Disney’s Frozen [OT] – They Pulled Another Tangled!

So I finally saw this. It's a weird mix for me, I love a ton about it, but there was an undercurrent of little plot and characterization things that made it feel kinda weird.

Let me say first though that the level of human expression in these girls' faces was goddamned astonishing. And boyeeee let me crank up the creep-o meter and go on record as citing these as the most attractive CG women I've ever seen. The realistic facial animation goes a long way towards solidifying that impression.

Some of the songs I had issues with, but others were really amazing, and Idina Menzel makes me shit bricks with some of the strength she brings to them. I was pleasantly surprised with Olaf, too. He looked really irritating in previews but his actual characterization when not just compiled into 4-second cuts that destroy all comedic timing was actually pretty charming.

But alright so I'm just gonna list a bunch of things here and see if they end up tying together into a coherent criticism.

Elsa's parents, once Anna had her memory altered, were embarrassingly idiotic. "We'll lock her away, keep it all hush hush, no exposure, teach her to be afraid and ashamed." There's no dissent from the trolls, no indication whatsoever that this course of action wouldn't be good for her. Her father immediately says all of this, and it just felt extremely unbelievable to me. How he could say it with a straight face, "I am setting up the plot with my bad decisions."

I didn't like "love is an open door" because it really bothered me that they so nonchalantly threw the word "love" around in that song after not actually having any tangible romantic interaction up until then. I know the whole thing is that Anna is being super impulsive and moving on this guy way too fast but I needed their brief relationship to hit a boiling point that it never did, and then the song felt like it came out of nowhere. A song about how this guy is really great, how he's opening your eyes up to this and that, all fine and great but it's just that word Love in there that ruins it thematically for me, and makes it extremely unbelievable. The song can BUILD to that at the end maybe, they realize it by singing the song or something, but right in the first chorus? I don't think so.

Let it go is a pretty amazing song, but it also felt like it came out of nowhere and made no real sense. The only real sense we have from Elsa in the film up until then is that she hates her power, she's afraid of it, she's terrified of hurting people, of anyone finding out about it. Her fleeing the kingdom is consistent with this. Her suddenly deciding "wow this is great I can do whatever I want now awwww yeah power times look at this bitchin castle I am the best" feels thematically dissonant. She's run out into the wilderness, chased out by her people, she should be mortified, "oh god what have I done." Instead she does a bizarre heel turn and now she loves her powers. I'd be okay with this if it was at all foreshadowed. Give brief little cuts earlier in the movie where she still uses her powers willingly, but in private. Where it seems like she wants to be herself, but is forced to repress it. The song is empowering but makes very little sense after what just happened to her, her sudden isolation from her sister and kingdom. If they made it seem like she wanted to get away from the kingdom, like she felt trapped there against her will, like she was being repressed by her family and her responsibility, even that would've set it up. But again, I got no sense of any of that.

"True love's kiss." I get that it's a disney reference but I groaned internally at every mention. That the first thing everyone in the movie jumps to is "oh it's obviously gotta be a kiss, cause this is a Disney movie." I'm glad it turned out NOT to be one, but still.

I think the troll song was a little too on the nose. I liked how that relationship was growing organically, the "lol marry him" song put it way too far out in the forefront I think.

The prince becoming evil. It felt like it really didn't accomplish much of anything. I expected him to kiss her and it didn't work cause it wasn't true love, it was impetuous young lust. Instead oops he was evil. It didn't really impact the plot at all, is the real issue. He tried to hit Elsa with a sword, and Anna blocked it, that was literally it. They could've easily put that situation together with some other kind of danger, Evil Prince just felt forced.

This isn't really a huge criticism but I kinda wish the movie's resolution involved Anna having Summer powers that counteracted Elsa's Winter powers. So that the sisters balanced each other out, so that their isolation is what caused the problems, that by being together they would've become whole. Elsa feeling "love" felt pretty lame, it's not like she never loved, she loved Anna plenty. It was just ruined by fear is all.

Overall I think the plot itself was pretty sound, it's just certain details about the events, and the way those events just happen without proper foreshadowing or characterization, that bugs me. This is a big post full of complaints but I really did like the film, I just feel like there was a wasted opportunity for Disney to look back on the film as a whole, identify these missing bits, and fill them in to make the whole thing a million times more believable. A little more context here and there, and it would've been outstanding.

I think some of those points you mentioned were strengths in my eyes. So many disney movies (and movies in general) fall into the idea of "find a prince charming" she thinks she found this stud of a man who is actually a prince. Plus she was locked away so she really has no idea what love is and is desperate. I know quiet a few girls who meet a guy and overlook flaws because they just want to be in a relationship.

As for true loves kiss it was a nice little twist. You expected that to be the saving gesture but the kiss never had anything to do with saving Anna in the end.

I felt some of your points when I first watched the movie but when I went back to thinking about it many of them seemed intentional.

Well I finally got the Blu Ray and watched it for the first time last night.

I really liked it. The characters were great. The music was a bit poppy but I still enjoyed it.
I loved at the end that it was the love from her sister that broke it. That was really nice.

I didn't understand the point of taking away Anna's memories at the beginning or how locking up Elsa in a room would help her control her powers. Send her to Xavier's School for Gifted Children, that has a proven success rate.

I really enjoyed, Love is an Open door and I am grateful, truly grateful, that I can now watch all of those parody songs on Youtube with some context now.

Solid Film, Will watch again.

The beginning was splendid. Loved the build up and the introduction of the sisters and how it fell apart after the accident. that first time she ask if she wants to build a snow man was so sad. let it go is worth the hype i have to admit. listened to the different versions now and i have to agree that i actually like the german version the most. movie was alright.

For the love of all things holy take that song out of my head!

I have watched the "Let it go" sequence for 5 days straight, at least once a day, LOL. Fucking awesome, dude!
Entertaining movie, I liked it, although it didn't feel too tight past the 2nd half.

Seeing you guys loving the movie just makes me want the bluray more. I'm still waiting for the 3D combo pack, April 3rd can't come faster!

Come on!

So I finally got some spare time to watch the Special Features on the Blu Ray. I had been looking forward to these and so I popped on "The Making of Frozen"

The camera pans down to these two guys and they start singing and I'm like.... "Yeah, OK, I can dig this."
So then they start singing and dancing and even more people come in and everyone is dancing around and I'm like...... "Yeah, this is a cool little intro. This is cool."
And then it goes for another two minutes and I'm like..... "Ok, they're not really telling me anything, they're just repeating, 'How did we make, how did we make, how did we make Frozen?' Which whilst catchy, I feel like they could have stopped doing that a minute ago and gone on with what I am sure will be a 60-90 minute feature."
And then more dancers came on and they cranked it up to eleven eventually ending in the movie theatre where I am sure they will cut across to the screen to begin the actual Making of Frozen. Then they all sing "How did we make Frozen? We don't know." And they all start to leave.

At this point I still have hope. It could be a fake out? I wouldn't put it past them after all they wouldn't put a three minute video of these people singing and dancing about Making Frozen and not actually do anything. Right? That would be cruel. So I'm a little bit anxious, "But surely," I reason, " One of them will say, ' We don't know how they made it. Then why don't we find out?' Surely that will happen! And then the feature will begin!"
Cue the slow and gradual fade to black.

My heart lay broken on the floor.
Shattered into shards of ice
My heart lies still forever more.

Disney must you hurt me so?
Why do you enjoy my pain?
I want to know how you Let it Go
To your head, is this some game?

And then silently I shut it down.
The tv lay dark with sights no more.
I closed the blinds without a sound
And silently, I shut the door.

Saw it last night, thought it was fantastic. The animation captures the Disney feel in 3D, the story avoids many clichés of the genre which is refreshing, and the songs are catchy as hell - you can definitely picture it being produced as a Broadway musical if they could do justice to Elsa's ice powers on stage.

I really loved the first third of the film, where Elsa struggles to conceal her powers to keep Anna safe but has to force her away is done really well. Yeah it's a basic dramatic irony and it's a Disney film so it's quite obvious, but the heightened nature of it only helped to bring out the emotion and conflict, especially when we haven't know these characters for very long.

Also, Sven posing next to the new sled like a model was priceless.

"Disney magic" sounds like such a tired phrase but there's no better way to say how much I enjoyed it.

I'm pretty sure Disney even posted that clip on YouTube. I thought it was just supposed to be a teaser to try and get people to buy the movie to get the rest. Apparently not...

Watched this on Bluray last night with my partner (she is a huge Disney fan). What an awesome movie it was, the best one since Lion King (although after seeing the Frog and Princess it's not that hard).

Everything was superb except.... Olef the Snowman. He was ace but thought he was dumbed down a bit much in some scenes, but still a great character

So deserved! Disney....the king of animation once again. **wipes away tear**
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah so true! :D

ALSO ITS HERE EVERYONE ITS HERE !!!! :D:D:D

A week or so ago, my cousin was visiting for the afternoon (she's about 5 or 6 years old, I think). After lunch, I asked her if she wanted to watch my newly obtained Frozen blu-ray, assuming she probably hadn't seen it yet, or only saw it once in theatre.

Without delay, she replied "No".

I was obviously surprised, so her mom, seated nearby, said she's already seen it about 10 times. They saw it once in theatre and then she bought the digital copy and has been watching it almost daily.

Also 'Frozen' is now the most successful animated movie of all time

Just saw this on blu-ray. Best thing Disney's done since the Lion King. Made me want an Olaf plushie.

Then I find out that there's a Disney Movie Rewards deal where if I bought the Frozen blu-ray I get an Olaf plushie for practically free. Score.

For some reason I have always thought Jennifer Lee was Asian and have now realised that she is not.

Edit: Hard to say if this revelation made me feel anything, but probably a little disappointed because i'd thought finally someone who isn't white reached the top in american animation.

Are the power discs included with the toy box sets also in the main disc series or available elsewhere?

I'm specifically wondering about Wreck-It Ralph. My sister purchased her daughter Ralph and Vanellope individually but wants those discs.

Edit: Oops. Sorry. Wrong thread.

Watched it again last night on bluray with my Mom. I think Ive finally slightly tired of it for a while after 7 viewings but its a movie I will definitely return to often.

Just saw it a few days ago. Really, really good film. I liked it much more than Tangled. It's not perfect; the Hans twist was very poorly pulled off and the first third of the film is like Awkward Moments: The Movie, but in general the story, acting, singing and animation is just top-notch.

I wonder if Disney would ever consider doing an animated Wicked. I assume they'd go with the much happier musical version as opposed to the darker novel. It would certainly be interesting if they managed to get Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth to reprise their roles, although I don't know how much different they'd sound in those roles now compared to over a decade ago.

In Canada, Infinity figures are 2 for $15. Thinking about getting Elsa and Anna even though I don't have the game haha.

They're also selling for over MSRP on eBay.
