Kingdom Hearts Community Thread: Now everybody can be a Keyblade Wielder!

I'm not asking about characters or worlds you would like to see. That always boils down to the same few things over and over again anyway. I would like to know if there are any concepts or ideologies you would like to explored in KH. Also if there's a type of game you would like to see KH emulate. Please be specific: just saying "I want multiplayer" is completely lame. Do you want MMO multiplayer? League of Legends/DoTA? Create a character or characters? Plot based or make your own fun? Since this works better with an example:

Concept: Since Kingdom Hearts is so very much about "My friends are my power", I would love to see a hero that was the opposite of Sora. Someone who's got power from being alone or the like. Or mayhaps a villain that got power via destroying and manipulating friendships. I don't know. I would also like to see a more morally ambiguous villain. I mean Ansem SoD, Xemnas, and MX are great, but I could take less ham in my diet too, if you know what I mean.

Gameplay: I only want one thing and one thing only from the Kingdom Hearts series: Monster Hunter / PSO styled game. Four player co-op, mission structure, multiple costumes, create a character. Set it in the past and use the plotline of KH chi. Plus with what like, 11 different keyblade wielding styles thus far? Let up pick what kind of keyblade fighting style we want to use as well. Or, you can tie the wielding style to the keyblade itself. Big and unwieldy? Terra style. Two handed grip? Eraqus style. Short and speedy? Ven style. Two big blades? Valor style. Two light blades? Roxas style. Make the abilities item drops with a trading system. Let us pick classes too. So a dual wielding mage would be Master form style, a dual wielding tank would be Valor and a dual wielding DPS would be Roxas. Call it RE:chi. Done and done.

Dat KH Theatrythm.

Anyway I said this last page but give me a skill tree system since everybody loves those. As for multiplayer options I have said this one before too but I think it would be totally cool if you could play KH(3) campaing in CO-OP controlling one of the party members (be it Donald, Goofy, Mickey, Riku, whoever. You could jump in and out to a friends game playing the whole campaing with them or just casually come help. This would mean few things tho: Your basic Donald/Goofy would need a total rebalancing to something closer to what the main characters have been in terms of power and mobility. The menu systems would need to be a streamlined to easy access and fast responses (tho KH does pretty well on this anyway mostly, you rarely really change equipment or abilities outside of when you get them. This isn't exactly a loot heavy franchise). Doing it this way would automatically open up the option for single players to change their playable character to anyone in your party if you felt like it making the game possibly more replayable if you did stick with mostly one character per playthrough.

This would probably still mean however that your basic world specific Disney/FF/whatever party members would only be AI controlled not to make things too complicated for developers or have half assed playable characters. Do it so that when they join you you don't have to swap your main party members out. When Aladdin for example joins you for that world he would be a fourth (or third or whatever depending on the situation) party member only controlled by AI and be more of a supporting thingy rather than a full party member.

Stuff like this would make BBS esque Co-Op arenas and whatever much more connected to the other game..

Basically a seemless mesh of Single Player/Co-op would be cool to see (tho I don't expect it). Make it kinda like Diablo or something, just not quite as fast paced :lol. PS4/XBO are more than capable to handle this type of game seemlessly.

This would of course mean that the concept of Game Over should probably be changed to all controllable party members dead rather than only Sora/whoever. In single player it could be handeled so that when you die you swap characters to the next one untill you ran out. Game of course would be balanced around this fact. Other way to do this is to have single player work as before (character you control=dead means game over, no swapping characters during combat) and multiplayer having the team dead=game over but the enemies being much more powerful to counterbalance it.

What do you think will happen to Xehanort at the end of KH3? The reason I bring it up is because thus far, the only enemies that Sora has destroyed thus far have technically been monsters*; Ansem SoD and Xemnas were just heightened forms of Heartless and Nobody, respectively. And though he didn't know Marluxia and Larxene were anything but humans when he destroyed them, at the time his heart via memories had been tampered with to the point of an obsessive protectiveness of Namine. Frankly, do you think that Disney would be okay with one of their characters straight up murdering a human? Or do you think it will go the Final Fantasy route and turn him into some type of eldritch abomination from absorbing too much darkness/Kingdom Hearts/macguffin to lessen the moral implications? And of course, there's always the possibility that Xehanort reforms and becomes an ally. I would hate that. Unless it was like, Young Xehanort turns on his older self and creates a stable time loop for himself or something, I don't want Xehanort pulling a face heel turn (and honestly, I wouldn't be happy with this either, but I would accept it). So how do you expect them to deal big bad Mr. X?

*NB4 Xehanort is a complete monster. We're talking about the physical type not the amoral type.

They've certainly STRONGLY IMPLIED some human deaths in KH (Clayton, Lady Tremaine, likely one or two other Disney baddies I'm forgetting).

But in both of the cases I mentioned, at least, the death was caused by an enemy blowing up or falling on them rather than by a main character straight up killing them.

I suspect that - especially with the deep-mythos level forces KH3 is going to deal with - Xehanort will likely be destroyed by some sort of Ark-Of-The-Covenant type of deal. The other strong possibility is that Terra is responsible for some sort of face-turn that destroys Xehanort (perhaps involving self-sacrifice). I kinda bet Disney's got a clause in their contract with Squeenix that says that the main character can't be directly responsible for the death of any human (and indeed Disney animated films usually have the villain destroyed by some sort of hoist-by-their-own-petard mechanism).

But either way, expect Xehanort to be destroyed on more of a metaphysical level than on a purely biological one. It's not like the game is going to end with an old man's dead body.

Game will end with Xehanort on a life support+wheelchair and Eraqus coming back from the dead to pull the plug.

Also one hour monologue about numbers or something.

I hope KH3 is rated M to everyone's confusion, and it's like any other KH game for most part

then you get to the final battle in which you brutally murder every Xehanort in an increasingly disturbing way. The last one is turned into a... Human blob thing, like that dude from the movie Akira. You beat him up and he explodes, wiping out the entire universe.

Then, in a twist ending, the Xehanort explosion is actually the big bang of OUR universe.

e: kh4 will take place throughout our history, all the way to modern times and it's going to be the best thing ever

I actually imagined a historical KH at one point. Like instead of Disney characters, you fight with Abe Lincoln. Fuck yeah.

Also, which version of which game was your first and did Kingdom Hearts get you into anything else, like for example JRPG's?

----

I actually was not a gamer when I first heard of Kingdom Hearts. I was still in high school and into a couple of different things, mostly TCG's, books and music but not games simply because I didn't have any game systems other than my old SNES. One fateful day, I was in the kitchen with the tv on in the bakground, taking a break from writing a composition I was arranging when suddenly I heard it.

Now, I'm not sure if you're very familiar with music in the early 2000's, but this was far and away completely different from anything on the radio. So naturally, I had to know what the eff this was. And I turn around and was that Winnie the Pooh? OMG Peter Pan?! GENIE!! SIMBA!! I MUST HAVE THIS. My birthday was two months away and I badgered and badgered and badgered my parents to get my a PS2 and Kingdom Hearts. I drove to my friend's house like every weekend to make him play through the beginning so I could hear that song. I even recorded it on a cassette tape (you whippersnappers don't know what that is) so I could play it over and over.

Come my birthday and lo and behold, my parents came through. Having no familiarity with Final Fantasy past 6 (SNES ftw), the relevance of Cloud, Tidus, Wakka and Leon, Selphie et al were lost on me. I just knew I had a kickass game and I loved it. Eventually, KH got me into Final Fantasy and then JRPG's in general. I played backwards through the FF titles and broadly into SE's general catalogue (even The Bouncer) and I also broadened my musical tastes. Hikki's song is what grabbed me at first and got me interested in JPop, KPop, and world music in general plus rekindled my interest in anime. Long story short, Kingdom Hearts was literally a life changing event for me. If not for it, I wouldn't play games, I would have much different tastes in music, and my media viewing habits would be much altered.

I guess this explains why I spend so much time thinking about it, ha ha.

So how about you?

I got a demo-disc with my PS2 (must have been 2003/2004) and a video of KH was on it which just... blew my mind! I played a lot of Final Fantasy on my PS1 (FF6/7 and A LOT of FF9) and wanted to get FFX for my PS2, but instead, I searched for this game and eventually had a guy I knew from school lend it to me.
God, I loved every minute of this game and bought it myself after my first playthrough.

KH1 got me to try FF XII, and FF XII got me into JRPGs

Wish I'd remember how I ever came across KH though. I guess it just kind of popped into my field of view in some game store and I bought it cause it had Mickey and Goofy on it

Lightning Returns?

Kingdom Hearts 1 was my first KH game (not much of a surprise, I suppose). I remember being really intrigued by it. A huge fan of Squaresoft/Final Fantasy and I loved Disney, so.. seemed like something I should check out. Who knew I would become so into the series. I was 18 at the time, about to graduate high school. Good times, good times. It didn't really get me interested in anything else, though. I was drawn to KH initially because it was a JRPG and was made by Square.

What's everyone's favorite version of Dearly Beloved? Mine is probably Birth by Sleep, but I have honestly loved every single one. Dream Drop Distance has an interesting version because of the more up-tempo parts of it. I'm really excited to hear KH3's version.

The 358/2 Days Version is definitely my favourite. I really, really like 358/2 Days' story, it's a shame the game was so repetitive and... boring :/

Waiting for KH2 when I saw the first trailers was not easy for 14 year-old me. I listened to that Opening so many times^^

That's another good version of Dearly Beloved. Like I said, I love all the versions really, lol. I liked the story of 358/2 Days as well, but yeah..the game itself wasn't that fun imo. :/

I was so pumped for KH2's release... I'm pretty sure I skipped all my classes the day it released, lol. (was in college at the time)

Music, art, fan game, ect. Mainly looking for original creations, like the Frozen Field and Battle themes, or Kairi Drive forms, though well done stuff from canon is alright as well.

We need a release date for the KH II.5, Square is too quiet.

Yup...but I felt the same way about Xillia 2 and we just got a release date yesterday. Hoping we don't have to wait for E3 for info.

Now that Xillia 2 is in August, I really hope this releases in July at the latest :x

Calling it now: the reason for such a late release is so that they can throw together another ''tech demo'' trailer for KH3 only so that they can throw an ad for 2.5 at the end like they did last year with 1.5 :lol.

That's what annoys me the most about 2.5. It feels like every game under the sun has gotten release dates/periods except this one HD collection for a platform that is on it's way out and was playable to the public like 5 months ago. It is way past the time of more info if this is supposed to be released this year and hopefully before friggin holiday season. At this point if it was Q3 release starts to seem like it would have already announced like tons of other, actually new games.

I remember dem good times when I thought that maybe they were going for WW ~ May release with the lack of info for Japanese launch few months ago. I feel stupid now :lol.

Yeah, it's genuinely bizarre. It's not just that we haven't gotten a release date - there's pretty much been radio silence on the game. You'd think they could at least trickle out trailers pretty frequently and easily, given that the games in question are basically "complete" for the most part.

Calling it now PS4 port. No HD collection takes this long especially since they still have all the original assets for the games.

They must be developing two versions hence the silence because they want to surprise new PS4 owners.

Also WW release

What if PS4 had a HD collection collection thingamagicko where Sony requires at least two HD collections to be bundled together to qualify, so KH1.5 and KH2.5 get released as a single PS4 title?

I would laugh, because of the parallel with how they mandate HD collections for the PS3. Then ask for a God of War Mega Collection.

But seriously, I would just assume they released II.5 as early as possible to rake in sales from the Day 1 crowd, and then announce PS4/XB1 ports of both ReMixes for the fence-sitters and the people who traded/sold their PS3's for the next-gen systems.

Yeah, to me it makes far more sense to put out a PS4 collection with KH1FM, Re:CoM, KH2FM, BBS, and the 358/2 Days/Re:Coded modes where you hit play and let a horrible movie play overnight than *just* a PS4 version of 2.5.

Might even make sense to sweeten the pot by including DDD somehow in the PS4 port, I suppose.

But yeah in any case it makes the most sense to release the PS3 version before announcing anything for the PS4.

If you could change KH's genre, what would it be?

I would personally like to see it as a Diablo style loot game instead of an action platformer. Tons of keyblades, tons of abilities, tons of outfits.

I'd love to see a Japanese/anime-themed diablo-alike, too, but I'm not sure if KH's setting clicks in the least.

Go all the way with a crazy Character Action game like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. They're already pretty close to there. The different Keyblade forms from the last KH3 trailer sound like another step in that direction.

Or go in the opposite direction and make it Shin Megami Tensei style. Attract Heartless, Nobodies, and Unversed using your strength of will, warmth of heart, and determined mind. Fuse them together to make newer monsters that contain traits of each.

I'd even consider going Persona with it, but it'd be weird to me to try and date Disney Princesses. Dating FF characters would be funny. If there were a new set of original characters it could work. Or do a non-canon spin off with Organization XIII and Xion as the player protagonist.

Did you forget about FF X? 2.5 wasn't even announced a year ago.

Don't get your hopes up about a PS4 version right now. It's going to remain a PS3 exclusive when they start giving more info on it. Nomura said they finished recording last month.

Recording? So they voiced the cutscenes exclusive to Final Mix?

You seriously want to mention a game that showcases Squares's incompetence? The game took more time than making it!

2.5 was definitely being worked on before it was announced. Before 1.5 even came out probably.

Don't say it will always remain a PS3 exclusive. Or else you will be apologozing a year from now

They said the process for 2.5 was going faster than 1.5, but that's it.

All I said was that it was going to remain exclusive to PS3 for now, not always. Read my original post. When they announce a release date, it's going to be a PS3 exclusive. Whether they do a port a year+ from now is irrelevant.

God of War-styled hack and slash combat, probably. It would transition really well.

RPG that incorporates a real-time battle system. Maybe something like Valkyrie Profile. Then again a turn-based system w/ combination attacks sounds just as good.

Make it in 2D (pixel, hi-res art... i don't care) and you have my money.

I have two.

  1. I really want Kairi to not only be playable, but have a significant role in the plot.
And 3D helps reinforce that hope
  2. I want Sora to have more costume changes. Hate as I did Atlantica, I did love that Sora became a merman. I'm not saying everything need be as extreme as lion Sora (dear God, please no Cars world), but just the level of Tron for every world would make me happy.
How about you? What would you (realistically*) like to see?

No Worlds unless you justify with a specific reason!

"Because Frozen would be cool" is not a valid reason. I don't expect you to post an essay, but justify your answer at least.

*AKA, no "I wanna see Goku" or something that's not actually plausible.
