Friday Studio Estimates:

1) Godzilla - $38.5M
2) Neighbors - $8.4M - $74M total
3) Amazing Spider-man 2 - $4.5M (down another 55% from last Friday) - $160M total
4) Million Dollar Arm - $3.5M
5) The Other Woman - $2.1M - $67M total

- The Winter Soldier was at $184M after its third Friday. Thor the Dark World was at $158M
- Spider-man 3 dropped 53.5% in its third Friday, and had made 77.5% of its gross by this point in time. If ASM2 follows that pattern, it will end at $206M

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
Godzilla opened to $38.5M on Friday, giving it the biggest opening day of the year. Barring crazy drop offs today and tomorrow, $100M is pretty likely. That means that there is a decent chance that Godzilla's opening weekend will eclipse Pacific Rim's domestic total.

holy shit, BIG FUCKING G!!!

Godzilla's opening day = $38.5M

Pacific Rim's opening weekend = $37.3M

North America prefers its name brand giant monsters and robots.

This is great news. If this had flopped, we would be saying our farewells to the monster/kaiju genre for good, but Godzilla turned it around after PR's failure. Bring on Gamera and Ghidorah in the sequel!

Scrap together $10k. Shoot a "found footage" movie of possessed atheists terrorizing a Christian family for their belief in the Lord (hitting two low budget movie demographics at once). Profit.
Brilliant idea.. no really. It would light up the box office. It would offend a lot of people, but that would only increase the bank.

And I think I remember correctly that there may be a few crow eaters who predicted Godzilla to bomb after Pacific Rim's performance.

Great opening weekend for a monster movie is nice to see. Drop for Godzilla is going to be ugly though. X-Men will open big and steal a good amount of the audience, and then you have the fact that the movie was probably heavily front loaded with "nerd" hype.

I don't think X-men will do as well as Godzilla. It seems to be on everyone's tongue, the marketing for the film was very well done. And the Japanese 'controversy' added to it favourably.

X-Men gonna SNIKT Godzilla's legs right out from under him. Take my word for it. I'm from the Fyoocha.

Nothing will drop much next week. It's Memorial Day weekend. Godzilla will do $60M+ over the 4-day weekend. Amazing Spider-man is wrapping things up, so that and X-Men will be the weekend's spectacle attraction. The only other audience draw is an Adam Sandler movie.

Hasn't that Sandler film been tracking super bad, too?

I'm just now realizing that every Spider-Man film has made less domestically than the one before it. The way things are going Amazing 3 might not even break 200 million in the U.S. Hell, there's a chance 2 won't even hit that much.

It will probably still make more than $20M next weekend. The exact same film starring someone other than Adam Sandler would cost $15-30M, so that would be a good result. Since it's an Adam Sandler flick, it probably cost $60-100M. Dude just uses his movies as a payday for his entourage.

Sony running the best superhero into the ground in coming years.

Gonna be sad to watch.

I still hold out hope that ....i will see a trailer for Avengers 3...it will be amazing and in the final seconds... , cap will throw his shield the camera will follow , then, TWIP it gets webbed to a wall. Pan to spidey, insert one liner, cut to Avengers 3...then "New" fades in at the top left corner.

Lol wasn't the last time Sony did that for Daredevil? I know they own Kingpin and let Fox borrow him for that terrible movie.

I wouldn't expect that for now, but it would be cool.

Weekend Studio Estimates:

1) Godzilla - $93.2M
2) Neighbours - $26.0M - $92M total
3) Amazing Spider-man 2 - $16.8M (down 53%) - $172M total
4) Million Dollar Arm - $10.5M
5) The Other Woman - $6.3M - $72M total

- The Winter Soldier broke $250M domestic and $700M worldwide this weekend. WW total is $704M

- WW total for Amazing Spider-man 2 is $633M

Frozen is still #1 in Japan after 10 weeks. It went up 8% from last week, and may still be making more this week than its opening week. Frozen's total in Japan is now $180M, and it is looking likely that it will end up as the highest grossing movie of all time there.

Thanks to the crazy Japanese run, Frozen is now past $1.2B, and will take the 2013 WW crown from Iron Man 3 next week. That would make it #5 of all time.

I think it might be possible Spidey doesn't even clear $10 mil domestic over the four day next weekend, honestly.

Normally I would say no, since most movies manage a 30-something percent drop over the Memorial Day long weekend, but X-Men is the exact same genre, so I agree. ASM2 is still hogging 4000 theatres, so I am expecting a 800-1k drop in venues as well.

I don't see ASM2 crossing $210M either.

What's up with Japan and Frozen?
Japan has a soft spot for Disney, even their most celebrated mangaka was inspired by classic disney movies, also the fact that it has two female leads also helps a bit.

Yeah, if it was anything but the X-Men equivalent of "The Avengers" opening that weekend, I wouldn't have gone there. But essentially, it's getting smashed between Godzilla and DOFP, and that combined with the movie's so-so (at best) word of mouth - I just don't see too many people choosing to take a chance on it that weekend when they could pick the monster movie in its second weekend, or the X-Men party just opening.

It's time for Kaz to intervene. Either fire the movie division executives who keep micro managing its properties to oblivion, sell Spiderman and be done with it or cut a deal with Marvel to feature Spidey in MCU to save it.

Frozen's run in Japanese theatres

Weekend # - Gross - Total

1 - $7.5M - $7.5M total
2 - $8.5M - $30M total
3 - $8.6M - $52M total
4 - $8.2M - $75M total
5 - $8.3M - $91M total
6 - $8.0M - $105M total
7 - $7.6M - $119M total
8 - $11M - $143M total
9 - $7.3M - $167M total
10 - $7.9M - $180M total

Pretty hard to predict and end point when the movie refuses to drop

None of this would have happened if the Sony executives weren't so desperate to put Venom on Spidey 3, this's one of the reasons of why the people in filmaking should not listen the rabbid fanbase.

They didn't, really. Sony execs at the time weren't listening to the fanbase, (I don't know that they ever have, really) but they did think Venom was the obvious choice based on the success of the character in the 90s.

From an executive standpoint, having to even argue between Venom and a guy made out of sand in a bad sweater was probably a mind-boggling argument to get into. "It's DARK SPIDEY. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU. SPIDEY WITH TEETH. IT'S SO EASY. JUST DO IT."

Awesome to see Godzilla open to such huge numbers, never thought it had such mass appeal.

This is definitely a win for the company that handled the advertising for the film. They did an incredible job in showing enough of the film to get people quite excited for it without giving away the whole thing, maintaining intrigue in a way that they never could capture with the 1998 take.

Fuck me. That's astonishing.

We've known that Frozen is massive for a while, but the last week or two have really driven home how massive and iconic this movie is going to be in years to come. I mean, it's half a year since the movie came out, and we're still getting fistfights over Frozen merchandise in stores and astonishing WW figures.

There will never be another Star Wars in terms of cultural impact, but from where I'm standing, Frozen seems to be its best 21st Century comparison. People have latched on to this movie in an amazing, unprecedented way.

It's too early to judge anything about Frozen. Avatar took in 2.5x as much as Frozen in the worldwide BO (and nearly double domestically) and no one is calling it the Star Wars of the 21st century now. Frozen could just be another Disney classic in 5 years after its fanbase has latched onto something else.

Godzilla has made $103M overseas for a $196M total.

I wonder what the terms of separation between Legendary and WB entail in regards to Godzilla. I would have to think that WB would try everything they could to get on distribution again, even in light of Legendary's current partnership with Universal.

The estimate for Godzilla was only 16k away from actuals. Not too shabby tbh

Kingpin is going to be in the Daredevil series, so there's that.

Does the Daredevil series count as a TV series? Cause I don't think they own any of the TV rights to Spider-Man anymore.

Man, I'm just realizing how dumb the laws and guidelines of the entertainment industry can sound sometimes lol.
