How PewDiePie fired Skate 3 back into the charts (in the UK)

If you follow the UK charts as closely as we do, you will have noticed that Skate 3 has been in the Top 40 all year.

This week the game sits at No.20.

The reason why this is worth noting is because Skate 3 is four years-old. There is no other game of that age in the Top 40.

In fact, MCV can reveal that the Xbox 360 and PS3 game has sold 32.9 per cent more units for the first six months of this year compared with the first half of 2013.

If you head over to YouTube and put in 'Skate 3', you'll find tonnes of comedy videos from prominent YouTubers playing Skate 3. And these videos have been watched by millions. The biggest of all being PewDiePie, one such Skate 3 video by him has been watched by an astonishing 12.37m people. And he has done several videos playing the game.

The result of this coverage has caused a spike in interest. The game was out of print, but the weight of consumer demand at retailer GAME meant the firm requested EA produce more copies. The result has been the title sitting in the charts all year.

I don't care much for the guy but I guess this is another proof that streamers and Youtubers are good for your games. Get#s lots of people exposed to your games.

How? What could be so great about a video of a skateboarding game?

The skate games were good for a laugh. I remember doing a bit of pass-the-pad with some of my friends and it was great. Finding certain spots and see who can actually land certain outrageous tricks there was great, but even better were the wince-inducing bails.

But youtube celebs are not real celebs and they dont have any influence, also they dont deserver to get anything for their videos or streams. They're all just stupid beggers that should get real job.

Ontopic: I love Pewdiepies personality, but cant stand all of hes videos. The character is just too much for me sometimes. :p Super cool to see youtubers get some recognition, I think the medium isnt mature yet and glad to see it getting more mainstream all the time.

Wasnt there research little while ago that said "youngsters" these days know more youtube stars then "real stars"?

I know alot people hate him, i can see why, due to his fake obvious fake reactions.

i dont watch him, but i applaud the guy, he made him self a millionaire just by dropping a few 3 minute video reaction on games, and it does not look like he's slowing down anytime soon.

I am hoping ea revisits the skate franchise. It is amazing how much of an effect he has on the market. Don't really care for him, but I would care for him more if he could get a old school rare game on the top 20.

I'm not saying I don't believe this is the case here. But is there any actual tangible evidence to support a direct link?

Absolutely insane.

Guy is set for life with all that power.

No idea why so many people watch him. Really really blows my mind. One of the craziest things on the net.

I thought it sold well because it's been £10 in supermarkets for over a year. I've always seen it in the Tesco and Asda bargain bin.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that this is the real reason.
