Also, I assume this means we won't be seeing any QOL at E3? Seems like they'd do a live show if they had new hardware.

Non issue for me as well. I'd watch it on my PC anyway and Nintendo's streaming has the same chance to be shit as E3's.
That said i would prefer a presentation to see crowd reaction, but that's all.

They learned that they saved a bunch of money and that the lack of a "proper" conference means absolutely nothing...

A live crowd doesn't change whether the information gets out or not.

... and then went on to miss all of their sales targets and lose a bunch of money. Mission accomplished.

As long as the stream is up to par, I don't have a huge issue with it. However, I do like hearing the reactions to the announcements though.

Nintendo not having a conference at E3, but still presenting new game announcements means Nintendo cannot compete against Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo having games on the show floor shows that Nintendo is not able to compete against Sony and Microsoft, because Sony and Microsoft also have games on the show floor.

I hope you realize how utterly stupid the above sounds. Pls stahp.

I forgot that gaf was the "you need to spell it out word for word" police.

Not have a press conference means they are going to show Zelda, a knitted looking version of a C-tier Nintendo character and then some straight garbage.

Nothing exciting, nothing worth getting a live, mixed crowd excited about.

They are done for this generation.

I, like 99% of the public, will wait until this thing is in the clearance bin since it's pretty clear they are just going to go down with the ship.

I really, really hope I am wrong but Nintendo has truly embraced making the same games, mistakes and choices over and over and over so I highly doubt I am.

While I understand that the hardcore, investors, journalist etc will get all the things out too the public i really like live presentations. Hearing the reactions to the crowd when something big or stupid is announced makes it more fun to watch than a prerecorded video. It feels like watching a movie alone or making a nice dinner only for yourself it feels wrong without someone to share it with.

And yes I got friends and my lovely GF but wont beg them to stay up in the middle of the night to watch a game conference with me. =/

Think of it this way (if you don't think a PC is important), Sony is still riding on that momentum from when Jack dropped the mic. It's all about being visible, and a live stream on a website is the opposite of that.

I think you were repliying to me, so thank you for the calm and clear reply.
I'd just like to ask you: to whom should they be visible? To the media, right? Because the GAF fans we'll still be watching the video with the contents, right? So, what I'm asking is: is GAF disappointed because the media will not give proper coverage to them? Because to me seems that most GAF criticizing this approach are disappointed for themselves. As if our experience would be worst (and I honestly doubt this: it's not that journalist booos or cheers are improtant to me: contents are)

Or, in other words: it's a bad decision in terms of media coverage. But to me, doesn't matter. I could even experience a better video, if the record it (cut the pauses, the dead moments, possible issues as for Zelda SS, cut the "showtime crap" and so on)

"This is the one you´re waiting for" is kind of bold of them to say this...

..the same way its kinda huge they´re actually hyping E3 this year....

This just in.

For 2015 Nintendo will even get rid of the direct, relying on snail mail to reach its loyal fanbase.

but also compare that with the fact that Sony and Microsoft don't do anything like Nintendo Direct every other month and also with the fact that Sony and Microsoft conferences are full of garbage like celebrity appearances, excessively long demos, and nonsense talk.

Garbage that allows their content to be covered outside of the insular echo chamber of gaming forums and websites.

Its not about putting on a show for forum dwellers. Its about trying to win back the influencers, who skirt on the edge of gaming that have massive impact in the way brands are promoted.

How anyone cannot see that Nintendo directs are only preaching to a already convinced choir is beyond me.

I'd like Nintendo to be there simply for the media coverage. At this point, they're just phoning it in with regard to the Wii U. I don't know if E3 2013 was Nintendo's weakest (it's certainly up there...), but it was by far the least memorable.

There's always next year. ;_;

Probably all down to the Zelda U teaser. Do they normally say stuff like this?

Remember that E3 when they showed the Twilight Princess trailer and everyone cheered? Those cheers translated into about a million sales when the game released. I can't believe Nintendo is giving up on all of that money by not showing their trailers to a live audience. How are people supposed to know Nintendo games are any good if someone like Ravi Drums isn't there to show them it?

Awwwwwww yeah

Because E3 has become all about image. As I said, look at all the crap in the run up to E3 last year of people spreading that Nintendo was skipping E3. Even to this day people say that they completely skipped it.

What's wrong with image? Not everything has to be boring spreadsheets. I thought our medium was about fun and excitement.

Their Nintendo Direct was great from a home viewer perspective last E3, so I'm totally fine with this. It was shorter than the others, but without so much of the pointless fluff, more focus on games, which is far better really. Plus don't get me started on cheering/clapping for the stupidest things lol (although true hype like Twilight Princess is awesome).

It didn't do them any favor passing on the conference last year. The media narrative was Nintendo didn't even bother trying to compete this year its going to be Nintendo still don't get it so don't expect much going forward.

If they are doing this again, they are going to need Spike to show it live as well as having it on Twitch front page and YouTube (which their Smash Direct had). They need it to get the widest audience possible.
Honestly a lot of that was fluff and clapping. Clapping takes up a long time. Plus the waiting issues, pausing etc.
No it wasn't. Sony and MS talked more about games and had less time between them than Nintendo since Iwata feels the need to over-explain what we just saw...

To be fair, it isn't really that big of an issue. Those wanting to hear the news will still get it through normal means (either GAF or a website), it will filter out to the public and people will be informed. A conference is merely just a more public showcase to be big and blitzy, when really it all gets broken down into words later on.

I think the only big conferences that were interesting have been last year's Microsoft and Sony, and any hardware reveal one. Anything else is just "here's our game, watch us play it badly for 10 minutes." Nothing groundbreaking that a video can't do justice.

axisofweevils

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I don't care if they don't have a physical conference. I do care that they don't have only 41 minutes worth of content again.

Compare that with Sony's 1:47:54 and Microsoft's 1:30:50.

Sony's conferences have always been dragged out and overlong, IMO. The ending was good and memorable, but I remember a lot of my followers on twitter making fun of it with "zzzzz" tweets for the first hour or so...

Nintendo Directs = advertising games to existing Wii U/3DS owners and fans

E3 Conference = Advertising your systems/games to a mixed crowd of Nintendo, Xbox, and Playstation customers, along with the casual audience.

Nintendo, why the fuck would you not want to advertise your goods using both?

Well, I'm happy about this news. 45 minute Direct is way better than an hour and a half conference with the same content. I don't need crowd reactions to tell me whether or not I should be excited about something.

What is the difference? Why would you assume that people who wouldn't care about a Direct would watch a conference that is literally the same exact content, but longer and more drawn out.

A digital event sounds better than a direct. They say that it is more than a video. They use twitch and youtube now. What about all the other stuff they announced , it seems great!

I like the spectacle of press conferences. VGA awards are a trainwreck, but at least because of the production values and spectacle of a live show, they were at least watchable. Compare it to the VGX awards from last year, just a trainwreck and unwatchable.

Online Nintendo streams are just preaching to the (already small amount of) converted. How information is disseminated is a huge deal. Nintendo doesn't seem to care.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
So they're just giving up now?

They did the same thing last year.

As for the show, I was kind of hoping they'd show a new portable, but I think next year is probably the year to do it.

yeah but remember they were hyping a 'big announcement' at the media showfloor last year and it was the wii fit trainer.

Great for smash fans, not exactly a big announcement as it stands

I will never understand this line of logic, since Directs are available for everyone on the planet to see. They're not exclusive to Wii U or 3DS units at all.

They can't do a big stage event without anything huge to show. It would be an embarrassment and blow up in their face. I wish they DID have some big stuff to show, but I'm not a believer.

Nope, just another Nintendo Direct taking place during E3. I'm sure they'll have a booth at E3 as well... for those who can attend.

By E3 2016 though? hopefully they'll be ready to show us some new hardware, a preview of the next portable for example.

Them hyping E3 shouldn't be a huge event as much as what should be expected. The lack of conference does damper that a lot though.

On a personal level I find this quite interesting. Daily streams from the treehouse sound nice and maybe they'll really get more in depth about a lot of things.

Looking at it on a wider scale I don't think it's a good business decision though. E3 gets so much publicity everywhere around the world in also common news and morning shows and stuff like that. Streams that aren't directly part of the E3 don't get noticed like that.
Though if they announce new hardware (the new QoL stuff?) I suppose that might cause their streams to be noticed too (possibly).

The Smash Bros tournament is a fucking awesome idea though, props for that. I can't imagine how awesome it would be one of those people to be invited to fight there.
Also the Best Buy thing is good too, though I wish they took Europe to account too.
