Calling all armchair generals and futurists. How do you think human military will evolve? A rough guesstimate leads me to believe the 21st century will be the century of drones and energy weapons.

Drones are a huge part of the modern battlefield and they can only become more sophisticated with time and mastery. Ground drones are inevitable, but will they ever replace the infantryman's role? Perhaps maybe used as a secondary or support for an infantry squad? Whether it be pack-mule, med-station, walking terminator death machine with a minigun, or all three, they are inevitable. At first they may be lumbering RPG-magnets, similar to the way we had those 2mph-tanks in WWI, but I'm willing to bet with enough R&D they will become one of the most feared weapon in this century.

Seeing a cold, emotionless face like that would send a shiver down any man's spine. Will they even have faces as an intimidation factor? Or will they be faceless?

Heavy mechanized walkers. Mechs. Will they ever be viable in combat?

Feel free to share your theories or post awesome concept art.

Well mechs aren't really practical and bipedal ones are damn near impossible due to weight distribution issues. That said, they do provide a shock and awe factor.

The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots.

Guerrilla warfare that's something "big" nations do not understand.

All those big nukes is like kill crack a nut with a sledgehammer.

Just play a few rounds of Cards Against Humanity:

"I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with ____."

Ah, I see this thread is under control. My input is not needed.

The year is 2065.

The world's military forces have been transferred to the World Wide War Web in an effort to eliminate the loss of actual human life. Every country, whether they be a superpower or in the Third World, have been represented accordingly. Wars are fought through this system, and the winner of each battle takes the loser's electronic infrastructure. However, the system is flawed, and is prone to hacking. In this state of "wargasm," the world has fallen into a state of corruption. It is the player's duty to bring order back to the world.

It would be nice if in the future, when nations are at loggerheads and tensions are rising between the peoples, if the governments could organise an orgy and fuck each other rotten.

I love you.

Humans will, for a very long time, be putting their lives in danger. Certain parts of war will become more of a remote war, with the advancement of drones and robots, but humans will, for a long time, have to be up in the front lines in one form or another (even if they're in an armored suit)

I'd be pretty happy as a commander if the opposing army used walkers tbh, much easier to hit than a low profile combat vehicle like a tank, easy to destroy their ability to move, incredibly energy inefficient compared to tracks etc.

A robot designed specifically to keep up with humans. Are large armoured vehicles designed to keep up with humans?

still though I could see the benefit of using Big Dog to kill things covertly, probably harder to track than a tank and might be able to carry heavy ordinance eventually
also you'd have to do something about the horrible noise it makes

It will no longer be about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles fought by mercenaries and machines. War - and its consumption of life - has become a well-oiled machine. War has changed. ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear. Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities. Genetic control. Information control. Emotion control. Battlefield control. Everything is monitored and kept under control. War has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control... All in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction. And he who controls the battlefield... controls history. War has changed. When the battlefield is under total control... War becomes routine.

War. War never changes. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything: from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage. In the year 2077, after millennia of armed conflict, the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation. But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of human history. For man had succeeded in destroying the world - but war, war never changes.
