Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for 2 Billion US Dollars

Before this, their agenda was a single focus. The goal of immersive VR was all that was on the table.

Now I feel like if Facebook feels like it, they could just easily disappear. They're part of a much bigger agenda now, but a small, non-core part.

Not to mention there could be the usual post-acquisition departures in 18-24 months.
Yeah ,they can and try and say things wont change but I just don't see it.

Wow.

I guess it goes to show Sony's project morpheus was a wise and long term move. They're their only viable competitor atm. Facebook and Sony will be duking it out for marketshare.

Facebook will possibly make VR mainstream if they succeed.

Queue, Microsoft and Nintendo kickstarting their own renditions.

I don't think anyone would have predicted this one coming.

I am in shock.

Shame that the product will likely be riddled full of shit now if the core experience is even still a focus with Facebook as the owner.

If you told me a year ago that John Carmack would be working for Facebook, I would have said you where bat shit insane. I know there is a chance he will leave the company now, but still..........

I don't think this is a bad thing at all. Not until they try to meddle with the way it is delivered. Think about it, you'll still be plugging in an Oculus Rift and booting up a game. I highly doubt adverts are going to pop up.

This is exciting. I don't see this changing much, but I'm not surprised by the insane reactions.
Even a quick skimming of the PR would inform you that they'll continue to operate independently within the company, if anything accelerated by facebook.

No company states they are going to fuck up something when they first buy them.

It will happen over time.

LOL, it begins.

Ok, more seriously though, I really, really hope OR made it clear and included it in the contract that they want to move the gaming scene forward (along with other stuff , not just on simple games on facebook and mobile. Seeing Mark Zuckenberg's message, he says at least that OR will work independently for their goals, so that's good. But we'll see...

In a way, as horrible as this sounds in general, it can certainly be good for OR. They can get massive publicity and exposure to the mainstream this way. They can also get far more resources now.

But man, this just came out of nowhere so suddenly. Smart move by facebook though. VR/AR is the future, though it might still take a while to get there.

Here's the quote from Zuckenberg's facebook post. It doesn't sound that bad at least.
Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.

But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.

Does anyone know what Facebook's angle is here? Have they been talking about this type of technology?
Isn't it obvious enough? VR/AR is the future and Facebook believes that. Nothing more needed. It's a damn smart move by them most likely.

Imo, there's something a little different about browsing people profiles in VR. The actual set up and design would be nice but ehh only time will tell.

i dont understand the reactions on here, shouldnt we be happy a big company with practically unlimited funds is going to try push vr forward? lets face it, vr would need to be backed with huge sum of cash if it is to be successful and fb have just that

i may live to regret these words but as of now i am excited so see what they have up their sleeve

ghst

thanks for the laugh
i'm not sure why you guys think sony will be pleased with this? i can almost hear the sound of facebook's lawyers fabricating patent claims.

oculus had the momentum, but they also had a reasonable egalitarian "what's best for VR is best for us" approach to competition. i can't imaging the satanic legal & marketing pools at facebook adopting the policy.

Isn't not reading the OP a bannable offense?

People shitting all over themselves would save so much energy if they took a minute to read the fucking op.

I've said it before and I'll say it again if there is another video game industry crash Vr is going to be the thing that drives everything else off the cliff.

I just don't think the mainstream audience are going to go for it in a big way. The tech may have improved but the product is still the same.
