yet at least), but i think that Resistance 1 was bundled relatively much with a Playstation 3 console, so i dont know fair it would be to compare the sales preformance between Resistance 1 and Resistance 2 just yet.

NoE are fucking stupid for not getting more Laytons out there. Idiots.

They even told some German journalists that it would be their big DS Christmas title and that it will have a big ad campaign. Now that was true, however I was unable to get it for a reasonable price (i.e. not more than 29.99 EUR)

Looks like Far Cry 2 has some legs. I wonder what the LTD numbers are worldwide (they announced it sold a million nearly 8 weeks ago). Despite being released with a clusterfuck of other games the sales look good.

Seriously.

NoA needs to send some marketing people over to NoE and NoE needs to send those geniuses that bring over niche titles from Japan to NoA.

The marketing for it was fine. The ads were great and have created incredible demand.

The dpt that handles the supply of the game should all be bloody fired tho.

Hell no. NoE's marketing this gen has been godly compared to NoA's, and I personally don't even see much wrong with NoA's marketing.
