Better than anything off Variety. Not blowing me away, but I like it.

Hey, I liked Variety quite a bit!

On topic, It's catchy and funky. Likey. I don't think you can get much more japanese-looking than Kameda, the bassist. Speaking of him, I like his playing, and since he is the producer, I also like his approach in the albums. Polished yet raw. Yup, still a fanboy.

Is it up on iTunes?

Seriously, this is THE BEST news I've had all morning, and it started out really crappy. Song is amazing. My day has now done a complete 180, and things are looking up.

whats the second song she sings? i love that pop-jazz stuff.
It's called Marunouchi Sadistic.

If you like this song you should absolutely check out the rest of their catalogue and Shiina's solo albums (which are superior, in my opinion).

If it's your first time listening I'd avoid the Tokyo Jihen album 'Variety'. It divided fans and it isn't something I'd recommend to a first time listener as an accurate representation of what people love about them. KSK (Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana) is my favourite solo Shiina album (and ultimately my favourite thing she's ever been involved in), but again not something I'd recommend to a first time listener. Very different sound to anything else, needs time to simmer and settle.

Starting with her solo records from the beginning (Muzai Moratorium) is a pretty decent way to get started. Follow that with Shouso Strip and then KSK and it nicely shows her growth as a musician before she formed the band. Then do the same for Tokyo Jihen.

It is good to see an instance in which Asian Females are not treated as sex objects and yet still appreciated on GAF.

True that. Variety was like a big blank of nothingness. I mean, it wasn't offensive or anything, but was still a whole lot of bland and forgettable.

Oh, when I try to recommend friends her/TJ's stuff, it can be really difficult because I feel that there isn't any one song that defines her 'sound', especially up till now.

So if you don't want to go through her whole catalogue, I'd recommend the Watashi no Houden B-Side collection which has music from most angles of her career. Then depending on what sound you like, branch out from there.

Also, Tokyo Jihen's magnum opus IMHO is the Dynamite Out concert. The album it derived from is shittily recorded (She said that she wanted a garagey, 'unfinished song' feel to it) and while the songs are good, they sound like rubbish. Dynamite Out unleashes the full potential of most of the Kyouiku tracks.

She also released a solo album this year, which isn't as ambitious and is more 'pop' than her previous solo efforts (It even has rap), but it's still a solid album. My favourite track is this:

It reminds me of psychotic, aggressive, evil J-Pop cheerleaders for some reason.

Very pleasantly surprised.

EDIT:
: O. I thought her voice was familiar. I had no idea of Tokyo Jihen before, but I had heard some of her music before in some tricking samplers. Now I have a name to the voice. Awesome.

PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
Not bad but the same fucking issue I have with probably every Japanese band I've listened too. They've got the dial on 10 but they're afraid to go to 11. It's just too soft for me. I don't want the really hard shit, but just a bit fucking harder on the rock, please? Shit. It's either too soft or too hard. Can't find the right balance.

I don't know much about Japanese music, but I think you just need to listen to more JP bands if you're willing to make a gross generalisation like that.

'Harder' Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen stuff:

Random non SR/TJ recommendations:

Ging Nang Boyz: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaNU9bskp3I

Or maybe go to this site, plenty of reviews for Japanese rock: http://www.keikaku.net

And this song is not trying to be a hard rock song. RnB/Dance/Funk influenced.
