NPD Sales Results for January 2014 [Up3: PS4/XB1 #1/#2 best selling; Poke/SM3DW/ALBW]

I know this is NPD but why hasn't Sony given us an update on Worldwide PS4 numbers? Surely they've passed their 5 million estimate.

They're almost certainly waiting for the Japanese launch to provide them with some good, PR-friendly results to flaunt. If you haven't noticed, both companies really like to bang on about single-day launch sales, record-breaking weekends, and other things that are ultimately kind-of trivial novelties as a prelude before they stop farting around and just give us what we came for.

PS4 - 271K
XB1 - 141K
PS3 ~53.5K
Wii U ~49K
360 ~48.5K

Everything else combined ~84K.

Setting aside how bad some of these are for a moment, 3DS numbers must be shocking for something that should be still reasonably viable??

EDIT: Need clarification on whether Sony is including handhelds.

17.1% of Nintendo publisher software revenues were from Wii U this month.

lol

that's it

kidding.

PS3 January 2014:
-67% from last January (adjusted)
-82% from December 2013

Xbox 360 January 2014:
-78% from last January (adjusted)
-92% from December 2013

Creamsugar:

Xbox 360 < 50K
PS3 < 60K

Go wild, GAF.

I think this puts the final nail in the coffin for the argument that PS3 or 360 might eventually outsell the Wii worldwide.

yeah im really blown away by this. i thought 360 would cling on the longest.

Same. I actually expected the 360 to trail along slowly due to the expense of the Xbox One. Weird to see it dying quicker than the PS3 even though it has curried favour in the US over Sony's console for so long.

Shouldn't we be happy last generation sales are quickly dropping? Get developers off them faster and focus on current generation consoles.

But..how? Isn't the US traditionally Microsoft territory? I expected the 360 to at least best the two other older consoles.

Microsoft basically stopped supporting(and marketing I'm guressing) the 360 and every other platform actually has exclusives to buy. It kinda sucks for them because dead 360 + weak Xbox One sales/possible price cut = hurt for the Xbox division.

These are really bad numbers for the console industry as a whole.

I think if it's going to survive, it may be in the Steam Machine model: A single gaming ecosystem with multiple SKUs of different power and purpose. There wouldn't be any such thing as a "new" console per se, although you would probably need to buy a new system eventually for the more powerful games. They might simplify it some from the Steam Machine model by having specific specs for low, middle, and high-end models so games could run more consistently.

But it does seem like the current model of discrete hardware generations, with library resets for each one, is harder and harder for people to justify in this day and age.

Not for ps4. The console is still in short supply across the US. So until the console can stabilize we cannot say anything yet. Of it drops to say 20,000 next month then by all means you can start crystal balling.

Also do you have any history with NPD? The ps4 is within regular numbers for the January drop.

Pretty bleak for Microsoft overall. At least Sony is selling pretty much everything they can make with the PS4, that's the only silver lining here.

While new last-gen hardware isn't selling, don't forget that both PS3 and X360 still have huge installed userbases. Publishers are going to want to take advantage of this for a bit longer before reading them any last rites.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Complete collapse. I'm shocked, can we get confirmation please?

Tomb Raider under performing after selling 4 to 5 million copies says something more about SE than it does the gaming market.

If you like big-budget games, you should want them to make their sales targets, because those sales targets are what justify AAA development in the first place. If they didn't believe it would sell the 8 million or whatever, it wouldn't have gotten made. And you can't just downscale because then you're selling a mid-tier game and we all know what the market for those is like.

PS3 needs a price drop. To $199 at least or to really make waves $149 when you buy 2 years PS+. That is where the ps2 made a lot of it's sales.

Looks like you guys are gonna get that Kinect-les SKU after all. There's no way Microsoft can keep a $500 console on the market.

Even at $400 without Kinect it's overpriced. TR sales proves people are going to go PS4 for third party.

i figured the cheapest price and minecraft would be the reasons it held on

The issue is that even if PS4 does well it can't make up for the 180 million consoles Microsoft and Nintendo sold last gen. We're heading for a gigantic market contraction unless something changes.

I think Sony has probably hit around 5 million world wide at the least.

I'm guessing not. They were at what, 4.2 at new year? They did 270ish in the us, I doubt they did 600k WW. Isn't the us about 30-40% of WW usually? And that typically includes Japan.

After Japan, yes, they will be north of 5 mil easily, I assume.

Unless we see price cuts I'm expecting the 3DS to be a slow seller until the Q3 or so.

Geez. Last gen drop is massive.

They're 7-8 years old and are more expensive than any 7-8 year old consoles in history, especially in comparison to their successors ($200-300 vs. $400-500.)

As a comparison, at the launch of the 360 the original Xbox was four years old and $149 vs. the 360's $300-400 and at the launch of the PS3 the PS2 was six years old and $129 vs. the PS3's $500-600.

Time for a price drop.

No kidding. Hell, for comparison's sake, you could get a PS2 for $130 within the first year of the 360's lifespan, and that had been out for less years than the current last-gen consoles comparatively. Not to suggest it'll be some amazing second-wind type thing, but it'd have to help compared to these numbers.
