Mario Kart 8 : new trailer

So spinning out in antigrav mode gives a boost, we know that. But can anyone tell if the act of spinning out actually slows you down during the spin at all, counteracting a bit of the boost you get afterwards? Will you be AIMING to hit things, because there's no downside, or does the boost just cancel out the spinout slowdown?

Honestly it doesn't seem it slows you down. And another advantage is that it doesn't cancel drifts.

In the GameXplain video I thought that they said both karts in the collision get a boost (which I thought was weird unless I misheard it) and it did sound like aiming to hit people was a mechanic now.

They specifically mentioned that it changes the way you play since in the past you're always avoiding contact...

unless you're the type that likes to bump people off the track of course.

Wii sucked at this, because bikes were absurdly OP, and unlike snaking it takes no skill to pick a uber fast bike with inward drifting and spam wheelies. There's nothing robotic about snaking, also, and you had to be very good to pull it off non-stop in every track. It was awesome, but I can see why it was removed. Oddly enough, I feel like drifting (if it really can't be like in DS - and it won't) is perfect in Sonic Racing Transformed. Three tiers of boost depending on how long you drift, and you can jump mid-drift in the opposite direction without losing your charge.

Killing your thumbs and everyone choosing the tank and yoshi cart certainly isn't awesome. MKWii was fucking chaotic in general, but MK7 really had the best balancing since 64. Little amount of uber items (iirc it's literally impossible for a race to have more than one lightning), no bikes, proper drifting instead of dumb snaking (plus kart customisation for your drift handling needs) and track knowledge giving you the right advantages.

Well, it wouldn't really make sense any other way I think--how would the game know who caused the collision?

sooo.... will Nintendo push a Demo of this onto our WiiUs after the Direct tomorrow?

I know that demos are more or less dead. even more so for Nintendo.
But I feel Mario Kart 8 is make or break for the WiiU, and they did this for Wii Sports and Wii Fit. And I would say Mario Kart is at least of the same league.

What do you mean "or break"? The shit is toast dude. Been toasted.

And hell no to a demo. This is Nintendo. Not _________ <- any other company

There's a counter in Mario Kart Wii's stats that shows “how many times you bumped other people”, and “how many times other people bumped you”. Basically, each driver has a weight based on the character, the vehicle, the current speed, if it's under the effect of a form of turbo (mini-turbo/mushroom/trick boost etc.); in the end the one who weighs more than the other is the one that bumps the other. The difference determines how much the lighter is pushed back.

So if I understand correctly, I would think that'd be a major imbalance for a new mechanic, where heavier vehicles are the ones who benefit it more than others. (that aside, the footage we've seen doesn't seem to make it look any actual "bumping" is going on as they all just glide past each other).

Wild guess time:

The three remaining new tracks are Rainbow Road, Bowser's Castle and Tropical Freeze... and for the next trailer, they'll show the Tropical Freeze course, and reveal Diddy, Dixie, Cranky and/or Funky. The second half of the trailer will be the new Bowser's Castle, wherein they'll reveal Bowser Jr., Birdo, Dry Bones and Dry Bowser. They'll also show bits of N64 Yoshi Valley and GCN Sherbet Land, and the "Speaker" and "8" items will be detailed.

Oh man, I shouldn't have come in here when the one man hype machine was about, a Tropical Freeze track would be a cool follow up to the DKCR track in the previous game as well as filling the vacant ice stage spot. Adding Dixie Kong would only serve to make my character choices even harder.
Capped off with Lord Fredrik as the "who the hell is that?!" final character similar in the vein of the Honey Bee Queen.

Speaking of DK tracks I just spied the Tiki Tribes hot air balloon in the MK8 version of the track, I don't recall that being there in the 3DS game.

Can we push back at Nintendo on the voice chat? Iwata says he wants to show the viability of the gamepad, and he's wasting a feature of it. Even a post release patch would work, as long as they recognize that they can't be wishy washy with having modern features if they at all want any future business.

You can see both karts getting a boost in every footage of it.

Not it running poorly during 4p. Thank goodness I have no need for that mode.

What runs poorly in this video? I don't see noticeable slowdowns (then, it's off-screen footage instead of direct feed); it looks like it will be locked 30fps like in Mario Kart Wii, which is reasonable for a 4-player splitscreen setup.

A guy from MKWF found something really interesting...
Apparently (at least in this demo) there can be two Bullet Bill at the same time..

I think it's time we all TAKE ACTION

We need to get together and kidnap Iwata, Miyamoto and Reggie and demand that Nintendo release Mario Kart 8 early or we'll send them back to Nintendo a piece at a time. This thread is driving me mental, I WANT TO PLAY IT NAO!!!!

And then we get arrested before we can play it.

Your plan is terrible.

Well we'll obviously all be wearing Shy Guy masks and will need to resist playing online until launch day but we can definitely get away with it. We could even go around each other's houses and play local multiplayer. It's a great plan. Foolproof!!!
