Gameboy emulator inside Oculus Rift

You guys realize what this means, right?

We can design our childhood bedrooms and living rooms in virtual space and play games the way we used to. Awesome and sad at the same time.

And we reach adolescence, we can lie in bed jacking it to a virtual porn mag!

This is perfect, because you can control your lighting conditions in your virtual world and don't have to sit by a lamp to play it.

It would be awesome if you had to walk around the virtual room to find a spot where you could play it comfortably.

Here's a thought: what's stopping us from hooking a low latency capture card up to this thing, and playing any existing hardware on a virtual screen? You could essentially give yourself the big screen experience, without the big screen.

Of course, I don't know what kind of latency that would invoke.

It's definitely doable, we had a blackmagic pro here for a while and the delay was good enough to play Bad Company 2 online with. Having it piped into Unity would be where the biggest loss in speed would be, but with an awesome coder it is most certainly doable!

Soon you could life in a shipping container but live in the biggest house in VR with even bigger tvs!

Oh my gosh. I'd totally get a Rift if I could have a virtual 90's world to explore, with videogame shops full of SNES, Megadrive and Gameboy games. A 90s simulator... I'd live in it.

Glad this was made open source. I think I may try to poke in there at some point and play around with some things.

The lack of hands holding the Gameboy kills it for me. Hopefully it gets added in in the future.

This being open source, someone could add the hands in without any major problems.

Shame I don't have a Rift, else I'd play about with it and try to do something like that myself.

How long until Virtual 3DS?

It'll take a while to get any half decent 3DS emulator generally, so a while. Best we have right now can barely play homebrew.

There's a Unity web browser I think. Maybe someone can make a VR web browser room to browse GAF.

What the hell is he doing!?

I'd actually like if the buttons animated as moving to match the player's presses.

I tried this demo with Super Mario World and I remember the screen being gigantic. Like, so big, that while playing I had to tilt my head across the room just to take in the entire display of the virtual TV. It looked great, though, and I think anybody with smaller monitors will definitely prefer playing these games in VR. I'd welcome the option to adjust the size of the screen, though.

But how well can Oculus emulate my parents getting a divorce?!

This won't be complete until we get some fancy shaders that replicate the look and performance of the displays. Then it needs to incorporate a highly accurate emulator like one of Byuu's.

Man, rig up an old gameboy to act as a controller with some sort of motion tracking inside, and add arms/hands to the VR.

I'd totally be down for playing emulated games on a virtual imax screen to give that illusion of a giant ass screen

So I can finally play my Gameboy and be a giant green tiger man in a Bruce Lee jumpsuit?

I've never smelt the bread of heaven before.

It dumb, but in an incredibly awesome way! Nice going man. If FB doesn't totally ruin the Oc.Rift, I wouldn't mins getting one when they got. Bit more mainstream.

I want an virtual scornful mother or father checking in on me occasionally to see whether I'm REALLY doing my homework or if I've somehow found where they hid the AA batteries for the virtual GB. Kinda like Game&Wario's Gamer minigame, only more real.

Or a version where you sit in the backseat of the family car with that other kid that you never really liked but had to play along with.

Now THAT would be the ultimate in nostalgia
and creeping me the fuck out

I'm 28... I don't want any part of that. I have nightmares of this type of thing to this day since I'd play under the covers with a gameboy light and my parents would scare the fuck out of me yelling at me to go to bed.

Bah, chicken. You just couldn't handle the excitement! It made games an estimated 26.3% better on average!
The nightmares will never go away. :(

Also: You had a GB Light? You lucky son of a gun. I had to play my OG GB while somehow holding a flashlight nearby. My eyes ache just thinking about it.

Make a stealth mission where you play gameboy past your bedtime without your parents noticing

Gamepad to play emulator
Keyboard to pull covers over and pretend to sleep.

I don't see any purpose to this... if they could make GameBoy games playable in Oculus Rift in "full screen", it'd be great.

Also, I think this would be great.
Then add some more levels like, stealth GameBoy playing while in class. Keyboard controls to leave the GameBoy somewhere beneath the desk or something.

Interesting. I had to do something kinda like this for a project (not VR but more simulation than emulation of a device). I'd love to see what a more abstract variant could be, like if you really wanted an optimized gameboy experience with a VR helmet (ie just play the game).

Or the exact opposite: Take a gameboy shell, rewire the controls, and put in sensors so it has a position in 3D space. Playing a virtual gameboy while holding a real gameboy!

It has struck me that a really interesting Rift development would be putting cameras in eye positions on the outside of the unit, so Rift software could take in a video feed of outside to put onscreen. It's got interesting augmented reality potential there, and it could put the emulated screen *on the real gameboy*.

But they are, trivially. This is an *interesting* way of handling it.

That is pretty much *exactly* the premise of Gamer on Game & Wario, as posted earlier.

That wouldn't work as well as you are probably thinking. It would be a pain on the eyes. Now if there was the illusion that it was projected on a giant IMAX style theater screen that would be cool. Really tempted in using my free 4 months of Unity Pro to dabble around in this and try something other the usual "play old school games in a bedroom" scenario.
