Good for VC2 probably. Those guys need to be a team that sticks together and works regularly. None of this "vanishing for 5-8 years" bullshit.

I'm sure SE's relatively pleased it got somewhat close to 2m. They probably would be pissed it didn't do 400k-500k more if it was 4-5 years ago, but given the circumstances, the sales are pretty good.

Shame Monster Hunter Tri has completely disappeared from charts while Freedom Unite keeps going (even at budget price). Don't they at least have a limited DLC structure like Freedom Unite does, to pump out a couple of sweet missions that magazines post videos/stuff about and get a few more people to buy it? Have they said anything about a G version? I guess, eventually, it will appear in that new Nintendo player's choice budget range also as I imagine users have rated it highly. Hmm.

God Eater for PSP is going to do very well for a new IP is Comgnet is anywhere close to an indication. I wonder what SE can do to slow down used game sales for FF titles, perhaps something like online co-op? Would not be shocked at all if Versus had such a feature.

Go Valkyria!.

I believe the first game sold 234.000 or something between the regular game and the budget version. Is a good start for VC2.

Honestly, the fundamental gameplay structure of FF games encourages people to marathon the damn things and never touch them again. It's been like that for a long time. They're narrative driven, exceedingly linear (even non-linear portions of the games a-la World of Ruin are basically just checklists that you can bounce around on as opposed to truly optional or divergent content), a good chunk of their length is padded in cutscenes and lengthy exposition that are committed to memory and ignored in subsequent playthroughs if there are any. Gameplay-wise there are only two systems: everyone is a master of everything by the end of the game (FF5, FF6, FF7, FF8, FFX, FFXII) or everyone is a master of exactly one thing by the end of the game (FF4, FF9)--and either way there's no real gameplay incentive for anyone but hardcore single-character playthrough speedrun types to play any differently... there's no post-release content, there's no multiplayer of any kind...

Of course, another tactic to try would be to lower the release price. It's no surprise that with $90-100 release prices, someone might either a) want to go for a used copy to avoid that pricetag, or b) not want to deal with that price tag and recoup their losses by trading in. Asking a company to charge less in order to make more is a pretty losing proposition, though :p

I don't remember reading a quote Iwata mentioning 3 million, weird...Their shipment certainly doesn't suggest it. If the top 50 leak is true of last week, they prety much sold through all their shipment. Are they planning on sending more? It wont sell 2 million copies if they didn't even ship as much.

But he also said DQIX would sell 5 million...Weird fella of a CEO :P

Feels like the decision to move the Valkyria franchise to a portable did not really pay off or at least did not do anything to make the series grow. Of course we have see what happens in the coming weeks, but assuming that VC2 will have shorter legs with the franchise being established by now it'll probably end up with a LTD 'only' similar to the PS3 game. Which is not a bad thing of course, but with the omission of western sales it could turn out to be a less fruitful product than the first game (or what a VC2 on PS3 could have been).

I would say so. Same/slightly higher sales, much lower costs for asset creation, and frankly more room for growth if the franchise is going to expand upwards (although this might not be as much an issue with the PS3 since the Slim)

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Despite having garnered positive press, sales of the game have been mixed. While it sold 77,000 copies in its first week of release in Japan, it only sold 33,000 copies in the United States during November 2008.[32] It was the 93rd best-selling game in Japan in 2008, selling 141,589 copies.[33] Despite weak initial North American sales, Valkyria Chronicles recovered somewhat with sales sharply increasing in April 2009 following a price cut[34][35] and the simultaneous release of an anime based on the game. Approximately a year after the game's initial release, both producer Ryutaro Nonaka[36][37] and gamers surveyed by Famitsu[38] stated interest in a sequel to the game. In its 56th week of sale, approximately one year from its initial release in the United States, it sold over 30,000 copies in the United States, more than its initial release week[39][verification needed], showing strong long term interest in the game.
Now, the last paragraph (30k one year after release) is from a banned source, where the other ones are from somewhat reliable sources.

The point that I wanted to bring up though is the following: How much did the western release of Valkyrie Chronicles for PS3 really account for? I'm not going to pull numbers out of my ass, but I hardly think it could have been anymore than 150k, right? Probably a lot less than that.

Maybe with the strong yen and the weak dollar, Sega's decision kind of makes sense, in wanting to strengthen the sales of a japanese game in japanese territory rather than expanding it to the western audience. Like I said, I don't want to pull numbers out of my ass, but maybe due to the strong yen, the revenue that the sales of western VC2 would have brought to the company just wouldn't be worth it, so they tried to at least boost the franchise to higher sales in Japan.

I wonder how low the PS3 hardware will be this week, and what kind of boost it will get from the titles that released today/yesterday.

my guess for this week is 30k and next week 40-45k

The real problem is that VC2 will be further widening the gap between Japan and NA/EU sales-wise, since it's releasing on a dead platform in those regions. The risk to never see VC3 released here grows, basically.

Well Sega has shown from Yakuza that whatever their internal budgets and development strategies are, they're comfortable having franchises that sell only in Japan. The question is whether that comfort suggests that the projects are profitable as is, or whether it suggests that Sega is happy to lose money because they're raving lunatics.

That "much" is arguable. VC is a nice looking game, because the art direction is great and the Canvas engine gives the whole thing a unique look. But it's also a technically unimpressive game with very straightforward and functional geometry, low-res textures to accomplish the anime look and just not much going on. It does not look like a very costly game.
The PSP game also retails for a lower price, so that could very well compensate the financial benefits of PSP development.

Assuming Anihawk is correct, it did about 150K in the US alone. I'd have to guess many of those were heavily discounted though.

You should start reading the interviews with the producer of the series.
VC2 started its full scale development phase in spring '09, after the team was done with the western launch/promotion and the DLC missions for Valkyria Chronicles.

VC1 was in development for 3 years.

That is really not enough information to judge the development of VC 1. I don't know what mismanagement, table-turning, personal shortages or other disturbances led to such an excessive development time, but with the engine standing and the general game design being in place it should not have taken them another 3 years to make a sequel on PS3.
