XCOM Enemy Unknown expansion pack

New soldier abilities allow you to research Gene Mods to augment your fighters' physical capabilities, and the Mechanized Exoskeletal Cybersuit. MECs can use flamethrowers or grenade launchers, because it is cool when mechs use those things. New weapons and equipment will also bolster your assets.

New enemies will also rear their ugly heads, with the Mechtoid the first to be unveiled. An alien resource known as MELD, fresh tactical challenges and a whole 47 new maps are also on the cards. You'll also get more multiplayer environments, units, and powers, as well as stuff yet to be announced.

Fans will experience an additional three to four playthroughs on average before encountering all of the new material included in XCOM: Enemy Within, providing nearly limitless replayability.

“The incredible critical and consumer response to XCOM: Enemy Unknown inspired us to offer new content that would deepen the strong bond that has been created for our XCOM brand,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Firaxis Games is renowned for delivering massive, highly immersive PC expansions in the Civilization series, and XCOM: Enemy Within builds on that lineage and expands the experience for console gamers as well.”

“We promised gamers that we would deliver the same Enemy Unknown experience on both PC and console last fall, and we’re doing it again with Enemy Within,” said Ananda Gupta, lead designer at Firaxis Games. “The Commander Edition of XCOM: Enemy Within expands the already amazing XCOM experience for our console fans who are looking forward to even more of the game they love. It’s also a great point of entry for new fans just joining the XCOM fight.”

XCOM: Enemy Within vastly improves upon the experience of XCOM: Enemy Unknown with an incredible amount of new content. On PC** and Mac**, XCOM: Enemy Within features additional content that can be enjoyed with previously purchased copies of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. the PR says "incredible amount of new content" but that list actually doesn't sound all that substantial, 50% more maps? how many is that exactly?

kinda underwhelming.

Incredible stuff. XCOM EU was one of my favorite games in recent years, and this looks to ramp up the amount of awesome going on in a major way. I'm down.

Hopefully it makes it so it's playable on PS3, because the base game barely was with all the slowdown. I'd get this if they fix that.

Sounds great, though I hope there's signficant changes to the strategy bit as that what was needed the most. I also would probably have preferred an alternate campaign that spins the story in another direction, but eh.

Will start another XCOM run in November then... maybe I'll finish it on Classic this time, but I'm still not sure I want to commit to Ironman due to inevitable glitches (and me misclicking). :p

No new story is disappointing if true, but where are you guys reading that?

There is no mention of new story mode in the feature list. Safe to assume there is none. It's only new features for the regular game, sounds like they will release it as DLC too as well as standalone game.

Sounds fantastic. More content for the orginal campaign is exactly what I wanted.

I just hope that there is enough changes for the strategy part. I hope the new projects make it challenging to research/build everything.

sounds good but it would've been nice to have more story and to be able to use my old team

oh well

at 30 bucks I'm not getting it on release anyways

I hope by 47 new maps they don't mean 10-something new maps and lots of minor variations.

But other than that, I'm so going to but this expansion as soon as it's released. I'm thrilled to see 2K is continuing to develop and expand their reboot of X-com !

Did someone really care for the story here? Anyway going to play the shit out of this.

It's not really about the story, but rather having a new campaign. The campaign in XCOM Enemy Unknown is very much scripted to lead the player through the various major research milestones, and escalation of the conflict, leading to the finale. If they're putting effort into making 47 new maps, a bunch of new weapons and equipment, brand new upgrade types, alien types, etc, it makes very little sense why there isn't a new campaign to showcase all this properly.

Wait, there's really no new campaign? It's just a bunch of stuff being added into the original campaign? Whaaaaaaaaat?

it's weird how they're phrasing it, in the rev4 interview it certainly made it sound like you had to start over so I figured there'd be a new campaign but now I'm not so sure...

it'd be pretty underwhelming if you have to start from scratch and do the same stuff but with biomechs

Not good if true. Price is way too high for what amounts to DLC then.

Then again, I still haven't beaten the first one(had unlocked the last mission on Normal, but instead of trying it bumped up a difficulty and never have gotten to the same point again), so maybe I'm best holding out until this comes out if it can be just a DLC for those of us that already bought it.

.

it is DLC actually for PC. It just won't be released as DLC for consoles.
On PC** and Mac**, XCOM: Enemy Within features additional content that can be enjoyed with previously purchased copies of XCOM: Enemy Unknown

**XCOM: Enemy Within for PC and Mac requires XCOM: Enemy Unknown to play. XCOM: Enemy Within – Commander Edition is a standalone expanded experience that includes all XCOM: Enemy Unknown content and two add-on content packs: the Elite Soldier Pack the Slingshot Content Pack. XCOM: Enemy Within – Commander Edition does not require XCOM: Enemy Unknown to play.

so I take it 30 bucks is for the standalone version and addon version cost less?

Huh. Pretty disappointing that there's no new campaign.

That brought the expansion from "Day One" to "wait for steam sale" for me. The additions look pretty cool but I'm not sure they're $30-$40 cool.

I do hope that this content can be bought digitally and aded to the base game... but that press release bears no pricepoint, other than the separate full-game release, which does not bode well.

I enjoyed X-Com very much, but not so much I'll buy it again at that price.
