The shorts were brutal. I have no f'ing clue what to pick. I feel confident about some of my picks however.

I think Hollywood will fall over themselves to give 12 Years a Slave everything they can, but at the same time you can't stop the Mcconaissance. Gravity the leftovers.

I just voted despite not having a clue about anything. The only movie I've seen on that list is Gravity. This feels like March Madness.

Having not seen any of the foreign films or documentaries, I couldn't vote for those. I also have virtually no knowledge of proper sound editing etc. The only categories I feeel relatively strongly about are picture, director, actors / actresses and animated feature.

As an aside, anyone got a decent stream for a poor student in the UK without TV access?

My picks are

Picture: 12 Years a Slave
Director: Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity
Actor: Chiwetel Ejofor in 12 Years a Slave
Actress: Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine
Supporting Actor: Michael Fassbender in 12 Years a Slave
Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle
Original Screenplay: Spike Jonze for Her
Adapted Screenplay: John Ridley for 12 Years a Slave
Animated Feature Film: Frozen
Original Score: William Butler and Andy Koyama for Her
Original Song: Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for "Let It Go"

All the technical and production awards go to Gravity, with the exception of Costume Design (American Hustle), Production Design (12 Years a Slave) and Hair & Makeup (Dallas Buyers Club).

Edit: Cleanup

This would be ideal, I just see American Hustle as far more Academy-friendly.

Yeah, but on that count - the Academy isn't all that friendly to comedies, which is what Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle are. Big, loud comedies. When given the choice, the Academy will almost NEVER pick a comedy over a meaningful drama (like 12 Years, or Gravity) unless it's in a category like Best Supporting Actor/Actress or Best Screenplay.

Which is why I'm picking Jennifer Lawrence for Best Supporting Actress and Her for Best Original Screenplay.

edit: Looking at your ballot, we're simpatico on our picks EXCEPT for the major ones: I gave McQueen best Director, McConaughey Best Actor ("He's Due" will be the thinking there) Bullock Best Actress (Prom Queens, remember) JLaw for Supporting Actress, and Her for Original Screenplay.

Agree that it's a toss-up between McQueen and Cuaron, but I see an Argo/Ang Lee scenario playing out between the two in terms of the director/picture split.

Disagree on McConaughey though (as much as I loved him in DBC) and just can't see past Chiwetel.

Not sure on Bullock to be honest and I still feel fairly confident about Blanchett.

Jennifer Lawrence wouldn't surprise me but really, I thought her Silver Lining's Playbook performance was miles ahead of American Hustle.

Would absolutely love Her to win Original Screenplay and for that reason alone would be surprised if it happened.

Here are my picks. I don't necessarily agree with them, but they are what I expect to win; submitted these picks using the OP's form:

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave
Best Director: Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity
Best Actor: Christian Bale for American Hustle
Best Actress: Meryl Streep for August: Osage County
Best Supporting Actor: Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle
Best Original Screenplay: Her: Spike Jonze
Best Adapted Screenplay: 12 Years a Slave: John Ridley
Best Animated Feature Film: Frozen
Best Foreign Language Film: The Hunt: Thomas Vinterberg(Denmark)
Cinematography: Gravity: Emmanuel Lubezki
Editing: Gravity: Alfonso Cuarón, Mark Sanger
Production Design: The Great Gatsby: Catherine Martin, Beverley Dunn
Costume Design: 12 Years a Slave: Patricia Norris
Best Makeup and Hairstyling: The Lone Ranger: Joel Harlow, Gloria Pasqua Casny
Original Score: Saving Mr. Banks: Thomas Newman
Original Song: Frozen: Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez("Let It Go")
Best Sound Mixing: Gravity: Skip Lievsay, Niv Adiri, Christopher Benstead, Chris Munro

I wonder how overwhelmed by lurker entries you'll be, CFK.

I'm constantly lurking, and I entered.
Gravity is a lock for best visual effects.
Frozen will probably win best animated feature, but I'm glad Ernest and Celestine got some recognition there.

I voted for Gravity in everything except best actress. That's a tough one. It deserves Best Director, but it may lose out. And it may lose Best Picture, but it deserves it because the film as a whole was a transcendental experience. The journey was real man...

12 Years a Slave was a solid piece of work, but the film plods in the second act.

Best Supporting Actor for Captain Phillips, because I thought they pulled a legitimate Somali terrorist into the movie. He was fantastic; realistic and above all frightening.

Put in my vote. Should be an interesting evening. My money's on '12 Years', Leo for Best Actor and Blanchett for Best Actress.

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.
Voted, I was wavering between 12 Years and Dallas Buyers Club for several of the major categories and went with what I know (12 Years a Slave), rather than my hunch for what might win (McConaughey).

I voted. Gravity is going to win best picture. McQueen will win best director. Also, I hate JLaw and think she sucked AH but she is going to win. She shouldn't but she is the "it" girl.

Make-up category is the best this year, as usual.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
Dallas Buyers Club
The Lone Ranger

I only watched DBC very recently, and despite knowing Leto was in it and having met him in person, I didn't recognise him until the movie was over.

Done. I don't know about some so I just picked the first answer.

I think Gravity will win big. Best picture and director + all the technical stuff

Awww yess. Some meaty categories this year. Much potential for wrong picks. Some locks have become more uncertain in the final weeks.

I see a lot of people picking JLaw for supporting actress, but aren't we forgetting an important detail here? She won last year, and the Academy isn't fond of back-to-back wins, even in different categories. I think that Hanks is still paying undue penance because of that.

I hope I am wrong. In fact I voted for who is more likely going to win. I hope I am wrong about a lot of things. I need 12 Years a Slave to sweep just to see twitter-racist cry.

EDIT: and Bruce Dren is getting his.
