RIP Gamespy master servers May 31 (BF2, Borderlands 1, etc)

I don't see the GS logo at all during the loading screen. Just checked it a few minutes ago.

It appears to use Gamespy on PS3 to store match videos. I'll check tonight to see if the logo is still there or was removed in the patch.

There's no mention anywhere of Gamespy being used for matchmaking.

If the halo 1 pc scene is that strong, someone will hack in either a faux master server that will be run by the community ala tribes, or some other method.

Never thought I'd see the day when the Westwood Online functionality of C&C Renegade would outlive the Gamespy functionality..

I thought Halo 1 on PC had utterly busted netcode anyway?

Last I played it they actually had to have a "ding" sound to let you know that you hit your target.....because the game was just that fucked up and lagged.

I wouldn't worry about Halo CE, most of games happening still are on several clans own dedicated servers, what goes down is the server browser. The game has a direct IP option which you can use instead to connect to whatever server, playing p2p was pretty awful anyway. Battlefield 2 is pretty much same I think.

Lol it looks like it does in fact connect to gamespy servers in some way. "Did not know what the fuck I was talking about" indeed...

Irony is a sweet friend indeed :)

Yet, people are playing online right now.

oop aww

If this affected anything, it means the cloud storage of replays is gone. Which not many people really care about.

So that's why the Nintendo WiFi Connection is going down. Nothing to do with Nintendo pulling the plug early.

I got people on the PS3 end sayinjg they don't see the GS Splash logo as well on PS3.

So, again, I'm /pretty damn sure./ OE doesn't use GS.

If dedicated servers can still be hosted could someone make a webpage with server IP Addresses? Do we know which games do not have dedicated servers?

Sad news :(

Shit, I think you're right. Nintendo WFC was partially based on Gamespy, so they couldn't keep those games online any more even if they wanted to since nearly all of them are too old to patch.

This is all Glu and IGN's fault. (The former for the actual shutdown, the latter for selling Gamespy to them.)

All you're doing is hopefully speculating to the contrary of the evidence posted

More speculation. Again, if you want to post something contrary to my original post that GGPO is networking tech rather than actual server hosting then do so. Otherwise, nothing you are posting is more than useless speculation at best or driveby crap at worst.

Real damn shame that pretty much everything that came before Steamworks became popular used Gamespy, now we get to deal with the pleasure of pretty much everything being shut down until someone can come up with a new master-server.

Between this and GFWL shutting down, I think we need to start demanding that games support some sort of fallback if their master servers go down. You can still play Quake 1 online, but games that are just a couple years old are going to be unplayable.

Ok, ok, so all these console games using GameSpy sound like PS3 versions, which makes sense because Sony doesn't provide a matchmaking infrastructure like MS does, I guess.

Sucks for those games, for sure.

Sure worked well for halo 2.

For saints row 2:

It's pretty unlikely that we will be patching our older games like SR2 that use Gamespy, but we haven't actually announced anything yet either way. The good news is that you should still be able to use the LAN option for SR2 coop with apps like Hamachi or Tunngle to connect to your friend.

Hamachi makes it so you can connect to people that aren't in your real LAN right? I never used it.

At least there's still that.

Wait, MK9's online'll be dead? I know it's not great as it is, but it's less than a year old on PC.

It's already dead. I tried to play the other day and there was four people playing online.

Still absurd that a game I bought last August won't even work online anymore if I wanted to play with a friend. I'd ask WB and Boon to fix it but they don't give a shit about PC and never even patched it to begin with. Last time I buy a fighting game on PC for sure. Pathetic support all around.

No Battlefront 2? No Halo:CE? This is a big loss.

Does anyone think it is feasible for fans to run their own matchmaking servers similar to the way someone can run a private MMO server? I'm not sure if they are at all similar, just curious...
