Will my WWDC topic be moved to the gaming side if the OT is closed during E3?

Yes.

What's the point of this thread? You should've let the other one balloon to gigaton size and become the pre-game thread, then posted yours the day before or day of the event, as the de facto OT. Now we have two threads about the same event a week before the event even begins, creating nothing but splintered discussion, mass confusion, riots in the streets, and world hunger. Good job OP.

I'll just re-post this from the other thread so people can laugh at me when iCloud turns out to be nothing but a boring music storage locker :p

" the potential benefit of iCloud (if it's actually a real meaty service that developers can tap into) is that it could allow for background syncing of data that does not freak Apple out with battery life worries.

so, instead of having to first load the app to initiate the syncing with dropbox as we do now, the syncing could happen in the background and, since Apple would likely control the iCloud sync across all apps, they would still have that control they want over power usage.

Obviously hardcore Android users look at the above and scoff since they can sync all the shit they want in the background across multiple apps and services right now. but knowing Apple won't go that route, this unified service that they could control makes a lot of sense for them to implement and provide about the same benefit to users."

-------

and I don't mind talking in here till the keynote instead of the other thread. /shrug

My main concern will this be open when OT shuts down for E3? Seems like it should. Mod?

Hopfully GAF makes it through alive. Seriously can not wait. Very excited. Will be dissapointed if Final Cut isnt even mentioned since it is supposed to launch in June.

Stump said in the other thread that the WWDC discussion will get moved to gaming side should the OT go down. so we're good.

I kind of want to see Apple TV stuff, but don't know if there's time. It is their most cloud-geared device currently, with over the air firmware updates and streaming directly from Apple's servers.
I'd assume that Apple TV would also get the new iCloud features. An AppStore for App TV would be huge news, and this would be the best time to announce it, but that requires new hardware imo.

there are many people who could argue convincingly that apps on iOS don't need to catch up to anyone.

background services and integration of apps into the UI (badges, notifications, etc) is another matter, of course.

On a broader scale, the potential benefit of iCloud (if it's actually a real meaty service that developers can tap into) is that it could allow for background syncing of data that does not freak Apple out with battery life worries.

Sure. And there are people who can argue 'convincingly' that the notification systems on other platforms aren't that great, that the problem with notifications system on iOS is that it's getting notifications in the first place (people shouldn't be getting numerous notifications, duh) and that notifications on iOS don't need to catch up to anyone. I personally don't find those arguments at all convincing.

To be honest I expect the notifications system to similar disappointing in the way the multitasking was disappointing last year (then I was soo hyped :/ ). For one thing, a good notifications system depends partly on hardware support and the iPhone4 et al don't have that/

iCloud has the potential to be mind-blowing amazing etc but, given Apple's track record with relinquishing control to developers, the odds are it will be severely limited. Anyway, i trust Apple even less that I trust dropbox.

'Needs to catch up' and 'needs to improve their notification system' are two different things. I think iOS's notifications are a few years behind, but I think the Android/webOS manner of handling them is far from ideal. I want to see notifications revamped, but if they're just slapping Android's notification drawer onto iOS, I'll be deeply disappointed. The notification drawer is better than what Apple's currently got, but it's far from a truly good solution.

As Gary said in the other thread, I want to hear more about Apple TV. I am wanting to pick one up, but am curious if there will be a new model, preferably with a USB port to actually play off a connected drive.

What's wrong with multitasking in its current implementation from the consumer perspective?

Agreed (though I quite like WebOS's approach). I still prefer the less imperfect method in the interim though.

Boo.
There'll almost certainly be some sort of boot disk solution (USB drive or DVD) as well. We'll see.

More interested in seeing the device upgraded with more memory so that it can run a new breed of iOS applications that can be sync'd from the phone to the device so that you get more of a smart home approach.

You walk into a room and your phone sync's such that your TV starts showing the application you were using with a quick gesture and I can guarantee you that people will start shitting bricks. Especially if the device 'introduces' itself after the sync. "Welcome home Mr. Pierce" I have taken the liberty of moving your copy of Star Trek over to the device and set the playhead where you left off."

I hope a date is announced for lion. I haven't used it but it looks like a really good update with a lot of interesting tweaks.

Also, I really hope iOS 5 will have a better notification system, preferably one that utilizes the lockscreen better.

We briefly talked about it in the other thread and I think we should continue the discussion. What would be a good implementation for widgets in iOS 5? Just placing them on the homescreen, Honeycomb style (which is an ugly mess, in my opinion) or maybe something like OS X, where the widgets have their own space? Or something completely different?

I love the mutlitasking gestures on my iPad. It's so much faster.

I don't think pressing the home button twice is very intuitive.

I don't have that much (650GB on my G5DP and 320GB on my MBP) and I still don't look forward to moving everything over. Though I'll bite once I see/hear more features...

There's no hardware being announced at this event. Like I said before, the most we'll probably hear about Apple TV is how it will tie into iCloud.

Integrated into the screen left of home, where the spotlight search is.

I've described this iOS widget concept elsewhere and people generally seem to like it; I'll use the Weather app and SBSettings as examples of simple functions that could use this easily.

1) animated/dynamic icons - Weather icon could display the current freakin' conditions and temperature

2) treat widgets as mini-apps that pop open using the exact animation used for opening folders in iOS, with the app display and/or controls visible within. The Weather app could easily be turned into this; it'd also be super easy to have a little SBSettings widget that pops open to reveal a set of buttons/sliders that let you manage anything that has an effect on battery life without having to dive into multiple sets of control panels within Settings.

It'd be relatively elegant and usable while also (crucially) being consistent with the internal logic of the iOS GUI.

I hate widgets so much and I'm looking forward to seeing how iOS 5 tries to change my opinion of them.

Same here. Every time I pick up a Android tablet at Best Buy it just looks like a clunky mess with crap all over the screen. I have a feeling Apple will be able to introduce widgets in a way that doesn't look like garbage.

Keep the feel of iOS but make it more up-to-date, elegant, and user friendly.

Has it been officially announced that there won't be a live stream? I thought once they got their shit together last year they'd be going back to doing it all the time again. If there isn't then I don't care if im working that day. I'll just check threads later.

And yeah, will this thread be accessible during E3? It's rare that both events take enlace at the same time. I'd hate to miss out on some Apple discussion because of gaming stuff. Maybe put this thread in Gaming temporarily while the forum is locked down?

Edit: All I want is better iOS notifications even if they rip off Android.

I would rather have awesome battery life than widgets.

The only thing I really want to see from iOS is a real notification system. The current system is so bad.

Stumpokapow clarified in the other thread that this discussion will be moved to the Gaming side once the OT is locked down for E3.

It will still be accessible during E3. Mods have confirmed it. The thread will probably be moved to Gaming, though.

Awesome. Can't wait for this event. And E3, but mostly this. And now we wait a week.....

I know no hardware will be announced, it was just wishful thinking. Or if they could just do a software update to the current AppleTV and let that lil USB port on the back accept external drives.

I haven't turned my ipad 2 to devmode but i would like quick app switching gesture to be standard. Notifcations needs to be changed i hate the fucking red badges and how shitty some apps are with the notifcations like google voice what a piece of shit app on the iphone. They need to add more background services and allow third party to use the full safari implentation pulse's web browser sucks for reading code heavy webpages.

Fix safari privacy options, add a porno mode or a sandbox mode so when i check my banks website all the stuff is wiped off the ipad when my session is done.

Also fix the autocorrect or tell me the option to turn off autocorrect but leave spell checker on or a way to add to the internal dictionary.

Eye tracking withe front facing camera scroll the txt based on where my attention is please i am lazy apple.

Same here, would like an update on this as I plan on building an HTPC around one but waiting on a new revision. Probably something that will just get stealth-rolled out rather than being mentioned at an event though.

I wasn't talking about notifications. I was talking about the quality of 3rd party apps. (and Apple apps) Do you really think that iOS apps are way behind WP7 and Web OS in quality?

we all know notifications on iOS are garbage. they don't scale and don't provide a way to review once dismissed. there is no convincing argument that they're better than the competition. the best one can say about them is that, if you only have one or two a day, you don't want to throw your iPhone on the ground.
