Mario Kart 8 Sells More Than 1.2 Million Units Worldwide Over First Weekend

All Wii U games I've bought have been $49.99 and under. I realize the going price for games is $59.99...just thought Wii U was different is all.

It is different in the uk anything from £15 - £40 but those Nintendo games hold value forever!

I mean look at the price of second hand DS mario 64, Wii mario etc they hardly lose money at all

I am sorry huggy but i hope the tracks stay free don't want to split your userbase. They can ask money for new characters and karts. I also could live with the way they handle it in Mario golf for 3ds. So you can play those levels only if somebody else bought it and choose that level.

I think there will be enough players that a DLC track lobby should have enough players. It's not like CoD U which would really splinter an already small base.

Good sales. And very well deserved. Hopefully Nintendo has more to announce for the summer months quickly.

It's not. Nintendo prices their games based on their internally perceived value. MarioKart was 60, but WW was 50 and Wario was 40. They are pretty much the only company dong this.

To me, these numbers mean that WiiU has a far wider hardcore base than the Wii.
If so many WiiU users (25% of the WiiU population) bought this game at launch, it means this is a console with a strong base of pure gamers, informed and starved of quality stuff.

Mario Kart Wii had pretty much the exact same week 1 sales. If anything, that means Wii had an equally wide hardcore base, even if it wasn't the same percentage of the total install base.

Yes, Pikmin 3 and Mario 3D World were also $60.

If not mario kart, i hope that they are have already started making some really BIG games for launch...

When I see the water/beach/sunny tracks in MK8 I dream what a Wave Race could look like on Wii U. Sadly it will probably forever stay as a dream..

But yes, they should be launching with better games than they did. Perhaps now they are in the HD zone they will be able to deliver quality like this from launch. However, who knows what form a new Nintendo console would take anyway.

It is really simple, and not really an "argument". My opinion is simply that NSMB U and all the software shown up to launch was not impressive graphically and did not really differentiate Wii U from Wii.

MK8, though obviously not changing core mechanics, truly looks like a true step up from Wii software and being able to highlight MK8 close to launch might have helped the perception of the machine.

That's it. I'm not sure what you want to argue about.

I originally replied to your comment about MK8 would have shown people about "new experiences".

If now you're talking about graphics purely, this wouldnt have done much either, because the problem isn't about how much WiiU game look better than Wii games, but about how they don't look like a big step up from PS3/360 titles. The former would only matter to you if, as I mentioned, you've been completely oblivious to anything else than the Wii.

This and Smash Bros will sell a decent number of consoles come x-mas time. I'm curious if they will reveal stats on what free game was picked most.

Seems to be something they started more recently though seeing at dktf is 50 dollars.
Nintendo's been doing ranges all along.

$59.99
New Super Mario Bros. U
Nintendo Land
Ninja Gaiden III: Razor's Edge
Pikmin 3
The Wonderful 101
Super Mario 3D World
Mario Kart 8

$49.99
Sing Party
Lego City Undercover
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Wii Party U
Wii Fit U
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

$39.99
Game & Wario

$29.99
New Super Luigi U

Nintendo consoles need to launch with one of the following:

3D Mario
Mario Kart
Zelda
Smash Bros

That being said if they take 8-10 months to release another game afterwards like they did with Wii U, that is a fail. They need steady stream of games throughout the console life cycle.

Yep; if they did this the user install base would be large enough for 3rd parties to want to jump on-board & the situation the Wii U has been in for the last 20 months would never have happened.
Mario Kart has hopefully proven to Nintendo that half-assing it isn't the answer; make brilliant games that will wow people and they will buy your product.

Somehow this thread completely passed me by - 1.2 million in 3/4 days is great, I hope they can keep up the momentum and for the love of God keep marketing Mario Kart 8 + all of the other Wii U games too.

There's still confusion about Wii U being a separate system from the Wii. schuelma's saying that if MK8 came out near launch, hopefully the obvious step up in graphics from the Wii would let people know that you really did need to buy a new system to play this game. The *ahem* "leap" from NSMB Wii to NSMB U was not something that was going to give the same impression to people looking at both games.

No PS3 comparison. No 360 comparison. No PS4 comparison. No XB1 comparison. No bloody A, B, C or D.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

When I said "experiences", what I was really referring to was something new. I apologize for the impreciseness.

Mario Kart 8 looks significantly better and, for lack of a better term, "newer", than any other Nintendo title. Hence, in building up hype for launch and beyond, I believe MK8 would have done a much better job than NSMB U which for the most part looked like NSMB Wii in HD.

Part of the problem, as evidenced from sales so far, has been a lack of adoption from the hardcore Nintendo loyalist- those customers I suspect would have been more excited about the system and its future if their first look of the system was MK8 and not 2D Mario.

It'll be pretty jarring to switch gears from 3D World and Mario Kart to... Bayonetta 2 and X lol. So I also hope they've got stuff to provide for those interested in E-rated games, because while Bayo and X will be my kind of game and I'm thankful Nintendo chose to make some games for "seasoned" gamers for the rest of 2014 (to use their own phrase) I know that those who bought the WiiU for games such as Mario titles would need something else to keep them active. So I'm actually most excited to see what the NFC games are going to be and hope those games will be good for the audience that needs "E-rated" games.

And of course I have to say I'm very happy that a good number of people are enjoying Mario Kart 8!
(Maybe they'll want to buy X too? :p)

Happy for MK8. Well deserved.

Even happier that Nintendo actually made an effort and threw money to market the game/console outside of Japan for a change. It's been awhile.

So what are the odds that we see a Nintendo Kart released on the U in a couple years? I can really see it happening.

has polygon said anything about mk 8's sales yet?

Yeah they even doubled down on their previous article:

"Mario Kart 8, the latest entry in Nintendo's kart racing franchise, is the fastest selling Wii U game in the console's history, the company announced today.

- -

Despite the game's rapid sales, Mario Kart 8 is still likely to be one of the worst-selling titles in the franchise's history. For a complete breakdown, check out our analysis piece on Mario Kart.
"

Even after this these clowns are claiming that Mario Kart 8 will likely sell less than 5.47 million (according to their VG Chartz certified sources... please) when all is said and done.

Oh and then Ben Kuchera on Twitter:

Ben Kuchera @BenKuchera · 3h
I love Mario Kart 8: http://www.polygon.com/2014/5/15/5720684/mario-kart-8-mobile-iphone-wii-u-nintendo … But saying it's going to outsell previous titles is likely madness.

It assumes either a 1:1 attach rate to hardware, or a HUGE uptick in Wii U sales. We'll see. The game is amazing, it deserves to be a hit.

I don't even know how he can say something like that with a straight face. I'm not a huge fan of putting people who write about games on a spot like this but seriously now. There's a limit on how ridiculous you can be publicly.

Still not a big fan of that. The experience just is not the same. But that was on different platforms maybe this will work we shall see. In battlefield for example you can't enter servers where they decide only people can enter the server who has bought x dlc even if the dlc isnt in the roulation of maps. So the mario golf solution would be best. Also encourage people to buy it after they have played it to see if it is any good.

It deserves good sales, having a blast playing my buddies copy.

Not totally convinced it's going to sell me a Wii U though, maybe Smash would though.

0 to never going to happen.
If we see another racing game on WiiU from Nintendo, it will be F-Zero.

Wave Race and 1080 are two other dormant racing franchises that probably won't happen (but are still more likely than a "Nintendo Kart").

It'd have to break about 7m (i.e., beat Double Dash) to not be in the worst 3. And to do that, it would need to see a huge uptick in Wii U sales (~6-7m units) to not require anything less than a 1:2 attach rate. I don't see what's wrong with this claim.

Nintendo needs a lot more good multiplayer games on Wii U before it's gonna do that, I think.

ya i was looking up sales for previous mario kart games and its scary when you think about mario kart wii. that game had a 1:3 attach rate on a 100+ million selling console. let that sink in....

I think the fact that Nintendo included F-Zero in NintendoLand gives it a much better chance than any other racer at seeing a revival.
