You're in charge of your favourite series, but you have to reboot it. Results?

It's finally happened. After years of brown-nosing, boot-licking and hard work, you've gotten high enough in *insert company here* to make executive decisions about your favorite franchise. You've used this time to make the dream sequel everybody's been waiting for, as well as a few good spinoffs. They've all been moderately successful, making the top 20 releases in their debut month.

But, the company is unsatisfied. They see "dat cod money" as well as the revenue from IAP laden apps and decide that they want to strive for those numbers. Not in the exact way, of course. They aren't going to throw away the integrity of the series they keep just to earn a quick buck. (As you can tell, this is a fictitious example.) But changes do need to be made with these series to make them sell more. Maybe to attract new audiences? Maybe to reclaim lost fans that have "moved on"? Who knows. The thing is though, you are still in charge of your chosen series, so you have to lead the revival project.

So the question stands: If you had complete control over your favorite series, but you had to reboot it (Either gameplay or aesthetic wise), what would be the results?

I really don't think I am (even hypothetically) capable of rebooting a game I love haha. I wouldn't want to touch it.

I'd reboot Metal Gear Solid, but take away the goofy.
No mind-reading ghosties, no soldier dysentry at least once per game and no fan-service cleavage shots left right and centre, no boss fights against vampires or men made out of wasps.
Excellent game play, so other than finicky controls I don't think that would need changing, but the goofiness is really off-putting.

Before some of you guys catch fire - Just my opinion.

This is a really cool idea for a thread.

I think I'd turn Halo into a Metroid Prime-style 'FPA'. You could harken back to the original game, with the feeling of touching down on a mysterious alien planet, and be left to piece together where you are in a large environment. I'm sort of imagining landing, seeing a big forerunner thing in the distance, and working out a way to get to it. The whole 'messages from a dead civilisation' theme is already kind of similar between both games, and I think Halo's sandboxxy sort of gameplay would be a cool fit for a more open-ended sort of game.

Well in this case the dev would be SE, so, lol.

The Last of Us doesn't need a reboot atm so I guess I'll go with Splinter Cell which is due for a reboot. The daughter stuff makes the game seem so old and doesn't fit with the younger looking new Sam Fisher.

Stealth is the only focus. The co-op stays the same. The multiplayer mechanics are thrown out and replaced with Chaos Theory with 1080p pretty graphics. All future Splinter Cells use the same engine for multiplayer with new maps. Two maps (the Museum and Warehouse) are in every game and can be played across all iterations of the game together.

Mark and execute is removed from the single-player campaign (but kept for the co-op). Sam now has Old Snake's auto-camo for daytime missions. Assault is not an option. Non-silenced weapons are not an option. Story becomes a major focus and Sam is given a deep backstory.

My favorite series is Myst and when rebooting I would be sneaky bastard and say "nah, we can't chase after CoD, let's chase after Minecraft" and just add MP mode where people could play as D'ni writting their own books and thus creating new world.

And then I would add traditional SP to it :)

If I had to reboot Final Fantasy, it wouldn't so hard as we already have the proper "framework" of how to make a good FF game. I would just try to minimize the stereotypes a little and treat female characters with a bit more depth than being damsels or just fulfilling a certain one-dimensional archetype.

But if I had to reboot my childhood favorite series, Sonic the Hedgehog. Wow, that would be a challenge.

Well, first of all, I wouldn't put scarfs or bandages on him. I would leave the character design largely untouched from Sonic 2006, since I feel the design he had there was appropriate.

Ideally I would like to create a world in which not only could Sonic have enough space to manoeuvre and achieve high speeds, but also allow for diversity when you play with another character. I think I would make slightly linear levels but with various branching paths that can only be reached by specific characters.

Example: make ledges that are too high for other characters to reach but Sonic can if he dashes at very high speed up the wall. Knuckes can only climb on some surfaces but glides much longer and falls slower than before, giving him a bit of vertical reach but also horizontal reach. Tails would be exclusive a co-operative character and would allow Sonic to reach some of the areas that only Knuckles could. Not only would that give an incentive for players to play co-operatively but also give players who go through the game in single-player motivation to visit the same level with Knuckles.

No Amy. No Shadow. No Silver. No Rouge. No Big the Cat. Etc. Those types of characters were either clones of the heroes, or added very mediocre and poorly baked game mechanics to an otherwise ok and fun 3D platforming game. They were a waste of resources that could have been used for a more polished product.

I would remove the homing attack and multiple-hit enemies and reduce enemy encounters significantly. The original Sonic games always were more about momentum and platforming than speed and combat, but the later games seem to be more focused on those two aspects.

How would I solve the 3D issue for tracking enemies? The same way the 3D Mario games did, with solid gameplay instead of gimmicks. I'd iterate dozens of times until Sonic's gameplay felt right, though I think that for starters I'd use Lost World.

Speaking of Lost Word, I would borrow the wall-running/parkou mechanic from Lost World and would create specific side-paths in levels that would allow for more skilled play.

There would also be slower-paced levels with more than just arbitrary obstacles like the icicle-jumping or jungle ropes in most of the 3D games. Think more Marble Zone, Tomb Raider-esque (the classic ones) temples with challenging platforming and traps, yet that require careful platforming.

There would also be hub-worlds for each area, think of Mario 64 open-world levels with small quests, collectibles and objectives that would have fun things for players to just mess around with. Think Bob-omb battlefield from Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie's hubs.

I think that's about it... the final idea would be to create a game that not only appealed to Sonic fans but also some of the fans that miss the type of experience that Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64. If the gameplay was solid and the level design was good, I think it could be quite successful, selling a million or perhaps more copies.

Me, i'd reboot Halo. I don't think most would like my vision though.
Gameplay-wise, i'd keep a lot of classic Halo elements, add some stuff like vaulting, grabbing, sliding. I'd probably keep sprint, for single player at least (for multiplayer it causes various problems with otherwise classic Halo gameplay, so i'd probably remove it from there, though this could be problematic for sliding and other tricks). Ultimately no big changes, and many things would be closer to older Halos actually. No ADS, that's for a Halo spin-off where you play as a Marine/ODST/any other non-Spartan.
Bigger changes would be on the story and atmospheric side. Deconstructive in nature, dark and foreboding. Stronger narration, like Halo 2 had, alien PoVs and probably an alien player character too. No mute/near-mute flat player character like the Master Chief is but rather someone with personality. And perhaps stronger focus on exploration, alien locales. Also blood and gore, just for sake of having them (and partially realism, emptying a high-caliber assault rifle, like Halo has, magazine on anyone will leave a mess).
(Just for the sake of experimenting, i'm, actually fine with the current story-direction and aesthetics Halo has)
EDIT and since it is a complete reboot, with new timeline and all, i might make heavy visual overhauling too (vehicles, weapons, aliens, MJOLNIR...). Not sure about the last one though.

Chrono Trigger, a fresh coat of paint, some voice acting, really jazz it up for the next-gen. Then at the very end of the game, put in an ending that completely redacts Chrono Cross. Mission accomplished.

World of Warcraft.

I would bring it back to its roots and remove anything that brought convenience and remove anything that destroyed the community aspects.

I would remove:
- flying mounts
- crossrealm dungeons
- crossrealm raids
- looking for raid
- crossrealm battleground
- queueing for anything
- heroic modes

This means you can't have any dead realms, but that problem should be number one on the priority list anyway.

Zelda.

You'd end up with HD Twilight Princess-esque graphics and combat that takes cues from Dark Souls (in that it's weighty and tense, and dying means something).

Imagine it... Dark Souls + Puzzles. Oh yeah.

So pretty much BF2/2142.

New ActRaiser got made for 3DS and Vita. The sim elements would get greatly expanded on, with more types of buildings, unit training, as well as more terraforming and strategy. This mode can benefit heavily from the touch screen interaction. Objectives in the Sim mode would result in the removing or roadblocks in the action stages. These action stages would consist of small Igavania-like worlds, that you need to pop in and out of. Yuzo Koshiro reprises his role as the composer and somehow turns the game's score into his magnum opus.

In spite of the positive domestic reception, Square-Enix does not have a lot of faith in the product, and decides against a western localisation. Instead they decide to make a CG movie about Lightning, and market it with Lightning-themed beverages.

Back in vanilla and TBC you just had one mode. A hard one. That way it actually meant something if you were there when a certain lore figure died. Now you can kill a lore figure while being on /follow in LFR or even normal mode.

I would much prefer the game to be hard, even if it means I currently wouldn't even kill those bosses, since I'm more of a casual player these days. I would like prestige to return to raiding in general.

Oh I get you now. I agree, but you could also argue that people just got more savvy about the game in general. In vanilla nobody really had a clue how anything worked, there was hardly any min-maxing and people didn't have uniform builds and all that stuff so content that wasn't actually that difficult appeared more challenging to everyone because of that. I guess raids got even easier after WotLK? I luckily haven't played past that expansion.

Why get rid of destruction? I think not having destruction takes away the feel of the power of the weapons. You lose something when your tank can't blow up a wooden farmhouse or obliterate someone's hiding spot.

Mega Man. I'd make something completely different, starring a brand new Mega Man. That's how Mega Man reboots usually work.

I'm thinking a 3D game set a thousand years or so after Star Force. The equivalent of Legends for the EXE timeline. In the same way that the Classic timeline eventually went towards the unification of humans and robots, people in this game would be indistinguishable from data / wave-based lifeforms. Other than that, the plot could be whatever - some evil person is trying to take over the world, probably has some fancy artifact to help him, that kind of junk. It's Mega Man, who cares.

As for gameplay, it'd be action-adventure. Something like Kingdom Hearts Re:CoM or BbS, with a customizable deck of subweapons. At the press of a button, your right arm would quickly morph into them, you'd attack, and that weapon card would be consumed. Rather than a cooldown, I think I'd prefer them to reset per encounter or per stage, depending on the game's structure. Of course, you'd acquire more cards whenever you defeat an enemy.
Bosses would give you passive abilities instead, which could add elements to your attacks, increase your speed / power / jump height / etc., buff certain card types, things like that. You could only equip a limited number of passives at once.
And of course you'd also have a normal buster on your left arm. The "charge if not held, rapid-fire if held" buster setup from Star Force is neat, so keep that. I also like that it's a hitscan weapon, rather than real projectiles. The card weapons would generally be real projectiles, however, since they should be harder to use to make up for being more powerful.

There would be much more focus on platforming than KH, and less focus on combos and aerial maneuverability. The speed of the protagonist would be a bit faster than Legends, but not crazy-fast. I do want a dash move and dash-jumps to make platforming cooler, though.
A lock-on mechanic would probably be necessary; if melee weapons were implemented, it'd be neat to see the lock-on-teleport-thing from Star Force applied to 3D.

Edit - oh yeah, system. That's a tough call; I want it on Nintendo platforms because it's Mega Man, and EXE timeline Mega Man at that, but the 3DS might not be the best platform for it and the Wii U is dead. I would like Mega Man to succeed, so maybe PS3/4 is the best choice, but... Ah, whatever. Mega Man will never be popular again anyway. Wii U it is.

Halo becomes Halo again. The masses immortalize me in a monument to my achievement and the Bungie team sheds tears.

I would reboot Soul Calibur.

I would set the series early in time because renaissance is way too goofy, remove all the magic shit, boobies, stupid characters like Pyrrha I AM A GREEK KIDNAPPED CHILDREN THAT ACTS LIKE A STUPID JAPANESE SCHOOLGIRLS and all things that seems way too japanese oriented.
My goal would be : work with japanese designer because they have the eye I need, somehow keep giant swords and weapons, but remake the characters with a simple but charismatic design instead of adding more and more on them like it's a shonen. Find again the dignity and charisma that we all felt when we first touched the series.

The Soul Edge and Soul Calibur would still exists, but never you'll have the full right to use it because they would not be magic swords. It would be much more like excalibur : a normal sword that is the incarnation of your will, be it bad or good. At the end of your journey you find the sword, but it was the journey that made you become what you are, not a sword with bad/good magic inside.

As for the reboot I wouldn't mind a metroidvania type gameplay. Iga left Konami, right?

That just makes too much sense.

I would personally love to work with System Shock. Since it is a very tech heavy game, there are some cool opportunities to make the game novel again.

Megaman Battle Network. It would take even more hours to complete, would feature almost every Net-Navi in the series as an optional playable character (including obscure ones like Serenade), and would have a robust online multiplayer system.

God bless all my old friends/And god bless me too, why pretend?
I would reboot Metroid. Make it less linear, the series has been heading in that direction since fusion. Back to Super Metroid type gameplay but I would also bring in a bunch of scanning too from the prime games.

I'd reboot Mass Effect, taking it back to its RPG origins rather than a cover shooter. I'd create a solar system with several fully explorable worlds like you see in Destiny rather than the galaxy of numerous empty terrains found in the first game.

I'd revamp the gameplay to feel more like a role-playing game than a typical third person shooter, meaning enemies will drop loot and grant EXP to customise and grow your character.

It's time for a Patarevolution. Vita so saved.

Keep the art style and 2D gameplay. Should be able to get some fantastic image quality out of Vita due to the simple art style, and with the OLED it should be an incredibly beautiful games. Return to the focus on armies and not individuals. Further expand the ahead of its time multiplayer of Patapon 3; clans are still a big part of the game, carry mission progress across single and multiplayer, use an entire squad instead of just a hero. Keep the dungeons and RPG aspects of 3, but have every single unit be well-developed and powerful, with as much variety and options per dude as the Uberhero got in Patapon 3. Make the tone goofy again. Bring back the resource minigames, work in the in depth blacksmith of 3. Add uneven terrain. Get rid of random moves from low health bosses. Add a permadeath mode with very high rewards. More songs.

I thought this would be a fun idea but then I read that you want us to take sales into consideration. It seems like the more a franchise changes into the direction of my preference, the less it sells :/

I want a fixed camera, 3D World esque perspective in the next home console Zelda. Aonuma hinted at a multiplayer mode and this is the only way I can realistically see it being done. Ultimately this type of change would lead to a more gamey feel and less immersive, which means a ton of people will be mad.

Souls series:

- Put it more into the future: give it a more industrial/steampunk setting.
- Slow loading/firing flintlock weaponry that does huge damage to unarmored enemies/bosses.
- Make archery viable.
- Make fist weapons viable.
- Fast travel is now tied to an item that can only be used at bonfires.
- Bring back the mana meter. Adjust spell costs accordingly.
- Dedicated PvP arenas.
- Dedicated randomized dungeon for item farming.

and above all else: no despawning enemies!

Oh, so basically it's Tomb Raider 1 again. :)

I'd turn Kingdom Hearts into a turn based rpg.

Keep the platforming and exploration, battles that take place Persona 4 style where you try to hit the enemy on the map first to initiate the turn based combat.

I'd do a hard reboot of Resident Evil.

Ditch all the convoluted continuity and 'characters' and everything.

In designing the game I'd focus on the title (Resident Evil) and make the theme actually relevant to it, rather than the game being Biohazard and just being called RE for the states version. So, it would probably deal with themes of inherent violence and evil in both nature , and people.

Okay, I'd also change up the representation of the titular 'evil' from biohazards and evil corporations, to unexplainable supernatural-like phenomenon and cult activity. Even though this is a big shift for the series, I would definitely keep the core spirit of RE alive and have plenty of homages (that I will get to later).

Tonally the game needs to be scary as hell, and while it would be focused primarily on body horror and tense enemy management, there would also be some disturbing psychological horror. The main character (either a new character, or a rebooted version of Leon) could be kind of a smartass so there could be a little bit of humor, but overall I'd want the game to be serious and have some actual dramatic heft in the writing.

The game would have you travel to a remote mountain town in the United States where you are investigating child disappearances (the reason you can't leave or call in back up with be explained with some cult magic, like when you first arrive you see the town is surrounded by a ring of salt and later you find out that was part of some ritual or something). The scares would ramp up a little slower as members of a mysterious cult led by a prodigal son of a wealthy mansion owner show up, and they start performing rituals on the said disappearing children and bringing creatures into the world as well as changing the townspeople into ganado like freaks. And then you get to explore the town, forest, swamp, fields, and cliffs that make up an open world. I wouldn't want a huge GTA style open world, but rather something that is densely crafted to perfection, and feels manageable to explore but with plenty of secrets and optional scary 'sidequests' you can find.

At the center of the map however there is a big old mansion that a decent chunk of the story is set in (maybe 30%) but that won't unlock all of it. So you can explore the mansion and unlock rooms in between story sections if you want, and find secrets (like pages of some cult book that act as a cool illustrated bestiary), as well as some spooky shit once you unlock the basement or attic. This would basically be a throw-back to RE1. There would also be access to cars and other vehicles to help you travel, but those can get mobbed by enemies (imagine driving in a lightning storm, only to crash into a tree as a mob of freaky villagers hunt you down).

As you explore the world if you run into enemies you can either avoid them via stealth or take them on with your limited resources (you really have to decide what would be best, and on harder difficulty you would have less resources so you would have to rely more on stealth). Environmental progression would mimic the old RE games in that you slowly 'unlock' more areas of the map, and there will be frequent returns to areas you have already been to but there will be a new twist or scare when you go back.

As for boss fights I'd take a little inspiration from MGS in that there would be quite a bit of them, and a ton of effort would go into them. Like one boss fight could be set inside a house you are locked in against a chainsaw wielding maniac, and another could be against some creepy serpentine corpse-monster in the swamp where it can pull you underwater. And even a boss that can hunt you down throughout the whole world map.

As for controls it would take a little inspiration from The Last of Us but even more fluid, because I'd want combat and stealth to be super dynamic, and chases to be fast paced, fluid, and terrifying. An example of why fluid controls in RE could be awesoem: you're being chased through a little neighborhood area, you just manage to hop a fence to lose your pursuers and you stealth around, only to be jumped by and enemy who you wrestle off you and the horde is on you again so you open fire behind you as you run to the nearest car, or house to blockade yourself into.

There would also be some form of inventory box, and weapons collection (although I'd want the weapons to be more grounded). Also you would be able to pick up melee weapons from the environment (think condemned) because you will be frequently out of ammo.

The year is 2021. Somewhere lost in the heart of the metropolis, a young man walks down a dark alley at night. The storm doesn't give any sign of calming down. You can barely hear the police sirens above the deafening sound of rain. The young man pulls his green hoodie over his head but it's no use, he's soaked to the bones.

He checks his phone. There's no mistake, this is the place. He wanders down the stairway, dimly lit under a couple of flickering light bulbs. The old man is waiting for him.

"Are you sure you want to do this?", asks the old man
The teenager stared at the old man in silence. There was no need for words. The old man sighed, and handed him the gun.

"It's dangerous to go alone. Take this."

Oh god please no

Edit: also, I hate when people do what I just did: assuming everyone gets the reference. So this is Zelda.
