Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes [Impressions from Nasu]

To finish mgsv in 2 hours is like going out for dinner with charlize theron and take her to mcdonalds.

After completing the main mission and a side mission in 4 hours the game says I’m at 10% completion. Sounds good to me

Confirms what I already believed to be true. No way Kojima would ship a game that you could be done with in two hours and price it at 30 or 40 bucks. But sensationalists gonna sensationalize. Shame that publications are more concerned with grabbing headlines and hits rather than reporting the truth. Kinda like the '90 minute cutscene' news of MGS4 that never existed.

What are you talking about? Game informer people beat the game in a hour and a half, they never said you play the game for an hour and then the game disappears forever and you can never play it again.

The defensiveness from people is sad.

Stupid hype-train!

I was actually doing very well distancing myself from MGS: GZ. Didn't want it, was fine waiting for Phantom Pain.

Now I'm itching for it, and not even because of these recent comments or previews. It's really just because I've been reading theories and MGS timelines regarding Phantom Pain and now I'm just in the mood for ANY new MGS I can get my hands on.

I'll likely buy the digital version on my PS4 and use the $10 PSN voucher I still have sitting on my account to get the game for $20.

Maybe if the cover wasn't complete crap I'd think about the disc version.

hey, if you can get it for $20 on ps4, hop aboard that hype train

i'm still unable to justify paying the equivalent of $38-39 for the ps3 version on disk. i really like what i'm hearing about the gameplay after being shaky on the tagging system and reflex mode, but man, they're asking for far too much money for what we're getting.

As sad as publications not telling the whole story.

A lot of this stuff actually sounds interesting to me ($20 worth of interesting), but I'm also kind of skeptical of Metal Gear preview events after that crazy 3-day thing they did for MGS4.

No Hayter, no cardboard boxes? Man, this game is getting more interesting by the second.

Hayter was a terrible voice actor and I didn't like him from the start (MGS2 was my first English MGS, played MGS1 in German). And no cardboard boxes for me means Kojima is trying to get away from his childish humor. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for humor but this shit got really out of hand. Were it was only a few lines and some secretive goofs in MGS1 the humor got extremely forced in MGS4. And, with all due respect, if Kojima wants to make a game with themes like child soldiers humor has no place in this.

Don't mention it! ^_^

After those impressions I suddenly want to buy the game again, I'm just gonna wait for reviews.

Yeah, man! Just wait until you have all of the necessary information available. The game is only a month away, and I'm sure by the time it comes out, you'll have all of the info you need.

As sad as publications not telling the whole story.

To be fair, Game Informer spent four hours with the game and stated that they played through the main story mission twice and one side mission. They have nothing to hide, and probably gave about as much information as they possibly could have. With the exception of the price tag (in which they simply said that people would complain about it), they had nothing but positive things to say about the game.

EDIT (for what it's worth):

Giacomo Vaccari ‏@GiacomoVaccari:
#MGSVGZNASU Just cleared the first objective in the hardesyt possible settings. Lovers of classic MGS challenges will be pleased.

Giacomo Vaccari ‏@GiacomoVaccari:
#MGSVGZNASU There is an incredible amount of depth to this game. I was in awe several times at the AI's reaction and the enviroment.

So Game Informer was supposed to tell people there is potentially dozens of hours of content based on the four hours they got to play the game.

Sounds completely unreasonable.

Yes, because that's how words work.

A journalist, a magazine, a news channel, whatever they are, know the power of the words they spout. By omitting information, they can paint pictures in whatever light they choose. It's all around you.

Andy Robinson ‏@Espio1:
MGS GZ update: played through all missions (about 5 hours) but still only at 22%, according Snake's chain smoking menu screen.

Wondering we got no PS3 impressions for months now...

Patch Notes (ver. 1.01)

Added DLC menu. You can now purchase new items for Snake to use in the main Ground Zeroes Sneaking Mission.

 • Cardboard box [Castlevania] $1.99
 • Cardboard box [Frito-lay] $1.99
 • Cardboard box [Sony] $1.99
 • Cardboard box [Suntory] $1.99
 • Cardboard box [Uniqlo] $1.99

Fixed.

What

That Ground Zeroes really is Phantom Pain, and the playtime is actually 500 hours.

I mean I don't get the magazine so I don't know the entirety of the preview, but the bits that were being quoted basically said that they beat the main mission in 90 minutes and played around with some side missions and modes (acknowledging that they exist) in their extra time with the game. There's more to do but if you were just playing that core content it was pretty short. Collectible dogtags or whatever else makes up the completion percentage doesn't change that.

The idea that it's some evil publication trying to smear the game is some real GameFAQs shit.

I know its not the biggest deal, but it sucks if this game doesnt have cardboard boxes.
Its a staple of the franchise.
I cant even think of 1 reason why they wouldnt be included.

These tweets interest me... Fan service plus intentionally showing off one of the game's two ("basically two") cutscenes.

I'm not sure what GI omitted from their own impressions at all besides not putting a disclaimer at the end telling people not to blame them for their positive impressions while reporting how long it took for them to complete the main mission and 1 side mission.

I guess that disclaimer is proving to be necessary though. That's how disclaimers work.

Some people will be fine with the length for the price, others will not, but it's not GI's fault for posting their own impressions. Hell, we still don't know what the other "91%" is anyway from these impressions besides the side missions. If it's running around looking for collectables, then that doesn't magically justify the price to 99.9% of the people who were against it before. If those side missions are a lot beefier than expected, then that's a good thing.

I'll get this eventually when it's reasonably priced. I'm a huge MGS fan, but that doesn't mean I'll defend this price and place blame elsewhere because we have no reason to.

Does anyone know how the game will look on PS3? I think all the gameplay/trailers release till now were on PS4 or X1.

Canceled preorder. Won't pay 40 bucks for basic playtime of 2hrs. I don't care if you can stretch it with additional goals. I'll get Splinter Cell Blacklist. For the same price or less you get way more content plus you won't have to deal with silly characters like Quiet and all that shit. Everyone else: have fun.

I'm pretty sure those were all on PC. I'm more worried about the download size atm, since I'm not paying an extra $10 for a disc. I think the game should look fine on PS360, just don't expect any nice resolutions and it will definitely be 30fps.

Kojima probably wouldn't; Konami is.

A lot of people seem to misunderstand that and it's fundamental to the argument.

"Kojima shouldn't have to justify X"

"Kojima wouldn't do Y"

Yeah. But nobody is talking about Kojima. The issue us what Konami's doing. Their "new profit model". Their revenue scheme.

No, it's the worst thing ever. Hayter's voice was iconic. He was Snake (Both of them..).

It arguably would've been better if Hayter was never Naked Snake/Big Boss. Not that I dislike his performance, but as Solid/Liquid/Solidus all had different voice actors, I would've hoped BB had the same.

If they were gonna get rid of Hayter, they should've gone with John Cygan (Solidus). Or hell, even Richard Doyle (Big Boss in MGS4).

The lines I've heard from Kiefer's performance have been absolutely terrible.

I'd love to hear Cygan or Doyle sample their voices for younger BB. And do hope Kiefer's performance gets better.

Yeah. But nobody is talking about Kojima. The issue us what Konami's doing. Their "new profit model". Their revenue scheme.

What other creator or franchise under Konami could do this? All I can think of is Castlevania and Silent Hill, and I have a hard time thinking either could be bought into as acceptably as MG. MGS has at least done something similar in the past, albeit in one game.

Tweets in one place:

Finished GZ for the first time in about 90 minutes. Total game completion? 9%. I think that tells you all you need to know.

A lot of exposition that would have been in cutscenes before is now on audio tapes. Don’t have to pause to listen, thankfully

The whole thing feels faster paced as a result, less reliant on cutscenes with more storytelling through gameplay. It’s great.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Just saw the ending. Goosebumps. Disbelief. Shock. *reboots game* I’m going back in.

It’s lovely to see how intense @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN’s passion is for proper, epic, emotionally driven, high-end productions.

I’d like to point out that this game is not a 2 hour game… Ground Zeroes is a great demonstration of the FOX Engine.

The game now really requires you to look at your surroundings. Objects make noise and get knocked around. Nice on @Konami.

Every soldier in Ground Zeroes has a unique appearance. Their faces, taken from real photos, appear only once per game.

To finish mgsv in 2 hours is like going out for dinner with charlize theron and take her to mcdonalds.

After completing the main mission and a side mission in 4 hours the game says I’m at 10% completion. Sounds good to me

So yeah, the main mission of Ground Zeroes is short. BUT, you really are not going to find and discover everything in 2 hours.

Controls are much, much better than in MGS4. Really easy to do all the stuff you want, easier to interrogate enemies etc.

Btw, the frame rate is butter smooth on PS4.

I’m only playing on PS4, but I think Mr Kojima has already said that the PS4 version is smoother than the One version.

They have PS4 and Xbox One here, I don’t think I’ve seen a last gen version.

Completed a full-stealth run of MGSV:GZ. Stealth is the best it’s been yet. Controls are more fluid while staying true to MGS.

I’m finding 3-5 distinct ways of achieving every objective using only stealth. Going for gun-down run next.

Fox Engine’s facial animations are the best in the industry. Ending to MGSV:GZ is extremely impressive and emotional.

Damn, I cant wait to play it. Great news about soldier apperiances and more story being told during gameplay [codec talks].

lol
. But seriously your opinion does not belong anywhere near MGS. Hayter was the shit.

Just chalked off another Side Op, which involved running from a tank. Been playing 4 hours now and apparently at 18% complete

Not sure I can say much about the main GZ story mission, but it features one of the most gruesome scenes I can remember in a game

There are lots of sandbox meta games for online competition; longest distance headshot etc.

Right so I'm currently playing through GZ's Side Ops. They add new objectives to the main story's Cuba base. Some stealth, some action

gameplay? This 'basically' is probably a misguided attempt to exaggerate the gameplay portion of the game. If true that's even more worrying, however. No, I doubt there's 'basically' two cutscenes.
