Dad kills son 'over online gaming addiction'

RIP.

Dad kills son 'over online gaming addiction'

A Frenchman got so angry over his son’s constant playing of online games that he snapped and strangled the young man during an argument at the family’s holiday home in southern France, it was reported on Tuesday.

A 43-year-old French father was behind bars after police said he killed his 23-year-old son in the family’s holiday home in the heat of an argument sparked by the young man’s addiction to online games, French paper Midi Libre reported.

Officers rushed to the family home in the tiny village of Luc-sur-Orbieu in the Aude department of southern France after learning of the fatal confrontation between father and son at 10:45pm on Monday.

While an autopsy will declare the final cause of death, it appears the father grabbed his son by the neck and accidentally strangled him during a fight, which was appears to have been sparked by the son’s addiction to online games, Midi Libre reported.

The father was being held on suspicion of murder.

Oh boy... didn't we have a similar story a few weeks ago?

Edit : important part left out of the EN source

Basically : there's investigating stuff, so nothing's certain yet. The whole 'dead killed his son because he was addicted to online games' is speculation, at least for now. According to the newspaper, the son had some serious psychological problems, and needed to take medication. The journalist then goes on to say that maybe the dad actually killed him while trying to keep him under control while he was having a fit or something.

I'm guessing he accidentally crushed his windpipe or something? It takes a lot to choke a man to death, you gotta keep going way past the point when they're unconscious.

rage m'boy rage...
something I feel often...mostly at MMO Devs.

You feel enough rage towards an MMO dev to wrap your hands around a child's throat and choke the life out of them?

Oh, you were saying that in jest; as a joke. Has me in hysterics; good job.

How does one accidentally strangle a person? I'm assuming the father used his hands?

That seems like a way to do it.

It's always surreal to me when parents intentionally kill their own children.

That's what I was wondering. It's not like a movie. The person should becomes knocked out well before they die I would think. Time enough to realize he's not fighting back.

Dad tried to save his son from the PC Gaming Master Race sect. Good will, wrong method.

Jokes aside, I hope the father gets punished like he should. RIP son.

Some of the comments in here are disgusting.

A local newspaper used 'Game Over' as a comment (I'm not sure it's called a headline if it's in the middle of the article but you know what I mean)

The kid could have been out late at night, dealing drugs or burning cars but nooo, playing games at home was too dangerous

I reckon the knowledge of having murdered his own son over video games is going to weigh heavy on this man's shoulders. And rightly so.

This should probably be added to the OP.

Still trying to get my head around how someone "accidentally" strangles their own son, the news source doesn't seem overly reliable tbh.

See this would be more likely but even then who in the world tries to help someone having a fit by grabbing their neck? You usually leave them alone if anything.

We don't know how bad his situation was though, you can mockingly compare gaming to drug dealing and say it's not in the same league but if someone has a problem with addiction playing games excessively can easily destroy their life.

Games get a bad rep for sure, mostly for no reason but to dismiss the fact that people are addicted to them seems stupid. It happens, the person usually has other issues too, it's not the fault of the Games Industry but it's still a problem for some people.

Using GAME OVER in a new article is particularly grim.

That's fucking disgusting! News outlets are just allowed to pluck stuff out of thin air like that and present it as fact? 'Oh we think it has to do with those evil vidyagames, not that the son had fits or anything, lalala'.

I'm guessing you haven't read the Daily Mail.

Thinking there is some underlying issues there.

Or, at the very least, the story has become twisted by speculation. If not though, people really need to just chill about MMO's, both the addicts and the parents. Just kick your kids out and demand they get their own place, GOD!

It was the preliminary report from Police sources that the father killed his son after a violent dispute started by the father trying to stop his son from playing video games grabbing him by the neck.

http://www.francetvinfo.fr/faits-di...u-il-jouait-trop-sur-l-ordinateur_583029.html
