My PS3 died and I’m trying to live to tell the story

So I just had difficulty putting a disc in to my slim PS3 (the first slim one), the sensor didn't seem to pick up the disc being inserted, so it wouldn't automatically insert itself.

Tried turning it off, didn't help, but then I while on the home menu I heard the drive make some noise. It now takes the discs and ejects them without issue.

Has anybody had a similar issue? Is my PS3 dying? I've only had it for a year or two.

Just bit on a 12GB super slim to replace my 80GB fat *sigh* :(

Hopefully this one proves to be more reliable because it produces less heat and doesn't have a slot loading drive.

My PS3 Slim 120GB (2008/2009 can't rememner) lately will auto shutdown after 3 to 4 hours of game play if I haven't played anything in a few days. It beeps three times and the red LED blinks. Press the power button twice and it will run again and it'll asked me to rebuild it's database. If I tried to play again after that or in the same day, the game play will become shorter (around 10 to 15 minutes) before it auto shutdown again.

Since it's already passed it warranty, I figured I'll just open it and clean it up. So I did the cleaning task last week. I've opened everything except the metal plate that hosted heat sink for Cell and RSX chips since I doesn't have any thermal paste at hand to replace the current one. After reassembling them back together, I managed to play without any auto shutdown. However, on the next day, it happened again. I leave it and tried it again this weekend, still the same.

So today, I've opened it all again including the top metal plate. I noticed the thermal paste not covering whole surface of Cell and RSX(Pic below). Is it normal like that? If I'm going to reapply thermal paste, what type should I use and describe best technique to apply it. So far I've heard a lot of way to apply it; put some in the center and apply the heat sink, put it like a line from corner to corner and apply the head sink, and put some on the chip and spread it with finger/card/anything flat and apply the heat sink.

P/S: Ignore the brown colored things near top left corner of right chip. It's just some dust..

There are different methods for applying thermal paste. Some prefer to spread it across the surface using a card or plastic wrap/gloves, some go with the pea/rice size or line method. I like the pea method.

I like Tuniq 4. I've also heard good things about Arctic MX-4. Anyway, check youtube or google for some ideas on how to apply the paste.

Ground yourself & good luck. I'm pretty sure I static fragged my 60GB this past saturday.

Edit: Searching pcgaf http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=745567 might help, too.

I have a Resistance 3 install data of over 2148mb that i'm trying to delete but it's not working. It just says deleting but nothing happens. Turned off the system, heard the 3 beeps, went to try again, It now says it's corrupted data. Still won't delete.

And i'm sure before the data was over 2500mb. Now it's 2148mb. Is it deleting slowly or something?

Welp, my March 2007 launch PS3 finally RLOD'ed.

It worked for me flawlessly for 7 years, but I think part of that was due to my simply leaving it on all the time, so the solder didn't really experience thermal cycling that much.

What seems to have killed it was when I reprogrammed the Harmony remote after getting the PS4. I had to use their new myharmony.com site to program the remote from scratch, and it wound up programmed so that whenever I switch away from the PS3 or shut the system down, it would turn the PS3 off.

After a week or two of occasional on/off cycling, boom, dead.

Last week my ps3 CD drive stopped working.

I can still play games I download but thats about it.

So I went today to buy a 500gig ps3 (asscreed 4 which i already have and TLOU which i didnt)

How do I go about transferring everything from my fat ps3 to my new one? (Saves primarily as everything else can be downloaded again)

Im guessing Data Transfer Utility is what I am supposed to do, correct?

How does that work?

Or backup utility? I dunno

Today I decided to play my PS+ Brothers game and turned on my Gran Turismo 5 Bundle Slim after around 2 months of no use, console wants to update to 4.55 and freezes at 99% for 2 hours so I had to restart the console but it bricked and now I can't fix it.
Updating from USB etc doesn't work because it can't find the system storage after each restart. Tried some stuff I found on the playstation forums but nothing worked.
I'm not sure if the HDD or the console itself is broken, said "PS3 Cannot Start . The appropriate system storage was not found" before and after I formatted it on my PC but the HDD itself seems to be working on my pc when it's clean.
RIP 2010-2014
How is the super slim compared to the normal slim in terms of stability and reliability?

Man, I really hope the Xbone and PS4 use a more flexible type of solder...
I've also noticed that in most cases it's the RSX that suffers the cracking.

^^And that's the reason why I'm scared shitless whenever I see a new mandatory update. I don't mind updating portable consoles, since they have the battery as a backup in case the power goes off, but a home console? Though luck. As for the second, they do produce less heat and use less power, but reliability it's unknown at this point

Probably you figured out already, seeing as how this post was made quite a while ago, but here it goes: Data Transfer utility works with an Ethernet cable. You just select the option, plug both consoles with the ethernet cable and follow the on-screen instructions.

60GB PS3 just randomly kicked the bucket while playing Lightning Returns. Sound got really stuttery, so I ejected the disc to see if it was okay, and the PS3 turned off right after ejecting.

I redid the cooling a few months ago. The old thermal grease was rock hard. I upgraded the fan, and put in a new power supply. I guess I was too late.

PS2 BC was very important to me in the past, but I may be okay without it now. Maybe I'll get a new one and throw this one in the oven some day.

Edit: Threw it in the oven and now it's working. We'll see.

Sigh, my 80GB PS3 got the YLOD again. Are you able to transfer all saves to a new console if I were to get a new slim ps3? I don't want to lose my Demon Souls/Dark Souls saves and such.

Same thing happened to me. When I looked up info, I remember reading that it's a common issue only with R3 data. I still have like 1.5 GB of corrupted data, and the only way to get rid of it is a system restore from my experience.

My 60 GB is still alive and kicking (I just finished playing some uncharted 3), but ive been thinking about opening up since its way past the warranty period and applying a new layer of thermal paste to it, just to extend its lifespan. Has anyone else who has done this got any advice on whether or not this is actually a good idea?

Is my ps3 fucked?

Was watching some movies on it and it was working fine, then (since I was over at family) I was setting up the wifi settings (like i've done many times before)
the ps3 froze on the settings menu

it just hard locked

After restarting it (holding down the button till it powers off) I got to the home screen (the XMB screen) but without any icons...

Restarting again gives me the it wasnt turned off properly message and that it'll check the hdd for corrupted data
then when it reboots to actually do the checking/fixing it hangs on the swirly horizonal bar animation that plays after the epilepsy warning but before you get to the XMB screen

restarting the ps3 just makes it do this all over again, I tried option 3 and 4 in safemode but those don't work either as it just hangs again while rebooting before it actually restores anything

There's no kind of yellow, orange or red light flashing or anything to indicate anything is wrong, the light is green like always:\

edit: tried the full format (which apparently took like a minute?) and it seems to have unshat itself
I think my savegames are still on the online storage anyhow (cba resubbing ps+ to find out) and if they aren't then it's no big loss since I'm done with the few games I cared about so couldn't give a shit about losing my savegames

It's weird though... has anyone else had this happen before? I see plenty of results on google but it's always some description in a problem thread on the playstation site without ever getting resolved or any kind of update by the person posting the problem

I hope it doesn't do it again because I really don't want to spend money on a new harddrive... the disc was already making weird noises after my 110 hour playthrough of dragon's dogma so I stopped using that since then so putting any money into this thing isn't going to happen...
As if I wasn't soured enough on this gen yet after my xbox360 RROD'ed 2 years ago:\

Well I think my PS3 fat died after a lot of years... or not. After a few days without using it,when I turn it on it shows the normal green light but there is no video or audio.

Doesn't seem to recognize pads, they keep blinking even if I plug them with USB.

I can put it on (green) or in stand by (red), eject game disks, it does the double beep if I keep pressed the 'on' button, makes the normal sound when trying to eject a disk with the disk tray empty, but again... no video signal even if the TV detects that there is something plugged.

I don't know if paranoid but I'd say the fan isn't as loud as before, even if when turned it on I can feel the air coming from it when placing the hand near.

Any suggestion? I also tried to put the recover menu but I don't remember how to do it or it doesn't work.

It did happen to me once and playing with these options finally recovered it, but as I remember I did lose my HDD stuff (including some cool savefiles)

My 20 gb launch system suddenly shut down during UC3 online multiplayer and flashed its red light.

I can turn it on and I backed up my saves but I am worried as fuck. :(
Almost a year later with another update, but my console shut down during a playthrough of CoD: Ghosts' campaign (I played for around five hours) and blinked its infamous red lights. I saw no Yellow light and it was able to boot up again normally as before. It works, but I'm going to back up my saves as soon as possible.

I don't want my baby to die. :(

Edit: Backed up my saves in case anything happens.

My second one died last week :(

What sucks is the power COMPLETELY died (no lights at all) and I couldn't get the Gamefly disc out that I had JUST got in the mail (and the first game I got).

Looks like i dodged a bullet with my PS3 60gb (1TB), 2 days ago i've had 5 shut downs with yellow light and red light while playing GTA. It was a false alarm, the ventilation was quite dusty even though i cover the PS3 after every session. Cleaned it up and haven't had any problems ever since.

Nonetheless i made a back up of all my saves just in case. I know it will die one day, i have it since 2007.

So I ended up keeping my 80Gb Phat with the sketchy hdmi port and I just ended up buying a 500GB slim.
I bought a Cat5e cable, connected the two, and started the Data Tramsfer Utility. They won't detect each other.
What gives???

You need to use a crossover cable (i.e. the little wire ends of the cable have a couple colors switched) if you're going to directly connect the two consoles. I don't think the Ethernet port is auto-sensing in both PS3 units unlike the Xbox 360 (and perhaps Xbox One).

Can you connect the Phat and Slim to a router instead?

I can't really test it on my router due to its location in house, but do you think I got the wrong kind of cable?
On the website, Sony says you can use a "straight-through" or "crossover" cable.

EDIT: Crisis averted! I got it to start. Dunno how.
I...
Disabled internet connection and media server on both ps3s
Deactivated my account on phat and activated my account on the slim
Deleted all the music off the phat that I had accumulated
Changed out the Ethernet cable I was using with one that clearly stated it was a crossover cable

It says it's got an 1 hr 22mins to go.

Thanks for the reply.

My ps3 turned off while watching game of thrones. Attempting to turn it on now results in a red flashing light. I'm assuming it's dead?

I called Sony and they said for $89.27 inclusive they'll repair or replace it with another one. I'm in Canada. Has anyone used this service? What was the experience like? Is it worth it? How long will it last after the repair/replace? I'm trying to determine if the cost is worth it.

Thanks

From what I gathered based on people's experiences on the internet, when a PS3 YLODs once, it will always be susceptible to a YLOD, even if you get it reballed and whatnot.

Some people get lucky and get a couple years out of their repaired PS3 before it YLODs again, and some guys are really unlucky and their PS3s YLOD right after the warranty period for the repair ends

I just went ahead and bought a new one, because I'm losing my saves either way. I do miss the PS2 BC though :(.

Has anyone had any issues with audio? My ps3 is abnormally loud and I have known that there would be issues eventually but suddenly the game audio started crackling like a wood fire. I believe it is dying but it's not completely dead yet.

I am praying that sony release a new ps3 model at e3 so that I can order a new smaller, quieter revision.

Sorry to bump this thread, but my 80gb ps3 finally got the YLOD after 7 years. Can't believe it lasted me this long honestly. ...is there a quick fix so I can upload my saves on psn? I think I have my vesperia saves on the cloud, but also want to put my 2nd playthrough up...

Welp. Seems like my PS3 has finally died after coming back from the dead from my first YLOD last year.

Got this message "A serious error has occurred" when swapping HDDs, and it won't recognise any HDDs now.

Is there some loophole to get Sony to replace my console for free? I'm sure I've read stories about people citing something and Sony being forced to replace it. I'm in the UK btw.

It was an 80GB Fat, which I'm 99% sure they don't bother to repair anymore and send Slim/Super Slim replacements instead.

Hello everyone,

Friday I was playing NBA 2k14, around 1:30 am a thunder just F**** everything, I´m talking about a big thunder, after this i smell something burned, I thought it was the tv than i turn on tv and ok, turn on ps3 and ok, after 30 seconds just stop working and when i try to start this happens green light for 30 seconds after this red light.
I thought it was Ylod, I open ps3 make the process to fix and nothing happens, Now i dont know what can be, someone can help me?

Well I never expected I'd be joining the ranks of you fine lords and ladies, but alas here I am. Just got the farewell cry from my 80GB BC MGS4 bundle unit. Six good, loyal years (and one week after getting a PS4!! Methinks my unit was jealous).

So I've begun the heavy-hearted process of moving on. What's the consensus on Sony's trade-in program to get a later model on the cheap? Are the replacement units reliable and long-lasting? That's the way I'm leaning right now. I'll miss the BC of course, but at this point I'm more interested in reliability and longevity--my PS2 and PCSX2 are still going strong, anyway.

And I'm also concerned about being unable to perform a data transfer and having to rely on backup/restore. I've got PS Plus so all my saves are backed up there and I've never rented or bought any music or videos on it. Would that effectively render moot the downsides to backup/restore vs data transfer? Or is it still more worthwhile to do the data transfer? Will my ps2 software memory cards survive the restore to a non PS2 BC unit?

Lastly, my PS3 is obviously long out of warranty, but I've also broken the seal on it to do a de-dusting and fan and thermal paste replacement a year ago. I will also open it up again to get the disc out and see if I can get it to power on once more and do a more recent backup. Will that keep Sony from accepting my money to trade in my PS3?

Cheers, gaf

Edit: On a whim I did the towel trick I'd read about and it worked! Sprung right back to life. In the process of backing everything up now but it looks, feels, and sounds as well as it did before. I know I'll have to replace it soon, but I wonder how far I can get with it. Sounds like Sony's going to be modifying the super slim slightly, probably for the fall or winter... I might try to hold it together until then. The guy I read about the trick from said once he got it going he left it on for 24 hours, and it's been running fine for 7 months. Might see if I can duplicate that and then trade it in once I get a replacement. Hmmm... risk vs reward...

Oh well. My PS3 60GB finally kicked the bucket after a few warnings, glad i've bought a PS4 and now i'm thinking on getting a brand new PS3 soon.

The problem is, i got the YLOD while i was playing FFX/X-2 Remaster and now i can't get it out. How can i make it eject without disassembling it?

If it's one of the fatty models, turn the switch off and press the eject button. Without releasing the eject button, turn the switch on and rapidly press the eject button. This should activate the fans and the disc will eject. I did this last night with The Last of Us stuck in my ylod 40gb.

My PS3 (80GB b/c Motorstorm Bundle) died quite a while ago and during the time between the first ylod and the last, I've had a friend take it completely apart and do the temporary fix (thermal paste, heat gun, etc.) a few times. Does anyone here know of a legit business that can do the closest thing to a permanent fix (the reballing of the RSX)?

Thanks!

I believe my dead PS3 saga is now over, and it was... a success! I've decided to type out all I did to hopefully cut down on time spent searching around for future PS3 mourners. I did a lot of research and compared several methods and videos and opinions to make the choices I made, so here's what I've got:

After I did that hair dryer/towel trick, it died again about 7 hours into the backup. So if all you need is to get the disc out and you don't care about the PS3 long-term, this will do it.

But with this death, I wasn't getting the YLOD anymore... it would stay on for maybe 5-10 mins before shutting down, which I deduced was an overheating problem. So I took it apart, redid the paste with the pea method, and slapped it back together. And it was still no good. The problem this time was back to the YLOD!

I wasn't giving up yet! I knew I'd have to get a new PS3 soon either way, but I really wanted to make sure I was all backed up to the cloud and wanted to do a system backup, as well as MAYBE get it stable enough to sell to someone less risk averse than I (with a full disclosure on the system's history of course). So I set out to do a reflow following this guide on instructables. I didn't want to spend $40 on a heatgun, nor did I want to spend $150 on a reball, NOR did I want to spend $125 for Sony to send me a refurbbed unit that likely wouldn't last me a year. So the oven method (which this guy prefers to the heatgun method anyway) would have to do.

I followed every step, including the full 8-hour pre-bake, the sticky tack and foil, the flux, screw stands, oven reflow, etc. Then I put the thermal pads (which I'd installed a year prior when the system was getting loud during TLOU sessions) back on and some MX-2 thermal paste, but this time I did the spread method, rather than the pea method. And not only is my PS3 back to life, but it's quieter than ever! Since a few years ago, the fans would spin up really loud really quick, even after I opened it up a while back to clean out about a pound of dust and install those thermal pads. I chalked it up to old age, old components and just hoped it wouldn't die.

But now after the reflow, the fans don't spin up nearly as high anymore. In fact, just sitting on the XMB or playing a low-intensity PSN game, it's almost totally silent. When I put in a more demanding game the fans might spin up to a fraction of the noise they did before the reflow--to a soft hum most of the time. The thing is as good as new now, and it's awesome. I'm considering taking my chances and not selling it or replacing it just yet. It just hasn't looked/sounded this good in years. I know reflows are only supposed to be good for a few months, but the results so far have been very optimistic. And I'd love to keep that PS2 capability if I can help it. So we'll see, but my plan before was to get a new slim during a holiday sale this year. Might still do it, but now I don't know!

A few things that went differently for me from the guide:
1. The prebake: He says to heat the oven to 150, but mine wouldn't go below 170. The little oven thermometer I bought for this reflow was reading something closer to 185-190. Did it that way anyway, with no insulation, and it was fine.
2. The actual oven reflow: He says to set the the oven to 500, but stop it once the oven reaches around 465 (remember, he first says to preheat, but then updates it to say to put the board in cold and allow it heat with the oven). The little thermometer only read 415 by the time my 500 preheat beeper went off. I panicked, not knowing which gauge to trust. But I ended up believing the thermometer I bought, and cranked the preheat temp up to 650, and waited until the little thermometer read 465 before stopping. That turned out to be the right move.
3. After the reflow, I noticed some weird syrup-colored "stains" or something on the motherboard. Perfectly fine, nothing to worry about there.
4. I couldn't get all the tack off the components. I got most of it, and cleaned as best I could, but it's ok if some is still on it. The tack is an excellent electrical and heat insulator, so it's not hurting anything.
5. Before the reflow, don't skimp on the flux. Don't hose it down or anything either, but keep dropping drops of it on (under) the chips until you're certain they're flushed with it. I had a few streams of it running down the board from the chips by the end. Sometimes I couldn't be sure if the drops were going under and out of the chips running along the sides, around the chips and streaming down, so I kept adding drops to be sure. Seemed to work out.
6. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on those screws/nuts, so I found a kit on amazon that had the right width, but were too short, and I fashioned them together by joining two of the same screws together with a nut. Sometimes it was hard to get them to stay, but I eventually worked it out.

Here's the stuff I bought:
Screw Kit
Sticky Tack
Thermometer
Flux
Thermal Paste

And for reference: my wife's hair dryer
And the thermal pads I had installed previously... not required, but wouldn't hurt.
I also used this to clean and prep the heatsink and chips before pasting. I had them lying around from the kit I bought when I repasted my 360. GooGone will work just as well.

Hope that helps!

Well, since the end of may, my ps3 80GB FAT model had shut off on its own with the flashing red lights, after that i tried a few thing, and could get some gaming time with it (ranging from 1 hour to 3). After this, more and more the console was turning off faster. by the end of june i gave up and stopped playing for a while, them went on to do my things etc, and today i had the urge to buy the warriors + vice city on PSN. Bought them off, and could play for a little while The warriors before shutting down. Now it doesn't even go to the menu screen before shutting down. In the XMB it seems to work fine and doesn't turn off that much, only a few times.

So yeah, i did a lot of tests and tried to solve it, but i don't really want a temp fix. This soldier fought hard for 5 full years before going down.

I've seen the slim having some similar issues, while the super slim has presented no issues besides the disc drive being faulty in some models. Do you guys recommend the super slim? is it safe? i know that we haven't had much time like the ps3 fat and slim models, but do you guys know if sony fixed this issue in the super slim model? thanks

My console turns on 80% of the time with the controller, and 20% of the time with the console's power button.

I get a blinking red light and beeps when it doesn't.
Edit: Green, yellow, then three red light with beeps.

Is there an easy way to tell if it's overheating, the psu, or hdd?

Ironically one warning sign is when the fan is blowing out *cold* air, that means that the console isn't dissipating heat like it should.

Hm, the rear exhaust feels cooler in one section than the other.

I've been playing Tomb Raider for an hour or two. Should I eventually get a "the system is hot error message"?

My slim red 320gb ps3 won't eject the dvd in it.
It still plays the dvd but when I press eject it makes a load of noise for nothing. I can put a new disc in so it must be moving it somewhere.

The disc drive has been really loud for a month maybe? Suddenly out of nowhere but I don't use it often and really don't want to lose my red one. Any ideas GAF? It's Sunday and I wanted to spend the day no lifing games. Even had my snacks ready.

Edit: manually ejected it like a boss. Hope it was a one off.

I want to apologize for reviving this thread. I read the posts and I wonder, how come you guys have not thought of reballing the PS3 system? I hear it works wonders. There is one user who reballed his system last month and it is still going strong.

I had a used 60 GB PS3 that has 1TB and when I bought it used, the fans were loud after few minutes of XMB. I know a tech (or an engineer) who fixes electronics and also reballs PS3. I had my PS3 reballed (both GPU and CPU) recently and ever since, the PS3 is a lot quieter. When I play GTA V or Uncharted 3, the fans will be like a soft hum.

I also tried a reflow on my other PS3 but the fans were loud so I am not sure if reflow makes your PS3 last a lot longer.

I'm not sure this is the right thread but I thought it's better than starting a new one.

A friend's SuperSlim PS3 won't start.

More specifically:

  • Led near usb ports goes orange when the power button is pressed.
  • Message "Cannot start. The appropriate system storage was not found." is displayed after a while.
  • I tried safe mode but it won't work. Same message is displayed even after the double beep.

Spoke with Sony service here in Greece but they don't do repairs, will only replace it for a cost.

I was wandering if the problem is caused by the HDD and just replacing it with a new 2.5" SATA would work.

Thanks.

I'm in an odd position now with PS3RepairShop.com and my 80GB Metal Gear PS3. I had the unit reballed by them last year with minimum hassle and they sent it back in a timely manner. They offer a lifetime warranty (a big reason I chose them in the first place) so I sent them my PS3 again when YLOD reared its head once more this summer. Setting up the warranty repair was no problem, but they are terrible about responding to my e-mails and phone calls. They've had my system for 2 months. About a month ago I got this e-mail from them after writing a "very concerned" e-mail:
Fault was still present at Stage 8 of second (warranty) GPU reball process; GPU ruled out as failure point. Fault lies elsewhere and is possibly reversible by performing “reflow” of other areas of the motherboard but procedure would be ineffective in reviving the console if there has been an outright chip failure. Mbd has already undergone two attempts at this service to see if unit can still be revived. Unfortunately the machine remains non-functional. This ticket will be closed when we’re satisfied the machine can no longer be revived. Thanks for your patience.
Sounds like a rough diagnosis. Since then I haven't gotten any updates despite my e-mails. This is really bizarre to me since they seemed to have a decent reputation everywhere I looked. I guess they just ignore warranty repairs in favor of first time repairs? The lack of communication is really bumming me out. :(

So every time I play Soul Calibur II HD Online, this happens:

See that black line there in the corner? Every time a shadow hits the corner of the screen, that tear happens.

I think my PS3 Slim is dying, you guys. ;_;
