Destiny Character Customisation Video from GDC

Whoa, a full hour long? I have just enough time to watch this before work. :)

Some new footage in the middle section and lots of information on how they have made a modular system to enable the artists to create a large amount of content, with lots of variety, in a short space of time. Pretty cool.

Haven't watched the video yet, but I assume another benefit of using a modular system is the amount of memory it saves - which should allow for even more content. :)

Bah, four basic slots plus a small specialty slot for each class ain't exactly deep customization, even if there are a good variety of items.

And since it's loot based, it will end up being a random indistinctive set of items that sort of go together, without a whole lot of actual personalization. I won't know Bob's style from Johanna's, because they both look as vague as the other.

It suits the world, I suppose, but it's not great for actually making your character stand out as your own distinct creation.

Yup, he ends up talking about that about halfway through.

God I've done a ton of presentations in front of completely bored students but spending so much time on a one hour GDC talk only to have a handful of people show up has to be a litle discouraging.

I have watched every video of Destiny, and I'm still failing to get excited for it.

Really will depend on the beta.

Yep same for me. Did Bungie rely to much on their big name as the "halo creators" ?

I think they should show off some more stuff and make better pr or vidocs...

At the very least I suppose he can take solace in that a fair share will see it online.

They specify that it's not random, but an artist arranges the modular items themselves to create unique content.

There is no reason why having a modular system of this type would not allow you to create content that stands out. Have a look at some of the characters in the video. They all look distinctive enough.

I would say that is part of the problem... outside of E3, we haven't seen new gameplay. Not much to get excited about outside of proof of concept.

I would like to see them address more on the social/online aspects of the game (as we know it will have Co-op and competitive multiplayer)

I agree, there has been too much selling on the idea of Destiny but not much gameplay footage backing it up. And at this rate we won't get that until E3 or the beta.

The beta is happening soon.

I think for most people, including myself, to really understand what this game is and how it's structured, we need a 30 minute long gameplay video showing what kinds of activities you can engage in and how you travel around and between locations.

What a fascinating talk. I'm just marveling at all of these internal tools made in the name of efficiency.

Completely agree, hell at this point we still don't have a clear idea of how the MMO aspects of the game really work.

Characters that you can customize can be very costly thing in terms of money and hardware resources. The ways I have tested that worked for me is having all the customizable parts of the model stored in the same file for the model. Another way is to have the parts of the body separate from each other. Both of these ways ate up memory for me since I was loading all the customization options into memory. Bungie has guys way more experienced than me though so they bound to be using a far more advanced solution.

When loading is fast enough to the point where loading isn't noticeable you won't need any tricks.

Note that I haven't watched the vid, just read the thread.

Is somebody willing to write a summary of how deep the customization is and what it entails? Customization for me is massively important in games like these and I've been watching trailers/videos for this in hopes they would discuss it, but watching that whole video for the info might be a bit too much.

For me the classes have too rigid a design. Customising the look of your character isn't going to have the same scope if every member of a class has the same silhouette. It seems your choice of race has little impact on appearance or gameplay as well.

I'm interested in Destiny, no doubt some light will be shed at E3

Wait, what?! We have faces in this game? And different races? Man, I had no idea. It really goes to show how little we really know/understand about Destiny. Excited for a true in depth look at how cohesive the solar system is, and what the story is like.

I second this.

I think readability is very important in games. It sucks that you can't do whatever you like, from an individual perspective but when talking about how things should fit in a gameplay system I think the need to able to tell what kind of class you are supersedes the need to express oneself.

An example from the MMORPG world: DAoC vs. Guild Wars 2. In the former you always knew what kind of limits the races had. Lurikeen could not be constitution or strength monsters. In GW2 anything goes, and I think that screws not just with the gameplay and your expectations but also with the fiction. (Fantasy that portrays itself as based on (fantasy) earth, should follow earth's physics. ;-))

Not that deep.

5 slots

Head
Torso
Arms
Legs
Class Special Slot (Cloak for Hunters, Sash for Warlocks, Armband for Titans)

Everything will fit together nice and snugly, but you won't be able to look radically different than any other goon of your class. And I believe they said that gear is also tied to stats, so boo on you if you liked that Extra Weaksauce Lvl 3. Helmet

This game is starting to be one of my most wanted games of the yesr after the order. Seems like ill be playing this for hours on end.

It seems like the game will definitely require a solid dye system that the players can utilize to really stand out. It would be nice if they had an aesthetic system that would allow players to maintain the look of a certain piece of gear even after they upgrade to a different piece though. It seems this presentation was focused more on the design process however, so even if such a system were to exist, it may not necessarily be covered during a presentation like this one.

-Was hoping to see some race and face customization, but whatever.
-So they're using a color unifying system like SWTOR?
-The shot of the hunter running through the snow in the gameplay footage pretty much confirms Europa as a playable world.
