I'm a sad panda.
Yeah ,they can and try and say things wont change but I just don't see it.Before this, their agenda was a single focus. The goal of immersive VR was all that was on the table.
Now I feel like if Facebook feels like it, they could just easily disappear. They're part of a much bigger agenda now, but a small, non-core part.
Not to mention there could be the usual post-acquisition departures in 18-24 months.
Valve makes money hand over fist, but I don't think they have that kind of liquidity. $2 billion is insane.
.
This is exciting. I don't see this changing much, but I'm not surprised by the insane reactions.
Even a quick skimming of the PR would inform you that they'll continue to operate independently within the company, if anything accelerated by facebook.
" I'M RICH MOTHERFUCKERS "
It would be cool for educational purposes, but I don't see many schools being able to afford it.
Plus the game industry is more profitable than education.
I give it a week.inb4 a new VR kickstarter appears that promises to "stay true" to gaming and not to sell out to a mega corp.
Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.
But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.
Isn't it obvious enough? VR/AR is the future and Facebook believes that. Nothing more needed. It's a damn smart move by them most likely.Does anyone know what Facebook's angle is here? Have they been talking about this type of technology?
You have a point, but it's still shocking news right here on the gaming side of it.
Facebook will spend money on it. Expect a significant push for the consumer version in the near future. With endless money they may get there.
