XCOM: Enemy Within announced, coming November 12th

Listened to Giant Bomb's interview dumptruck podcast with Anand, and it was kind of a boilerplate interview but he did indicate that there are significant additional portions of Enemy Within that they haven't revealed yet.

Well, makes sense. It's a Firaxis expansion. Those have always been pretty meaty.

If this is true - and I hope it is - it makes this reveal all the more bizarre. They were aware even before release that lots of XCom fans were generally unhappy with the way the campaign was designed, so why lead by trumpeting changes that no one was asking for?

Based upon what they've announced thus far, $10-15 would have been a reasonable price point. $30 is insane.

XCOM has been a game I've heard nothing but praise for, but I've always kind of kept away from it after trying it a few times on PSN (still making my way through the main campaign). Maybe these tweaks will pull me in?

I'm not seeing much talk about improving the simulation side of the game, and nothing about random map generation. Disappointing total.

It's strange to see how much stuff is hard coded into a game that should be all about randomization and replayability. Especially from a company like Firaxis.

Still, Firaxis does good work so I'll probably buy it but I'm really hoping for significant improvements in a sequel.

More news from PC gamer via /r/xcom:

New features:
Troopers can have genetic modification and psychic abilities. No word on MECs, but they seem pretty powerful enough as it is.

Genetic mods will change the look of troops armour to make them more distinctive.
One genetic mod mentioned was active cammoflage.

MECs won't use the equipment other troops do, instead they'll have specialist abilities like a healing mist, EMP blasts, jet boots and proximity mines *MECs do get unplugged from their combat suits in the base, but will visibly show signs of their augmentation.

MECs will be very expensive. All of the demos for the press have handed them a "dream team", more powerful than you're likely to see before the very end of the game. A very good player probably won't field more than three MECs over a campaign

There are "pretty big" additions to the strategic layer and situation room, and "a few new story elements", but they can't talk about them yet.

Medals can be awarded to soldiers giving as-yet-unknown benefits

The memorial board will now record the date and cause of each soldiers demise. (I do hope it specifies exactly which squadmate panicked and shot them).

Many more and varied maps. One mentioned involved fighting across the top of a dam.

Explosive weapons can target cover

Blast radius weapons will now clearly highlight anyone within the blast radius.

No more teleporting enemies!

Bugs fixed with flanking bonuses

Squaddies not on-mission will automatically have their gear dumped in an easily accessible locker.

So there, more story/remixed for you people hung up on it.

No mention re: the long overdue mod support for PC?

Some things externalized into ini files w/ EW, but honestly the mod scene for this game is not all that bad. No idea if there is going to be workshop support but I really doubt it.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
That's true, the random elements they are adding to existing mechanics is nice - I should have specified that the one random element I wanted was stages. It would really give some life to the game. That and, as others have stated, a more freeform campaign.

However the option to change flanking is pretty sweet. I'm not so big on how Meld is implemented (for now) as I never liked the push and pull of wanting to play defensively but always being penalized. Terror missions are a prime example - I never liked always rushing forward to save civillians only to be met by a squad of baddies who get to move upon discovery. EU always seemed to push me back to playing defensively and adding a timed resource to the map just seems like a stretch. I'll wait for more experienced players to test it out though because I certainly am no expert.

Thats the enitre point of a terror mission...

!

I've grabbed the OT for this, btw. I liked doing the XCOM one and want to do something similar again.

I'll leave the next LP until the BNW-tier expansion, though, lol. Unless of course THIS is the BNW tier expansion...

You have the title right there

XCOM:EW |OT| No more teleporting enemies!

I can't believe I survived as long as I did in your last one

I'm really pissed I fell off updating that, tbh, but real life got ahead of me and squad sizes are annoyingly small so it wasn't really attracting a consistently posting crowd :(

So if I get this for PC, will it supplement the original game or is it totally separate? I have the original but haven't played it yet, was thinking of waiting until the expansion came out and just playing the whole lot, does that make sense?

It's the same game, just with a whole bunch of new stuff. Have you ever played Civilization? It's sort of the same way that they handle those expansion packs.

If you have the time, you might as well give the original game a playthrough, so you can feel what it's like. Playing the game again with the upcoming expansion will be like an all new, but still familiar, experience.

As far as I understand it treat it like a Civ expansion pack; it'll bolt 'around' existing systems. You're probably well off waiting.

Thanks guys. If I've time I might try to play through it once beforehand.

This is encouraging but also pretty damn vague.
When are they planning to release this, once again?

You know, thinking about the title, it seems like they're going to take the expansion into the realm of "Protecting the world from all enemies. Foreign, sir, and domestic."

Anyone else think that they're adding a mechanic where any nations lost not only revoke their funding, but also become agents of the aliens, at which point they launch their own domestic invasions and then you'll have to beat them back and eventually liberate their nation from alien control?

That would be fucking badass. Better build up dem satellites!

I think I'm going on a media blackout for now. I want to be surprised at any remaining features they have left in store.

I do agree plenty of the stuff seems like it should have just come in patches, especially no more teleporting enemies. That said I'll be grabbing this on day 1. XCOM EU is one of the best console gaming experiences I've had in quite some time and I'd be purchasing this even if it just included some new outfit variations a-la-'free'-to-play since I want to support the further development of games like this in any way that I can.
