Crysis 3 PC Performance Thread

You guys were totally right. I clocked it down a bit and played for about an hour straight with no problems. Just a little upset that my card is voltage locked.

Anyone else, while playing multiplayer, have random moments where the FPS is incredibly low (~5 FPS) upon starting a match? I have to reboot the game to fix it by killing it in task manager since the whole game becomes nearly unresponsive. Why does this happen?

Maldo posted his unlocked/on-the-fly Crysis 3 exe: http://maldotex.blogspot.com/2013/02/maldo-onthefly-for-crysis-3.html

I want his C2 exe as well! Maldooo!

Awesome.

Whats stopping Maldo releasing something similar for Crysis 2. And what is this at the bottom of the blog post?:

Multigpu users: Disable SLI or CFX in your drivers to play first level with better performance.
Vsync issues: disable vsync in game options and set vsync on in drivers or DXOverrider. If you see vsync is off after loading game, press twice Alt+Enter until game activate vsync.

What exactly is the issue with SLI/CF on the 1st level?

He didnt release anything similar for C2, because cvars are unlocked via his mod in C2.

The "bind" functions still don't work for me though for some reason in C2. Would be niceto have something similar for that reason.

Hi guys, I am also having DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED errors, I tried everything from under clocking to over clocking the card. Funny thing is, I bought a Gigabyte 660 OC just so I can play this game smoothly! (And I got a decent deal for it)

Apart from that, it runs stellar on a mostly very high/high config with 4xSMAA. And it looks gorgeous!

Funny thing was that the error was constant on the first level, then non existant after that during the grass fields and then started up again on the Dam level, it happens so frequently that is is unplayable.

Pretty depressed at the moment : (

Specs are:
AMD 1090t
MSI 790GX-G65 mobo
8gb ram
Gigabyte 660OC
FSP Aurum CM Gold 750 W

The power supply is only a couple months old (it should be more that powerful to power it up right?), bought the card yesterday.. Obviously the motherboard is rather old, would that be causing it? I doubt it though, Every other game that I have tested so far is running without a hiccup, it's just Crysis 3...

Level of detail on objects at distances I think. Is there a good place to get a breakdown of each option and what all it controls?

Patch 1.2 is out: http://www.mycrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=62409&sid=384358d8895a8badb151a1325b129f89

• Fixed after-match award dog tags from not loading from the profile correctly
• Fixed root cause of some graphics driver crashes
• Fixed particle shader causing black squares/broken shading on some graphics cards
• Fixed shadering issue with underwater fog
• Fixed issues with non-default controls for weapon customization
• Fixed some issues with binding non-default vehicle controls

Good job.

So... a bit LTTP here.

I just beat the game and from a purely technical standpoint, i thought it was crazy good. My pc specs are: 2500k@4.6, gtx 670, 8gb ram played @ 1080p. Aside from the first level(or two?), i got a locked 30fps with everything MAXED out the rest of the game(sans AA). I thought there was a consensus that the game was highly unoptomized but i would disagree.

The scale, visual density and particle effects really made it look next gen. And i found that they could have easily made the game open world, or similar to Crysis 1 but obviously decided against it(for the worse too). The visuals certainly warranted the performance i think. Too bad the game was just okay. Also can't believe that it cost $66 million to make

HardOCP has their video performance review of Crysis 3 up.

http://hardocp.com/article/2013/03/12/crysis_3_video_card_performance_iq_review#.UT9QSFdTCP0

Summary is shadow quality and post processing have the largest impacts on performance so lower those first.

In terms of AA, avoid TXAA at all costs, massive blurring and performance hit. SMAA Low and Medium are practically free in terms of performance cost and provide excellent anti aliasing with no blur. And FXAA is also free and provides solid anti aliasing with a slight blur. MSAA has an added alpha coverage component similar to Far Cry 3 but also has a hefty performance cost.

They have a comparison of all the AA modes but not any of the other graphics settings so if someone wants to toss up a few pics comparing maxed and medium/low shadows or post processing, that'd be cool.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
What settings do people recommend for best quality/performance ratio on normal systems (not dual GPUs and overclocks etc)? 3770K, 7970 OC 3GB, 16GB 1600. I don't have numbers as I only just reinstalled fraps after the fact but performance didn't seem great when setting everything on High except textures (Very High). I'd like some AA for this game too since it's so very aliased otherwise. I'm just at the first jungle bit.

based on the hardocp article I would try smaa and fxaa and see which you prefer, both are relatively free performance wise.

There's this really annoying visual distortion that constantly expands like 5m ahead of Prophet as you move around. At first I thought it's shadow LOD but shadow settings don't affect it, it is only solved if you set shading to Very High which impacts performance even with everything else on Medium (which otherwise allows for a smooth 99% constant 60fps so far). Is there a tweak for it? I suppose it sets the detail and distance at which shader surface effects take effect. It looks really bad to me, I always hate LOD transitions and this is among the worst outside in your face pop in of objects. Is there a way to smooth it out without that big of a performance hit?

Edit: looks like I can maintain 60fps minimum most of the time if I turn vsync off. I guess the game isn't triple buffered? Can that be forced somehow? I don't understand why it's not a basic driver feature for D3D yet.

So I am finally ready to play this game for reals this time.

Is there any handy config files out that super-max out the graphics?

If not, is there a guide somewhere to help with maxing stuff out? Reading the link in the OP (welcome back Sethos, a grievously unfair ban I am sure), there sure a lot of stuff that can be tweaked.

Download the Maldo tweak from his website.. if not.. just jacing everything up to Ultra (very high in C3) basically maxers all your cvars.

I recommend also increasing the motionblur time scale to some number which is closer to 1. r_motionblurshutterspeed or something. Increasing that to a number closer to 1 should exaggeration some motionblur. I recommend incrememntally turning that up until you find it looks good.

Will boot this up this weekend to see how the updates and drivers have improved. Maybe some multiplayer is in order, I quite enjoyed it the first few weeks.

So I downloaded Maldos tweak and in the readme it says to

".Run Enable_MaLDoC3.bat into "Crysis 3\Bin32" folder."

But I don't see any .bat file among the files I downloaded.....

Anyone know what is meant here?

For some reason those files are not in the 1.2 download. Download 1.0 and use the enable files from there:

http://www.shacknews.com/file/34467/crysis-3-maldo-on-the-fly-tool-10

Its a shame that there wont be a version of the on the fly tool for 1.3 as well.

Forget that

Download this and use into your "Origin\Crysis 3" folder

With 1.3 patch is not necessary to change the executable anymore.

Press "8" key to activate ultra config while playing (or add "exec maldo_ultra.cfg" in the end into autoexec.cfg). But it's an optimized preset, not a UberHyperUltra setting.

for speaking english natively.. my hands seem to betray the words in my brain when I type.
I should probably proof read more often.

I'm finally releasing my Crysis 3 Tweak Guide, although obviously it is quite late and probably of little use to most people. I apologize for the almost six week delay between its completion and public release - this was outside my control. As I mentioned in a previous update, because of these repeated and lengthy delays, I have chosen to cease writing game guides for Nvidia. So this is the last game guide I'll be releasing until I find another sponsor. For anyone interested in the behind-the-scenes details of my three years of work for Nvidia, and just what went wrong with the Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3 Tweak Guides, I've prepared an article entitled My Nvidia Story.

I am very new to all of this and I have a lot of questions.

My system specs:

Gtx 770 2GB of ram

Core I5 4570 running at 3.2 ghz

8 gigs of general purpose ram

Questions:

1) How good is the geforce experience app? I tried to optimize the game and I still feel like it ran poorly.

2) Is there a way for me to see my frame rate, and is there a way to lock it?

3) What should I acutally be running this game at setting wise?

4) Im running the game on a TV does that affect the performance at all? Besides resoultion, frame rate, the stuff moniters usually control

2) I use a program called MSI Afterburner. It's free, and no, you don't need to own a card made by MSI to use it. Pressing + and - will display your framerate, as well as several other things you can tell it to display, like GPU temp, fan speed, fan %, etc. You can also use it to set a fan profile, take screenshots, and record video.

Also with it is the OSD Server, which allows you to set a framerate cap for any game you want. Just add the game's exe to the list, and click on the wrench to set it up.

Or you can just type "sys_maxfps 30" (or whatever number you wanna cap the framerate at) in the console.

http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

3) I run it at max settings with a GTX 670, and just cap it at 30fps.

4) Not that I know of. I play on a TV, too.

Thanks, I just installed MSI afterburner. However, at full settings its telling me that Im getting 5 FPS. That cant be right, can it?

Now its saying Im getting 10 FPS in metro last light. I know that isnt true, because the game is playable.

Since this thread has been closed, I will answer here:

95FPS? Magic. ;o On medium settings, 1080p, C3 runs at 60FPS on a 670.
http://youtu.be/AVj20MeF71Y

:)

Looks pretty good, may I ask what CPU do you have in your machine.

i5 2500K!
@default :p

Why on earth would anyone want 95 fps?

That either means you're using a 120 Hz display and failing to hit the target framerate or have disabled v-sync and seeing tearing. Not even a CRT monitor is going to offer 95 Hz.

Aside that was simply a test, just for curiosity, because I play the game at higher settings, I've a 120Hz monitor.
Among the benefits, it has set me free from V-Sync and Triple Buffering and their crap input lag. ;)

Everything 60 and above looks amazing on a 120hz/144hz monitor.

Pretty much.

One of the best gaming investments I've ever made.

Yup.
I can't go back! :)

Sorry to bring this thread back up.

I made a whole new PC a while back, 3570K, 8GB DDR3, GTX 760, and thought i would fire up Crysis 3 to see how it now runs (i think i originally played it on Low/Medium, maybe with a 560Ti).

1080p
Very High Textures
Very High Image Quality
4xMSAA

Game ran a bit poorly, but i expected this knowing it was quite a hog on the highest settings and also with AA, so i dropped to high and dropped AA. Game runs really well, however there is 1 thing that drives me mad, and reminded me of Crysis 1 back when it came out ......

Stuttering, and i think i have whittled it down to when i use an explosive on some guys around foliage/trees, the game pauses for half a second, so when im trying to blow shit up ... it feels janky as hell. Does anyone else have this ?

Use custom settings, like Water and Shadows at Very High and use SMAA 4x.

Leave geometry and Shading at High, but change r_ssdo 1 and r_ssao 0.

Been awhile but I fired it up again, still getting the hitching, so made a video of it -

http://youtu.be/HvwLbDxmsZw

Hopefully it shows it off, as I walk into the main area, and also as the arrows explode, I just want to see if that's "normal" so to speak. Can anyone else go to this area and do what I did and see if they get the same result ?
