I think I'm done with IGN.

They always come back...

I believe that you switch between them. The boy has to feed the catbird with barrels of food and traverse the area like Ico did. The catbird seems to follow him if possible. Once the boy gets (similar climbing mechanic like Wanda) on the catbird you control the catbird and can reach areas that the boy couldn't. When you switch back to the boy you can climb of or up if the catbirds head is near a platform or similar. Well that's what I get from the video.
I always got the feeling it was just a fancy level transition cutscene basically. For example, the scene with him riding Trico underwater, I would be very surprised if you're controlling that at all, and that it's not just a way to move you from one area to another.

The trailers don't really show Trico moving through the environment like Yorda did, it seems like it mostly stays in place while you're clearing areas and using switches or whatever.

Right, but I think to keep that mechanic entertaining for 10 hours would require a very large world.

Oh course, I have no basis of comparison. I can't think of another game where you interact with a "realistic" moving giant object in a meaningful way.

Anyway, I think it's possible, just very,,,very difficult. Ueda is approaching SoIaF levels of complication as far as the balancing act he has to do to deliver a meaningful game.

Trico is entirely AI. That was going to be the biggest challenge for them because they wanted to make him like a real animal. Which meant that he wouldn't always obey what the kid wanted him to do. They actually did demo it to journalist at one point and it took several times for the bird to even attempt to perform a certain action and Ueda said something along the lines of "He usually doesn't take this long to obey an order". So finding a balance between avoiding player frustration and realism was going to be key.

It's over, period. IGN lost their last ace, and that's the end of their hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for IGN. IGN has nothing left, nothing they can revise/retitle after e3 tomorrow would fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively visit IGN. Except if they want to believe the hype. Which will also come to Polygon at some point.

IGN Russia took the last reason away that anyone would NEED to visit IGN over polygon (except to induce a Pavlovian adrenaline-rush response), and the cavalcade of tiny "FIRST" reveals that will be nice but won't stir up any clicks is not going to salvage the bloated, overdesigned behemoth that was TLG cancellation article.

There may be some hardcore gamer's that stick around. Some did it for Gamespot. But the last bell tolled. Maybe next decade.

The age of IGN is done.

EDIT: was probably beaten to this by a mile but still :)

This is a thing of beauty.

Well that would be cheap and I doubt that Fueda would be so lazy.
Remember how hard it was to control Agro or Dormin, I guess it is similarly hard to control the catbird.

I'm all for TLG being cancelled/dying. They've been "working" on it so long and we've seen like, 2 trailers right? And No gameplay? All we know is it was about a boy and his gryphon/flying dog and they had to work together to traverse the world/solve puzzles etc. And one of them probably dies at the end/towards the end and you have a section without one of them to hammer in how much they needed each other.

It'd have been cool if it came out and I love Ico and SotC but I'm fine with this game being dead.

This line of thinking is completely alien to me. As long as it's good, why would you want it to not be released? How long or often it's been discussed has no bearing on the quality of the game.

I get kinda pissed off when sites like DualShockers build large audiences by posting bullshit E3 lists and publishing articles about everything thuway tweets. But I know that IGN knows better than to sacrifice credibility for one article, so I feel like there must be more to this story.

I understand that professionally you know many of them and have respect for them, but why do you think IGN is some super credible site? They've constantly posted fucked up false rumours over the years without waiting to confirm it (other posters have earlier already shown examples - the Neil Druckmann story, for example. Metal Gear Triology, for another. Many numerous other articles of this type). You're acting as if their editorial integrity is actually particularly strong. It's not.

That's why there's always this weird disconnect with gamers and journalists - they keep pretending nothing is wrong, when quite friggin' clearly... something is wrong. People are NOT performing their jobs well. And it doesn't do anybody any good to pretend that it's some honest mistake. This was just someone throwing caution to the wind and wanting to get a good story out, and not doing the appropriate job and making sure they tried to get a response out of Sony. Saying the game was OFFICIALLY cancelled in the original headline? Come on, bro. You can explain away a lot of shit, but you can't explain away such shoddy games "journalism." It was just bad behavior.

Oh my Shu retweets... If anyone had doubt's at all, this answers it.

Naturally.

Makes sense. Was there any information about how the boy tells the catbird what to do?

Fuck man, I honestly can't tell what's going on with this game anymore. Sony is constantly saying "it's not cancelled!" yet have shown nothing in, what, 7 years? And to top it all off, it seems that people even on GAF think that this game is still coming. I know a lot of people joke about it, but I've been seeing some that truly think it will come at some point, or even be shown at the conference.

Sony needs to put up or shut up and stop giving people who can't seem to let go some tiny hope to hang on.

But the game never showed him in areas large enough to warrant controlling him. The scenes of the boy on Trico are like Trico climbing a huge thin wall only big enough for him, so it'd be just pushing up on the stick. The swimming bit is similarly small.

It's inelegant to make the player control Trico if there is no freedom in his movement.

I don't understand why some would ban IGN after this. They presumably received info and reported it. That's about it...

Should have tried to confirm it first. And shouldn't be stating the info is "official".

Edit - although I don't necessarily think they should be banned, unless they dig their heels in and act like they are not wrong for doing it.

I had no idea there was an IGN Russia.

also, completely forgot until just now that Jack Tretton left Sony. :\ Hype downgrade for tomorrow's conference.

I know. So what happens if they don't show it at E3 or talk about it, are we supposed to laugh then?

Its the same as with FF15. We will ***** about it not being shown for a short period of time, look up the next most likely date (i.e. TGS) and appropriately hype ourselves for maybe nothing again.

Holy shit, missed the roller coaster.

How in the world did ign decide to run that story and use the work "official"?
Insanity.

the funny thing is that this thread got more replies more than what the last guardian will actually get when its finally announced lol

I was afraid to say anything because im not exactly how the rules work, but what would a site have to do to get banned from Neogaf exactly? and are we allowed to request a banning?

How is it official when the headline reads The Last Guardian May Be Cancelled? Obviously they have sources and those sources are not always correct. Either way it's good news IMO because it just adds extra pressure on Sony to say something about it. Don't we deserve some kind of real official update from Sony instead of saying they laugh at this rumor?

You're actually going to put that game next to The Last Guardian for progress updates?

I think you underestimate The Last Guardian... Hype levels will be huge! People have been waiting for this for years.

What the hell are mods doing with the poll? I am assuming Y2Kev or one of his evil brethren think its funny to change the poll to make it look like more people want the game cancelled?! Seriously not funny. Please stop changing the text in the answers.

They added the "May" after a Sony representative denied the cancellation.

I agree that they shouldn't be banned, but the wording is the problem here. If they'd have posted "IGN has heard from strong internal sources that The Last Guardian has been cancelled and is trying to get clarification from Sony" then that's dilligent reporting. The fact that they went with "The Last Guardian has been officially cancelled" is very poor, though.

Again, I'm a big fan of IGN, and I don't think that it's fair to persecute on a handful of errors. They definitely need to learn from this and the Naughty Dog fiasco, however. Worse still, this is their Editor-in-Chief that reported on this!
