NEO Scavenger [$1 Sale! STEAM] Post Apocalyptic Turn Based Survival Sim

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Every update is like Christmas to me. You all should get on that bundle, this game is amazing.

I havent checked it out in ages. Anything big that was added in the past 2-3 months?

I havent checked it out in ages. Anything big that was added in the past 2-3 months?

Some stuff from the recent updates
Added new major encounter/location in wilderness.
Added new faction with wandering creatures.
Added new faction equipment.
Added new hex art for Allegan, Isotope Mine, Zom Zom's, and Strange Forest.
Added encounter illustration by Max Antonov for Haggerty Health Clinic.
Added combat ability DMC guards to summon sniper.
Added crawl towards and away moves, for when AI is crippled and fallen, and tends to choose passive when it shouldn't.
Added code to anger AI if player is ignoring talk and ceasefire offers.
Added DMC Guard faction to game. Guards patrol around DMC sprawl, slightly favorable to player, and attack any hostiles and monsters. Carry special equipment.
Added armor to the game. New armor items added, and old clothing items now have armor values.
Added new clothing types and a firearm to game.
Added non-hostile NPCs to game. Some NPCs will ignore player, and even fight against common foes.
Added factions and reputations to game. Creatures will remember good and bad experiences with other creatures, and will share this info with any allies they meet.
Added ability to talk with wandering NPCs. Each has default greetings, and some have multiple conversations.
Added ability to offer ceasefire to enemy at the penalty of one extra move. Can also accept enemy ceasefire.
Added ability to right-click a creature in the same hex to re-engage after talks/ceasefire exits battle.
Added crippling effects to arms and legs for severe cut damage.
Added item damage when wound slots hit.
Added Project Zomboid button to title screen.
Added ability to ditch vehicle in combat.
Changed NPC names to be "Stranger" unless they attack or talk to player.
Changed creature names to show "Leader" if that creature is followed by others nearby.
Changed creature sprites on map to show what they are wearing and holding.
Changed raiders and bandits to Bad Muthas and Blue Frogs gangs, to better match lore.
Yes, a lot of stuff. I'd say some of it is even game-changing (non-hostile NPCs, NPCs marked neutral until the players knows if they're hostile or not, factions, reputations, etc.)

You guys beat me to it!

And thanks for catching Toma up, More_Badass! Indeed, I'll try to keep each new build interesting! (Or at least put out the blazing fires from bugs) :)

Toma dropping in to the Steam thread at the very least sold a $1 tier for this game. I've got almost everything in the weekly humble sale already so I was going to pass, but this looks pretty cool and I'd never seen anything about it before.

hello there, i'll play and post impressions when i can. thanks for your generosity.

Super unrelated, but TesserAct is also the name of a neat 3D puzzle game that I played the alpha of a few days ago and is currently in development:

I'd want to know about Toma-related gaming news, so I figured I might as well let you know :p

Hey Toma!

I haven't been able to drop by the Indie thread lately, so this one flew under my radar. I've played the other games in the bundle, so I'm on the fence about picking up the bundle.

If the offer is still good, I'd like to check NEO Scavenger out and post some impressions in both threads.

Either way, as always thanks for raising awareness for games like these!

Hopefully someone here can answer this for me:

Is there an actual storyline to this? As in, is there a single-player campaign? Or is it just a sandboxy-survival mode game? I'd like to get it, but I think i'm a little burnt out with "survive as long as you can" games for now.

There is, but it's also one of the more incomplete parts of the game at the moment. I'm trying to set it up such that the player follows clues in a non-linear way, and there isn't much hand-holding or guidance. I'm hoping that players can "finish" the story with different answers and interpretations of the events, depending on their choices.

However, I know I won't be able to compete with the likes of, say, Fallout 1/2, Arcanum, and similar. It's just me :)

So I guess the TL;DR is: there is story to follow, it's unfinished, and much of the game is sandbox/emergent story to fill in the gaps.

As the dev said, there's a story, but I've found just being the world creates stories of your own. The way all the systems come together and how combat is set up, it feels like you're dropped into the middle of The Road and barely surviving
The raiders left you with nothing, nothing but the ragged clothes on your back and a glass shard. It had been foolish to rest in such an exposed location but the desperate search for shelter from the freezing rain had trumped your nagging exhaustion. And now your mistake had cost you dearly. Another night, another restless sleep in the rain. Hypothermia is a given now. Have to find shelter, real shelter, and supplies...or else death would be coming for you sooner rather than later.
Movement. A lone bandit in the distance. You hurriedly cover your tracks and hide. From your vantage point, you can see the rusted crowbar, the patchwork hide clothing, the backpack. Supplies, warm attire, weapons. The opportunity is too good to pass up.
It's hard to explain. Just traveling and surviving in the game creates this satisfying emergent narrative

alright, cool.

Is it easy to get into? From the youtube video on humble, it seemed like there might be a bit of a learning curve to it.

It's not an easy game. You will die a lot. But it's not unfair. Rather it's just very realistic. If it's raining and it's cold and you go to sleep outside, you're probably die from hypothermia. You can die from an untreated cut that gets infected.

Did somebody say freeeeee...?

If you are interested in trying it and writing some impressions here (good or bad) instead of only having it rot in your backlog, then we have a deal ;)

Looks awesome. I'm assuming buying from the dev will net him more money than buying off of Steam?

It will! Though, I won't be upset if you go the bundle route. The open source tools it benefits are a large part of the reason I could build NEO Scavenger in the first place!

Does the Humble Bundle with this offer individual keys or are they grouped into one?

Separate, I believe.

Thanks, guys!

Ah screw it, I picked up the Yukon Edition instead, this game has been on my wish-list for far too long, it is finally time to try it out.

So awesome of the dev to give out free keys. I decided to buy though. :) Tried the demo on the site and I really love the unique gameplay concept. :D

Dont worry, thats pretty much everyones first impression of the game.

You go out, cant find anything and die. Then you start finding out about using cardboards to carry stuff, or even small carts, figure out how the food system works... and then die because you were too noisy in a city.

Maybe someone else will have some other hints for you, but dont give up. Its really just a matter of understanding how to do things and what to look out for.

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone have an extra key for Offspring Fling from this deal? I'd love to take it off your hands.
