"Yeah, we didn't even need to wait until E3 to show that CG trailer! They're eating up that box art Mark and Alex drew. Hey! There they are, thanks guys!"

"I can believe how much buzz that got! I was expecting something, but not this!"

Wait, so we can't have a gay bad guy because it will send a message that all gay people are bad.. In that case, wouldn't the same apply if he was good? By that logic, that would send a message that all gay people are good, which, like all people, is just not true.

Both scenarios are a-ok

Im starting to think its impossible to create any interesting character trait that wont offend someone. Cant have a bad guy that dresses eccentrically, because he might be gay, cant have a bad guy doing something evil, because...racism?
I would love to create a thread where neogaf designs an interesting cast of characters in which it is impossible for someone to find something offensive about it.
All bad guys must be white heterosexual males, just like real life. Then we'll have no complaints from anyone.

It must be exhausting to be "offended" by something each and every waking moment of one's life.

What is your end game here?

Do you want to force a creator to change a character or an image (which they have the freedom to make any way they choose to make) because it goes against YOUR ideology?

A fictional character.

You want somebody to change a fictional character because that character's fiction goes against YOUR beliefs.

Is THAT your idea of "diversity?" To squash all speech, opinion and expression that goes against YOUR beliefs?

Why are YOUR beliefs so important? Why are YOUR beliefs "right?"

What a piggish, narcissistic way of thinking (and acting).

Bravo.

PRO TIP: If you want to stop being a victim, then stop being a victim.

I don't care whatever quotes you post that implies the Internet agrees with you OP, you just sound like the kind of person that actively WANTS to be offended and pick a fight.

No offense to anybody but this is typical of internet culture, the social justice warriors look around for fights to pick. I myself am for social justice, but I do not go around on the internet and look for fights. I let the intentions of others be explained before I get worked up over anything, which is why I see this thread as jumping the gun on something that may not even be true. To many people are quick to judge, and succumb to knee jerk reactions, when it comes to the internet.

Things I learned in this thread:

-Gay people can't be racist
-It's not okay to be gay AND evil
-Wearing/liking pink/purple/magenta means you're probably gay

I have to sell two of my guitars and a bit of clothes, I don't want to misrepresent this glorious bod of mine.

My question to you would be, had this character's suit been, say, black, would you have mentioned anything?

My bet is no. In fact, if any of our resident artist is up to this task, just for illustration purposes, you'll see this whole thing, ironically, paints an interesting picture about your preconceived notions, as a bisexual.

Completely agree with this. If OP is bi/gay then he should know, more than everyone else, that you can't tell from looks alone what someone's sexuality is.

I dont see anything wrong with it except it seems more like a cover fit for Saints Row lol.

Not that it is a bad thing, I'm a fan of Saints Row!

I don't like the idea that the only gay man that is "okay" to be portrayed is a bland straight guy who happens to enjoy dick.

Eccentric, flamboyant gay men do exist. I've been in relationships with some. Should they be ashamed of themselves? Are they "worse" at being gay than someone whose sexuality is ambiguous until they flat out state that they are gay?

There's room in narratives for all kinds of characters.

That would be the most boring cast of characters you'd ever see.

Great post.

Peoples reaction to this as racist is ridiculous and laughable at best.

Also maybe its dependent on location but wearing a earing on left ear = not gay.

Honestly, that's going to happen either way. Whether he's gay, racist, both or neither. These are Youtube video comments we're talking about.

This. You'd get comments like "The ending is so good because you get to shoot that [insert derogatory term for minority here]" regardless of minority.

Yes the guy in the cover does look like gay, why are people afraid admetting so? Is it now ofensive calling a gay person gay?

Oh and that cover is really bad "In My Opnion"

What the fuck? How does someone "look like gay"? Fuck, I've been wrong this whole time then, since I don't "look like gay" I must be straight.

Wow this thread is a giant hyperbole and overreaction to something we don't even know anything (storywise) about. SMH

This is the vibe I'm getting from the post.

Depicting something =/= Condoning it

OP just looking to get offended.

I'm now more interested in this than I was before.

Videogames as an developing artistic medium doesn't stand a chance so long as this regressive, quixotic culture of crusading against any and all depictions of social injustice continues to poison our conversations. I don't know whether this desire to be offended comes from an unwarranted sense of self-importance or a genuinely primitive, moralistic understanding of art, but for some reason it seems endemic to the usually progressive online dialogue surrounding game development.

Gotta love threads like this where 10 page discussions over fictional characters which can have any of its aspects changed at a whim.

Because there is ambiguity some self important person has to project things no one else sees.

I'm not seeing it.
Sure, he's wearing pink, so he's obviously gay then? If he is, a pink suit means it's a bad way to portray him?
And because a Gurhka soldier is present, captured, and not white, he must be racist.

Man, this is reaching.
Whatever. I like the cover.

I don't see the problem here they're trying to tell a story, if you don't like it don't play it but as far as you know he straight not gay, or maybe he's straight and the protagonist is gay, or maybe everyone is gay, either way we won't know untill it comes out. Also yea the guy is white, but so have been most of the people taking over native populations, though not exclusivley so I don't realy see that as racist just typical or even cliche, but not racist. Like I said it's their story let them tell it, then judge it.

People think the guy in the pink suit is white? I thought he was Chinese or at least from the Far East. I might need to go to Specsavers if thats the case.

Wouldn't it be great if this guy turned out to be the protagonist?

I hope you all don't take this the wrong way, but I'd love to play as an openly-gay racist warlord.

I hate this Kotaku-style clickbait bullshit. The OP is assuming WAY too much, let's wait until the game comes out and make our minds up then.

I hope you all don't take this the wrong way, but I'd love to play as an openly-gay racist warlord.

I second this.

Kinda looks Asian or Eurasian to me. The guy in the dirt with the 'Nade could be the player character.

I can't help but feel OP has made a prize fool of himself though.

Tomat

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
This is off topic, but the guy in the suit looks like Patrick Stewart.

I think I may assume then, that if that character is a straight guy, theyre telling us that straight people are bad! Because usually, most of antagonists are straight!! Damn it! =(

Agreed 100% this shit must stop.

That's what you get for releasing questionable cover art without releasing any further relevant information.

Well, is generally expected you can wait a little for judge an enterteiment product, specially when the stuff revealed in clearly satirical.

I haven't judged the final product as of yet but considering Ubisoft's previous efforts I highly doubt they have the writing chops to actually handle this subject in any respectful or nuanced fashion. We'll see.

Well, I saw Ubisoft trying to be progresive in the past before (Assassin Creed Liberation and DLC Protagonists), and I think they got the memo that FC3 sucked in the story deparment (after the heavy focus in that during the marketing)

While there is nothing inherently wrong with a gay antagonist, it worries me that it might not be done right. Also if the only time we have gay characters in games as main characters that are bad guys, what message does that send to people? All gay people are bad, or it will just fuel their hatred they already have towards gay people. I can see it now, people thinking "Finally, I can call a character in a game a faggot and he will actually be one."

I think i can count on one hand how many gay characters i have come across in games, to say that "OMG ALL GAY CHARACTERS WILL BE VILLIANS" is just wrong. its pretty new ground, yes the villian might turn out to be gay, get over it.

And if someone is a cunt at heart, it doesnt matter if its the hero or villian, they'll still be a cunt and call them a faggot.

+1.

The only downside if that guy is the main character is the game is first-person, so you would barely get to see him and he looks AMAZING

Maybe one level can be a house of mirrors

I'm more concerned over the actual game quality, for example, will it suffer from the usual Ubisoft open world design shortcomings like tons of padding, or some pointless on-line/social mechanic which adds nothing but grind and boredom (Kenway's Fleet). Ubisoft sure can pull off an interesting game world, only, they often end up going for quantity over quality, artificially making the game longer and ultimately hurting the experience.

Assuming the OP isn't parody (and with his quality of logic, it might as well be) that's not his argument. Here is his argument:

Antagonist is bad.
Antagonist is gay.

Therefore, gay = bad.

So we don't know anything about the context of the art yet?

Seems to me all I know at the moment is that this is another Far Cry, which is all the turn-off I need really

Wake me when Blood Dragon 2 arrives

I agree also, the "white character" has slanted eyes, which is why I do not think he is white (no offense to anybody).
