Rime: Microsoft rejected Tequila Works’ game before it became PS4 exclusive

I hate how I start to really like this guy. When he talks I just want to punch his face, but he is way too nice and honest on twitter...

He's a nice guy but for me the way the last remaining years of the 360 1st party ended up was awfully predictable. I hope they don't take that route with XB1 too.

Are people really getting hyped for a game from a design brief? I'm sure duke nukem forever sounded good on paper too ;)

People are hyped for what we've seen of the game through screens and teasers coupled with this pitch info of what TW was originally looking to create. Whether or not all those elements survived into what Rime is now, we don't know, but if even half that stuff made it in I'd be really happy.

They probably rejected it because the previous games from these guys weren't good and so they didn't think 3 million would worth spending on this.

Pretty sure Nintendo and Sony reject a whole lot of game proposals as well...

That's true but Sony and Nintendo have more 1st party studios than Microsoft. Turning down exclusives does not help their library, and Microsoft this year alone spent $400 million on an NFL deal, and however many millions to keep Titanfall off of PS3 and PS4. Money that could have been used to open up many new 1st party development studios that would make more exclusives that benefit the XB1's library.

MS has actually been pretty good with new IPs so far I think. And they have announced others for this year. A fair amount. To me they have a healthy balance right now of new Ips as well as sequels to IP's we all enjoy. I know I like new IP's but at the same time love follow ups to old ones as well. That goes for both systems. Love a new uncharted, god of war, halo, gears, etc. at the same time enjoyed Ryse and Max a lot and hope they make follow ups to both.

There is a long painful road from a cool idea to a good videogame, you need a competent team to pull that off. After Deadlight I'm not sure if I should be exited about this.

Sounds great in paper thou!

If the game is essentially Orcs Must Die with a "Wind Waker" skin over it, I don't really see what the big deal is about this game.
We've seen zero gameplay.

Deadlight's gameplay was kept under wraps until the very end as well.
People thought it would be the next Shadow Complex but the end result was nothing like that.

I would guess it had a lot to do with Deadlight not being very good. I'm really looking forward to Rime though and while I have no idea how well it plays, it's a beautiful looking game.

There's some good evidence that the reason 1P floundered while they pushed for Kinect is that Mattrick wasnted the Wii audience and pushing out 1P they probably wouldn't play wasn't going to get that audience.

Edit: Basing this off of sentiments and some arguments I've read on GAF and Reddit, among other places.

Isn't he now the head of Microsoft Studios now? If he is, he is moving up the ladder.

He's been head of Microsoft Studios for a while time (replaced Shane Kim I believe), he's in charge of their 1st party output.

I don't think he's head of Xbox, I think its split with Marc Whitten and some others, I've seen other people with the same job title as him "Corporate vice president" or something then Julie Larson-Green is who he reports to...

The NFL means more to Americans than Rime. Makes sense to me.

You know Sony had this short sighted attitude on the PS1, they were not fans of 2d games on that console. They actively encouraged devs and publishers to use 3d.

Design pillar 1 makes me very excited for this, more so than I was before.

Hope it really has deep survival gameplay.

The XB1 is sold in more places than the United States, and Rime will be released worldwide.

Spending $400 million to have the blurb "the Official Console of the NFL", a fantasy football app, and an ad featuring two football players, isn't exactly helping them win over the US audience, as evident by the recent NPD figures.

Yep. Sony ditched Remember me from dontnod.

Dontnod filed for bankruptcy last month.

From the interview i posted before:

[...]Then the Xbox One plans were announced and everything changed. The people at Microsoft say that the game doesn't fit in the strategy of the new console, that they are looking for "connected experiences" and the social factor. Rime didn't fit because it was a single-player game, a very traditional game experience. [...]

So I guess this means Below will be all of those things...

Interesting.

I'm very happy that this happened, but don't forget that back in the day, Sony rejected Super Meat Boy and 'Splosion Man...

Times have changed though, and definitely for the better

Would not at all be surprised if MS rejected it because Tequila Works had previously made one of the worst platformers ever.

I don't get the point your trying to make here. If remember me was exclusive then chances are it would have sold worse than if it were mulitplat. Why the indie reference?
