So Dark Souls II [PC] is launching in less then a month and there's no footage of it.

Whether you want to avoid engaging in a game of ad hominem or not, you've already painted yourself in a certain light with a few users or a big part of the community at large. My post was only to notify posters of your history. If I wanted to create an ad hominem attack I'd make it blatant and obvious. Not only that but I would've directed it to you. Not notifying an audience.

This is great stuff. Someone should draw up a list of GAF "Wanted" posters with "notorious" individuals and their poster habits to supplement this sort of ridiculous internet tribalism drama.

So a game that uses cell shading, for example, is it automatically worse because it eschews extra detail? Or one that uses an even more abstract patterns: a wire frame game like Rez. I understand that most games are in some ways trying to look "realistic" but they are also blending that with stylistic choices and on top of all of that are limited by the teams resources and capabilities. Taking all those things into account and then reducing it to a conversation about how games should look a certain year seems incredibly overly simplistic to me. That has been my point the entire conversation. I'm not just trying to be a gadfly.

Eternal Sonata looks technically better than Dark Souls II. It also runs technically better.

They probably won't uncap the framerate, but that isn't a problem because there are told to cap games on PC.

Didn't they already state publically some time ago that the PC version would run at 60fps and not just 30fps? It's not uncapped but the next best thing.

Is it limited to 1080p and 60FPS? Because I would like a 1440p option since that's my native res, and preferably 120hz support since my monitor can also do that, though 60hz is still fine.

In what way are you using the words "technically" and "better." I'm not trying to be coy here, I really have no idea what the criteria is. You definitely aren't using the word "technically" in it's traditional sense.

Granted Eternal Sonata has a fixed camera angle but the textures are much more clear and exhibit a sense of uncompressed texture-levels of detail. Not only that but the lighting is very distinct and the shadows are well represented. Dark Souls II looks like a hackneyed job at trying to show some level of graphical finesse when it doesn't.

I don't think anybody knows. The only info that seems to have come out is the one poster he said he had a friend saw the graphics options and indicated that they contained the option for 60fps and 1080p and settings for texture, shadows, AO, anisotropic filtering, depth of field, etc.

It would be nice if we could get an anonymous screen shot of the graphics setting menu but I'm guessing we won't have to wait long since the Giant Bomb guys indicated they were doing something with the PC version next week.

I've said this before but they most likely couldn't meet the deadline in optimizing the ps3/360 versions of the game and as a result and had to take step back sort of downgrading the game sort of late into the game. It's also why the game feels like a technical slop sometimes.

This is the downside of releasing so late in the generation. I'm willing to bet the game needed a delay but Namco thought it would be too outdated after a while and pushed for March.

That makes a good deal of sense actually. Especially for an enthusiast driven game like Dark Souls. I don't think the new CoD will have that kind of problem because that audience doesn't move on to other platforms as quickly and definitively as the enthusiast crowd. Hell, Assassin's Creed is doubling down and releasing entirely separate games for the last gen machines. But a game like Dark Souls with a more limited audience probably has a lot more pressure to get out sooner rather than later near the system's life cycle end.

But on the other side of the coin, Persona 5 next year on PS3. And in fact in the past hasn't there been a solid trend of more quirky, cult popular stuff releasing late in console's life spans? It seems a game like Dark Souls is perhaps the perfect victim of being caught between these two situitions though: it is too big to be a niche title and too small to be mainstream enough to whether the enthusiast switch to new platforms.

Jesus, what monitor is that? I have never heard of a 1440p/120hz monitor

No, I know that you are taking for granted a bunch of terminology about latest tech and it's relationship to how games do/should look. In that sense, yes, I know where you are coming from. You are coming from decades of ingrained videogame marketing bullshit about "better graphics." I just thought we were past that at this point. After all that view is so 2008 and it's 2014.
No man. Graphics constantly improving isn't marketing bullshit.

...I am now. I could've sworn I clicked that when I first signed up AND have been receiving newsletters for ages now.

Wow that's a total bummer, same thing happened to me.

I've been getting newsletters from them for a while now. I checked the settings and the toggle there says I'm not subscribed. I've bought tons of things from then before, and when I enabled the toggle it said my account wasn't activated either, even though you need an activated account to make purchases.

That seems like a bug on their part and it's a total bummer I'm missing out on a code as a result.

But with the PC version, you have the agency to improve the visuals if you desire. Generally, through tweaking expansive settings (which they offer) and resolutions and if needed SweetFx etc etc, you are able to make a good looking game look great. And I think until we get hands on with it and tweak all the variables possible to see how great we can get the game to look to try and meet our standards, it's tough to say "The game is just not pretty."

I agree, as long as they give us a game that scales correctly we will be able to squueze a great looking game out of it.

What setting is gonna replace all those low quality textures?

I believe From said we would be getting higher resolution textures.

I will echo what others have been saying, remember what happened with DS1? Some amazing textures came out once we bumped up the res.

That may be so but it doesn't excuse them for showing a perfectly optimized good looking tech demo running on PS3s at every trade show since E3 with no disclaimers whatsoever about how innacurately they representd the actual game.

That's still in the 'recent updates' on the Steam store:

PC & STEAM version will benefit from PC capabilities with increased texture resolution and an enhanced frame rate option. On top of that, FromSoftware have been working to perfectly adapt the game for a mouse & keyboard combo.

A month of playfire rewards + 25% off coupon ~ $10 ds2

I have no idea if GMG is making money. Definitely not if everyone is in on this scheme of theirs.

I continually swayed between being totally stoked for the sequel to my favourite game of the last few years and being pretty worried at how badly it could turn on on PC. In the end, I just stopped thinking about it and I now assume that no matter what the end result it, it's still going to be a great game.

Souls series FTW.

The GMG stuff can be a bit confusing...I got the 25 % off coupon a couple weeks back...my friend who uses the site didn't. Then he received his a couple days ago...this sort of thing has happened quite a few times in the past where one receives one while the other doesn't.

Any insight into this?

what are the rewards for playfire ?
Have your Steam account linked to a Playfire account and play your backlog during the right time (listed on their blog) to earn a little bit of GMG credit. It's kind of janky but you ultimately get the credits you earned. http://blog.playfire.com/2013/12/playfire-rewards-beta.html

It's kind of crazy. If you buy Goat Simulator with a coupon near launch day and do all the achievements, GMG basically pay for the game + extra in credits.

Is this game worth buying at launch?

Its fantastic.

Doesnot surpass the first game but still in a league of its own.

Also I imagine it will look very good on PC.

If you are a souls fan you don't need to hesitate at all.

Yep, it's a great game that just couldn't reach the 10/10 levels of Dark Souls 1. A lot of improvements made to the formula while also a lot of oversights and things wrong with it, but still ultimately better than just about every other game out there. It's almost a hybrid of Demons and Dark, in a way.

Maybe anyone who has unrealistic expectations for the PC version should just skip it or boycott it? You know... cause they are liars and stuff?

I got a 25% code yesterday, was picking it up anyway, was originally going to grab it with the 20% code so it was just a bonus.

The email does say that the code is applicable only to you.

I have nearly 300 hours in dark souls, I am really just expecting a good version of a fantastic game with the sequel, I don't expect the lighting, just a solid 60fps and higher res textures. That way I won't be gutted.

Quick question to the folks that have played dark souls 2, how does the overall structure feel? dark souls is amazing up until over half way then the second half is not quite as enjoyable for me personally anyway, I still love it.

There's a couple stinker areas in the second half, closer to the end of the game, but it's not like Dark Souls where the first half was in a league of it's own above the second half. Also the game is almost twice as big as Dark or Demons with a lot more optional stuff and a really cool PvE convenant with exclusive bosses.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm doing. I wonder why the expectations are unrealistic though, since FromSoft was fond of advertising this 'unrealistic' expectation multiple times until one to two months before release as if it was the real thing.

i bought RE revelations and Tomb Raider and several games from GMG and didn't get any credit

That's good to hear, Cheers man.

Dude, how about you wait until you've actually seen it?

Just look at Dark Souls 1 and the difference a bump in resolution makes.

And this is with all the goodies DSfix has to offer
Generally speaking, Dark Souls II's texture quality is not comparable to that of the first game's. Some areas are still finely detailed, but don't expect another gap like the .gif you posted just by bumping up the resolution. SweetFX et al isn't going to change this. This isn't limited to the environment either: returning armor sets look worse in Dark Souls II as well.

Visually Dark Souls II is oddly inconsistent. It can be a looker and turn into an ugly mess in quick succession depending on your route.

Except you can't really know that until you see the textures at high resolution, which the console version doesn't have. That is the entire point of the comparison. THat's what Dark Souls 1 textures looked like on consoles before DSfix.

That is so strange as From said they doubled the art team early in development.

I wonder if they bit off more than they could chew with this one. There are numerous inconsistencies between development and release.
