So, as a Kickstarter backer, how much of this 2 billion do I get back?

and this, ladies and gentleman is why Kickstarter has become a joke. It's like playing venture capitalist without getting back anything from potential success. Still don't understand why people do it... it's so silly

wat

Also holy shit, Palmer Lucky goes from VR hobbyist to billionaire in just shy of 3 years. I can't exactly fault him for selling at that price. But man FB is also gonna live or die on this acquisition, I just hope Oculus' future doesn't go down in flames with them if they do fall.

Zero. I just talked about this on here today. Equity crowdfunding is held back by the accredited investor status which only the extremely rich can ever attain, but it seems there is a US law on the way to allow it but Kickstarter probably won't be the service that will make use of it.

There are some sites that already offer it in the mean time:

WHAT WHAT WHAT. This is the biggest news of the year so far by a long shot.

I wonder if Carmack will stay.

Honestly wonder if this was the end game of the venture capitalists that invested the 75 million into Oculus. God, if they just did a pump and dump to make a quick buck on a startup I'll be so fucking pissed. Having a singular focus with no corporate overlords to answer to made them seem like a promising company willing to take their time to get it right. Being tied to a company owned by shareholders who always want results now, it's hard not to worry that corners will slowly get cut to make a buck.

But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.

That doesn't sound ominous at all. No sir.

Okay, I'll admit, the first reaction in my head was "Okay someone needs to die. now", like many others also thought if I'm reading this thread right.

But then... I... I mean, it's good for the tech, I guess :/
This will definitely help with the whole making VR mainstream part of everything, and if Zuck spent $2B on it, I fucking doubt he'll go "Okay, now what is this? 75 hz? 1080p? all these sensors? Nah, scrap that, reduce cost."

But I am worried, for sure. Deep down I fear that they'll fuck shit up.
Let's hope they basically just think it's cool and just want to finance it.
I think everyone (after their initial freakout) is praying super hard that this is the case. Because it's true, Instagram didn't go to shit after the acquisition. This could work....

Some choice quotes from Mark Zuckerberg which gives some hope.

Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate.

We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.

Good spot BraXy. Two green shoots of hope in an arid desert skepticism. If its just Facebook throwing money behind it and keeping hands off the project, this is great news. However, for the pessimists (like me), the fears of FB Trojan Horsing intrusive commercialism into the most promising tech device for years is not baseless.

Ugh. Really unhappy with this news... guess I'll wait to see how their company is changed, what product they ultimately sell now, and how influenced it is by Facebook.

I want that glorious VR future untainted =(

Oh god, this makes me so uneasy. Yes, they'll have a lot of money backing R&D, but how long will the autonomy last? Will Oculus still focus on gaming? I just feel the future for Oculus is more unclear now than it was yesterday.

Now I can see that Aunt Jean has unlocked a new level on Candy Crush in VR! Oh and I can't wait for the anti-Obama pics in VR! yay!

Facebook doesn't do anything the right way.

Oh I know they don't, but they will throw cash at anything on a whim. If they actually feel like there is something there and they fund it correctly and leave it alone (hopefully), they could push this thing out to the consumer faster than OR could alone.

If I were Sony I wouldn't be dancing in the streets. OR now has unlimited funding and will likely be pushed across the board.

Isn't not reading the OP a bannable offense?

People shitting all over themselves would save so much energy if they took a minute to read the fucking op.

Friend, similar statements appear in practically every press release about popular companies that get acquired, even if the parent company is planning the exact opposite. It's meaningless.

So much hate pouring in about this deal. I think it's great because it just means VR is coming in a big way. I can't wait to see what the Oculus team can do now.
