My takeaway:

I don't really get the close minded comments of "But VR is so un-social". They will probably come up with ways to connect via VR.

And anyway, when Google started tinkering with self-driven cars, did people think "Holy shit, is it gonna search itself there?"

it will probably mean a very light weight version of oculus now, think google glass.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Yea I dunno the side of me that doesn't make money in the gaming industry is having a tough time seeing all the positivity in this news.

FB is pretty sketchy

If there's one loser in this battle, it's kickstarter.com as users will become much more affraid of investing their money into projects due to what just happened with Facebook buying OR and losing all their cakes..

Yup. All the original backers should be given stock options.

What is realistically facebooks plan for this? It can't be triple a gaming can it? If it is the social side of things, eg tourism, how much are people going to be willing to pay for a device that will more than likely cost the same as actually going seeing the sites they want to see?

This certainly isn't what I expected to see when waking up from my nap.

My gut reaction is negative, but hopefully the team at Oculus really are left alone for the most part and are able to continue what they're doing, but with more money and resources.

I'm curious as to whether this will impact Development Kit 2 in any way.

Yeah, people are really gonna strap this thing to their head to play FarmVille and browse their feeds...

This acquisition makes no sense unless it's just an acquisition for the sake of saying that Facebook owns it. If they interfere with what Oculus had planned, this is bad news because that means that everything that was happening before this was worth nothing.

Is this seriously the only thing you can imagine happening with this acquisition? You think Facebook wants this for just a browser and gaming? I think a lot of people are getting too caught up in the name "Facebook" to recognize that this doesn't have to be limited to just their website. I see this move as a way of expanding the reach of Facebook in the same way Google expanded their reach from being just a search browser. Opportunities to watch samples of live shows, take tours of hotels before booking, even getting the chance to see what your friends are seeing. The potential in this is very exciting now that a mainstream name is attached to the tech.

Wow, this thread is like KNEEJERK APOCALYPSE.

Perfect description.

As someone who's interested in the Oculus Rift specifically, but also interested in the possibilities for VR generally, I find this move incredibly exciting. I'm not a huge fan of Facebook, considering I only activate my account when I need it to RSVP to something or if I want to get in touch with someone, but man...is it just me, or does the advent of mainstream VR seem all the more inevitable now?

I thought Facebook was on the way down, i'm sure i read that people were leaving Facebook (and other social media stuff) in droves. I thought the 'bubble' had burst.

Amazing news!!! With the backing of Facebook, Oculus has a chance of becoming something big and not get dethroned by copycats (sony, msft, valve, etc.)

This whole affair is pure gold for DER UNTERGANG treatment.

"Mein Fuehrer. AAA gaming is in a steady creative & sales decline. Budgets are ballooning, studios are closing everywhere and new IPs are rarely greenlit."

"This will all come in order when the consumer version of the Occulus Rift arrives in 2015"

"Mein Fuehrer...Occulus Rift just got sold to FACEBOOK for 2 billion.

I'm afraid the Rift will serve as the final piece to the corporatocratic-intelligence-data-mining network to keep citizens sedated and under watch 24/7. They will most probably use it for online chatting & dating with 3d avatars wearing monetized vanity items."

"Core gamers stay in the room, everybody else LEAVE!"

Thank you for making that list. Hopefully this will cool down people a bit. We can still complain and lose our shit when things change for the worse.

I'm seeing both sides of the argument. More funds and possibilities is definitely great, but I'm unconvinced this doesn't mean the long term picture might change even if both parties are now genuinely committed to it. What is crystal clear however is that people view the product has definitely changed now.

Sorry guys, but Facebook is not synonymous with high-end PC gaming, no matter how much you want to try and believe this is a good thing for VR. It's not. It's up to Sony or MS now.

As a software engineer, they are a synonym with applied artificial intelligence to me. And also with open source software. That people don't like their product is one thing. Technically, Facebook is one of the best companies out there.

As I said before, every high tech company comes to this point sooner or later. High tech companies need diversification. This is just the beginning for FB.

This is either great or terrible news for Sony. Either they will come out as top dog in the VR realm and do well with Morpheus or they will lose a ton of money as the VR craze dies before it truly begins.
