[Reuters] More than a billion people worldwide are obese, WHO study finds

The findings, considered among the most authoritative of independent estimates, are based on data from more than 220 million people in more than 190 countries.

Obesity rates for adults more than doubled between 1990 and 2022, and more than quadrupled among children and adolescents aged 5-19, the paper said.

Summary here:

Background

Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories.

Methods

We used data from 3663 population-based studies with 222 million participants that measured height and weight in representative samples of the general population. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends in the prevalence of different BMI categories, separately for adults (age ≥20 years) and school-aged children and adolescents (age 5–19 years), from 1990 to 2022 for 200 countries and territories. For adults, we report the individual and combined prevalence of underweight (BMI <18·5 kg/m2) and obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2). For school-aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI <2 SD below the median of the WHO growth reference) and obesity (BMI >2 SD above the median).

Findings

From 1990 to 2022, the combined prevalence of underweight and obesity in adults decreased in 11 countries (6%) for women and 17 (9%) for men with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 that the observed changes were true decreases. The combined prevalence increased in 162 countries (81%) for women and 140 countries (70%) for men with a posterior probability of at least 0·80. In 2022, the combined prevalence of underweight and obesity was highest in island nations in the Caribbean and Polynesia and Micronesia, and countries in the Middle East and north Africa. Obesity prevalence was higher than underweight with posterior probability of at least 0·80 in 177 countries (89%) for women and 145 (73%) for men in 2022, whereas the converse was true in 16 countries (8%) for women, and 39 (20%) for men. From 1990 to 2022, the combined prevalence of thinness and obesity decreased among girls in five countries (3%) and among boys in 15 countries (8%) with a posterior probability of at least 0·80, and increased among girls in 140 countries (70%) and boys in 137 countries (69%) with a posterior probability of at least 0·80. The countries with highest combined prevalence of thinness and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents in 2022 were in Polynesia and Micronesia and the Caribbean for both sexes, and Chile and Qatar for boys. Combined prevalence was also high in some countries in south Asia, such as India and Pakistan, where thinness remained prevalent despite having declined. In 2022, obesity in school-aged children and adolescents was more prevalent than thinness with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 among girls in 133 countries (67%) and boys in 125 countries (63%), whereas the converse was true in 35 countries (18%) and 42 countries (21%), respectively. In almost all countries for both adults and school-aged children and adolescents, the increases in double burden were driven by increases in obesity, and decreases in double burden by declining underweight or thinness.

Interpretation

The combined burden of underweight and obesity has increased in most countries, driven by an increase in obesity, while underweight and thinness remain prevalent in south Asia and parts of Africa. A healthy nutrition transition that enhances access to nutritious foods is needed to address the remaining burden of underweight while curbing and reversing the increase in obesity.

This is what happens when you call Fat, Overweight and Obese people "Plus-size" and congratulate them on spreading body positivity images.

Saw a video where a mother was feeding her kid donuts for breakfast and then you wonder where all the sugar addicts are coming from.

The need for body positivity came from bullying and abuse. We cannot balance between being complete idiots with others around us and normalizing/celebrating health issues, physical or mental.

All this happened because obese people were called fat and laughed on daily by people who couldn't fix their own pathetic lives and meddled with others.

We need to take action, ban sodas and excessive sugar and fat consumption. We need classes in elementary school and we need to make healthy food more accessible. A fucking salad costs more than a sandwich were i am from.

Covid showed up and got a lot of people bigger. I go into the office 2-3x a week now just to get out of the house and move around. Its so easy to stuff your face all day from home.

You dont realize just how much you eat at home until you get out in the world again.

Lotta fat people do try and make others around them fatter as a big coping mechanism to not be the only one fat person in their life.
Only a matter of time before you can be arrested or at least be held accountable for any damage done to children from being fat especially at a young age.

Lol they arent trying to make them fatter, its just doing the same things which made them fat in the first place.

People around you live the same way you do because its how you live.

You can eat any food and have it fit your macro's.

I think the real issue is over-indulgence and a lack of physical activity for most folks.

If I over eat, I know at some point in the week, I'll have to run a couple of miles.

I clean eat with a cheat meal once a week. I do CrossFit weekdays and and hour an a half of ultimate frisbee on the weekends. Also training for a marathon in April. Just got back from my PCP visit. Bloodwork is prefect. BMI lists me as obese.

Not saying that people are not getting fatter, just saying that the BMI metrics they are using are off. Percentage of bodyfat is a better metric.

Sodium is a nasty thing too, which is in a lot of fast food and frozen foods.
I had someone give me a LMNT packet to try. I didn't find out until the next day that it's like 50% of your daily recommended amount for sodium. Not good for people with high blood pressure :messenger_grimmacing_

Sad to see the impact on children. The already skyrocketing medical costs are only going to continue to get worse, unfortunately.
They should really start linking lifestyle choices with how much money you need to pay for social security in countries with socialised medicine e.g. Europe. It’s way easier to be healthy here than in the US, you have barely any excuse except laziness.

I mean - are you obese or not? Because CrossFit is not exactly the recommended cross-training together with endurance running.

Hmmmm.

While this post raises a lot of questions on my mind, I’ll just say that somehow blaming “meddling?” People smacks of bullshit. This didn’t “all start there.”

It started for what reason, trama, health, caused a person to gain too much weight.

Talk with your doc about hypertension medication. It was a game changer. Some of them have off-book side effects like what beta blockers would do. Amazing stuff.

I just meant in general. My BP is slightly high but seems normal with my age range. I was just blown away to see something at 50% for sodium intake.

Keep gaslighting yourselves into thinking that being disgustingly obese is a good thing, you morons.

These problems solve themselves, usually sooner rather than later.

BMI is horrible when it comes to people who have built a solid amount of muscle.

Have you done that?

I think we really need to rethink about how food is regulated, since it seems people aren't able to make healthy choices using their own free will. Maybe higher taxes on unhealthy foods, or subsidies for healthier foods or maybe both?

In the mean time, hopefully more stuff like Ozempic (which I know has its on set of problems) could help relieve future heath complications from being overweight by helping people lose lots of weight.

The blame is also on the media for telling this is ok.
Nah, i don't buy this, people are intelligent enough to know that being obese is bad for your health and even in this fucked up bizzarro world i bet there is no important channel on tv straight up saying that being obese is better than being in shape, it would be a lie as big as smoke and alcohol are good for you.

But even if there is someone saying that without repercussion on national tv, my first point still stands, you have to be straight up retarded to think that being obese is not gonna kill you sooner or later.

I keep saying it but America wants people fat.

good for the medical industry. And pharmaceutical companies.

Also the whole cheap shit being less expensive than the fruit and veg is mental. I went to American supermarkets like five dollars for some grapes but chips and chocolate you can buy it cheaper.

Countries where there is preventative medicine they want people thinner.

But crap food ingredients are everywhere now.

This whole body positivity and anti science thing is mental.

I’m overweight I know this. But I don’t want to be. So I’m exercising.

I am obese and have been for a while…..I’m workin on it though. I want to be healthy and have energy and be able to do things. Just wish I could convince my dad to join me in working on it….i worry about him.
Take it one step at a time. also Wait till he sees changes in you he should feel motivated. Also trick him into walking more or get him to eat less.

He may just be getting defensive but deep down he knows you are right.

Take it from me I was really fat at one stage I lost a lot of weight.
I’m not sure of the value in pounds but it was about three stone I think.
It all helped to lower my blood pressure and help my mental health out.

I don't believe people are inteligent at all. Most of them either are easly manipulated, are naive to trust whatever journalists writes or are scared/have disorders. It's one of reasons I'm so critical of journalism here, they usually take advantage of information against people.

They don't put in jail people who incourage their children to change sex at young age and you think they are gonna arrest the morbidly obese shitty parents?

Yeah maybe when the world is gonna start healing from the mind virus, until the things are gonna go even worse.

There are a lot of things that we should do, I agree. When it comes to food, you can make a lot of healthy and tasty dishes that go with rice, and it's cheap. People these days are just lazy and want something straight away rather than spending some time in the kitchen. You don't need to be rich to make some meal preps at home at an affordable budget.

The other issue is, we are now plastering fat/overweight and obese women in marketing, showing them that it's normal and you should love yourself. We should be showing them how unhealthy it is like we do with those nasty pictures on cigarette packs or those alcohol ads. Since 2014, obesity has killed more people than cigarettes in the UK alone.

If we are to tackle it, then we need to stop pandering to "plus sized" people and start telling people that it's unhealthy to be this weight.

Most people are obese and with change on diet and workout they can get rid of obesity , the problem is morbid obesity ...that is where a lot of people is going more than ever.

I didn't say they gained weight because of trauma, but normalizing obesity is a response from the years of bullying and abuse these people got. People with similar trauma sometimes connect, organize and push their agenda. Then you have some companies that have a lot to gain through that and their message gets boosted.

You can have single digit iq and still notice all the bad things that obesity bring to the table, you don't even need anyone to tell you that.

Heavy breathing, joint pain, back pain, easier to smell bad, lack of stamina, being lethargic and another 100+ things that you just feel in your body.

There is no fucking chance that you can be stupid enough to not listen to your body, people are just fucking lazy and they don't wanna change how they live because at the end of the day, tasty food is one of the best pleasure of life, nobody is gonna convince me of the opposite, being obese is not something that you can ignore.

Like i said, unless you are clinically retarded, you chose to be obese.
