Capcom sued for workplace bullying.

Searched around and didn't see a thread, so lock if old.

A Japanese game developer who worked on Dragon's Dogma at Capcom is claiming that she was bullied by her fellow employees to the point where she considered committing suicide. According to an article on Japanese publication Minpokyo, the unnamed 20+ year old female joined Capcom in 2009 and was assigned to the Dragon's Dogma development team. But the trouble began when a senior female employee was assigned to the team too. According to the report, she decided to make it very unpleasant for the unnamed employee.

The female employee claims that the manager went out of her way to criticize her in meetings and conspired to give her tasks that were impossible and often without any instructions. In one cited example she claims that she worked on a database to improve the efficiency of internal game development only to have her work put on the junk heap and told that "even if the database is a success, [she was] worthless to the team."

The report goes on to say that shortly after that happened two other managers went out of their way to get her fired. They allegedly spread rumors throughout the company that "her ideas stink," that she was a "problematic” employee who would abandon her work and skip meetings. When she attempted to fix the problem with Capcom's HR department, she claims that they did nothing to fix the situation.

Later that year the woman was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and while on sick leave she reportedly attempted to commit suicide using sleeping pills, antidepressants and cold medicine. When she returned to work some of her co-workers said she hadn't fully recovered from her illness. Her boss eventually suspended her and later fired her.

Naturally this whole ordeal has led to a lawsuit against Capcom.

Capcom has not publicly commented on this story and it should be noted that hearing one side of the story puts Capcom in a bad light. No doubt the company will mount a defense against the young woman's claims in court.

Wow Capcom really is a shitty company these days.

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
As Japan is a patriarchal society, I was expecting the initial aggressor to be a male, turns out the senior female was jealous of the rosy-cheeked yougin, and wrapped the other male managers around her finger, inevitably conspiring against the youth.

Capcom Sucks!

This doesn't surprise me, Japanese women are way more aggressive than Japanese men these days. At least from my experiences, anyway.

Why did HR do nothing?

If her side of the story is accurate, it was probably out of a desire to avoid rocking the boat or cause a senior worker to lose face.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are lots of incidents like this all over the place. The only really noteworthy thing about this one is that there was a lawsuit, since the Japanese are typically very reluctant to take problems to litigation.

any examples? (aside from this one of course)

I'm afraid this is one of those impressions that I have no idea really where I sourced it from, aside just generally from Japanese (fictional) media and whatnot. I don't have any news stories for you.

We're only hearing one side of the story...

For example, I had a co-worker who threw everyone under the bus when no one did anything wrong to her. She tried to make it look like she was a victim when she was the one trying to cause trouble in the office. I have another co-worker who blames my supervisor for being too harsh on her when she isn't. She's a shit bag and is trying to bend the system to her favor and get her way for everything. Like I said, it's one side of the story....and it's presumptuous to blame Capcom.

Is it sad to say that I'm not surprised this happens at Capcom? The corporate culture there seems to be in a state where a massive overhaul in management is necessary.

It's one side of the story. Interested to hear Capcom's side. I want her to win if these allegations are true. Take Capcom for all their worth.

^ The only post in the thread that doesn't jump to conclusions or make sweeping generalizations. "all japanese women are aggressive" or "fuck capcom. I believe everything I read."

Jesus. You're all terrible.

Such as saving the Resident Evil franchise.

The fact that it got to the stage of lawsuits shows Capcom wasn't doing enough to support their employees. When something like this happens, there needs to be more constructive communications. Managers need to try to recognize and react to an employee's reservations about one another.

We don't have the info he has, so we just listen to what's in front of us.

If someone told you this story, you'd say "Jesus, that's awful," not "I'll wait till I hear from your bosses." Now it's for the courts to settle.

So, you believe 100% everything you read is true? To the point where it's okay to pass judgment and condemn a company for something that you don't know really happened or not? How can you possibly defend passing judgment with almost no information.

Pretty sad I have to say this, but I have no love for capcom. And I'm not saying I think this event didn't transpire like the story says the woman alleges. I'm saying you can't possibly know, and people in this thread are terrible.
