Microsoft PR:

http://news.xbox.com/2014/04/xbox-one-march-npd

The team and I had the honor of joining thousands of you in Austin, Texas at SXSW this past March as you waited in line for the Titanfall launch on Xbox One. We were blown away by your passion and enthusiasm on launch night and since then, it’s been exciting to see gamers around the world playing “Titanfall” on Xbox Live. Today, we congratulate our friends at Respawn Entertainment, and Electronic Arts, as “Titanfall” for Xbox One was named the number one selling game in March, according to NPD Group figures released today.

We’re also happy to share today that more than 5 million Xbox One consoles have been sold-in to retailers since our launch. The new generation is off to a strong start, with global Xbox One sales outpacing Xbox 360 by more than 60 percent at the same point in time, a true testament to your love of console gaming. Even more important to us is how much fun you are having on Xbox One. It’s amazing that Xbox One fans are spending an average of five hours per day on Xbox One and collectively have totaled more than one billion hours of time spent in games and apps on the console. We’re also thrilled to see your use and enjoyment of the latest features and apps we have released as part of our regular system updates. In particular, we broke new usage records with the number of unique Twitch broadcasters in the first week of availability.

Of course, we’re just getting started with this generation and the months ahead will bring several announcements we think you’ll love. The team will continue to deliver regular improvements and new features based on your feedback through frequent system updates. Many more games are on the way with titles like “Sunset Overdrive” and “Project Spark,” many new games coming to Xbox One through the ID@Xbox program, and many more entertainment experiences. We can’t wait to share more games with you in June at E3.

We are grateful for your support on Xbox One and the continued popularity of Xbox 360. We’re going to continue working hard to earn your loyalty and making Xbox the best place to play games.

MS PR did NOT disappoint! So much Spin. Shipped numbers...Xbox Family...No Titanfall numbers but some talk about a titanfall event instead etc etc. Lovely!

You guys don't need to double check me, I'll just say this- I'm eating Pizza and ....

...

PS4 @ 60k more :).

I think this is the best result for consumers. Even though the XB1 is doing well, it's comparatively getting a black eye. Microsoft has done a lot to reverse course, but I hope they are forced to be even more aggressive now that their ace is out from the sleeve. The better box (imo) is being rewarded, and I think that's the best thing for this generation.

For the titanfall sales numbers, I know they include PC, but does NPD count digital sales? Seeing as most of the PC sales would be thru Origin.

Glad to see South Park at number three; I really enjoyed the game.

I hope that the FFX HD remaster at #8 is a sign that it sold well. Additionally, I hope that most of those sales are on the Vita. I have been having a blast playing through it on my Vita, and if strong sales persuade Square-Enix (and others) to put other PS2 remasters on the Vita, I would be throwing my money at them.

Microsoft spent the month hyping Titanfall, giving Titanfall away for free, giving Xbox Live Gold for free, discounting their bundles, and Sony still beat them by doing nothing. I thought for sure Xbox One would win the month.

They didn't exactly do nothing, they had a massive marketing push themselves with Infamous and got new bundles out there and stock onto shelves.

It's got to be disappointing for MS but they never really stood a chance of getting any massively positive reactions from some either way, if it was ahead it would have been "expected" because of Titanfall and being behind just gets predictable reactions. Great news for Sony though, hopefully we're going to see something special at E3 from all the console manufacturers this year, Nintendo and MS certainly need to show up with the way the PS4 is selling.

I wasn't very optimistic that a multiplayer-only shooter based on a new IP would have a massive impact on sales, but it's still surprising to see after all the hype.

If Sony launched some AAA exclusives in Fall 2914, they could have destroyed Xbox by the end of the year. Now, we'll have to wait for Fall 2015 instead. Microsoft is in a terrible position either way, it's just that they'll burn more slowly like this.

Forget PS4.outselling XB1 - if that 311k number is correct, that's the more shocking info. Expect a price cut and/or kinect jettison soon.

PS4 is just a beast. I don't think the Xbox One numbers are that bad.

Xbox One needs to drop the Kinect and sell it for $350. I expect an E3 announcement about it.

I think the DRM debacle angered people more than we thought. They certainly didn't respond to a price drop and a game bundle like we expected. It is like they are numb to Microsoft right now.

Isn't the X1 like considerably ahead of the 360 at the same point?. I swear the amazing success of PS4 is clouding peoples minds when it comes to X1 sales.

I shouldn't be too surprised after the 7 million reveal yesterday, but... damn, that's impressive. What can you say, man? Gotta give it to Sony. They've been absolutely killing it with the PS4. Xbox One's numbers have been fantastic, but PlayStation 4 is breaking records left and right. Congrats to them on winning a tough March!

PS4 has won this gen, this sort of sales disparity will remain for a few years at minimum. We've seen enough of console sales cycles to acknowledge that it takes massive hardware shakeups like the introduction of Kinect to shift that momentum. Even generation defining software doesn't really change things as Halo proved a few gens back.

So MS's best bet is some sort of Kinct like shake up that makes everybody want to try it... Thing is, it's Sony who is leading that momentum with Morpheus and it could see the lead increase if it really gets the mainstream talking
