Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

Where is this character's sword?

I don't see a sheath or scabbard on this character at all.

The only weapon I see in this character's possession is a Bow.

Isn't "Link" known for having a Sword and Shield?

Something neither this character has in any of the screens or footage.

The only character I know that used a Bow as a main weapon in the Zelda series is Zelda herself?

Rather then focus on the question of the characters gender, why not discuss why this character is showcased with a Bow as a main weapon and not the typical Sword and Shield combo "Link" is known for.

Some food for thought.

Some people seem to have forgotten that Aonuma teased co-op/multiplayer for Zelda back when they announced WWHD. So maybe we get both Link and Zelda playable.

Look at the seam:

Like I said, it could be a matter of EVERY angle we see of this character being off, but as far as THIS picture is concerned, this Link's hips are undeniably wider than the shoulders.

His torso is turned. So yes, his hips are undeniably wider than his chest is thick.

I don't think that people are saying that this is exactly the same Aryll, but a new Aryll. In the same sense that there are multiple Impas across the length of the series, or how Marin from Link's Awakening shows up as Malon in OoT who then appears again in Minish Cap. The series is really big at bringing back familiar characters in new incarnations.

Ah, duh. That makes sense. I guess because she's only been in one game I had her in my head as "The Aryll" instead of "An Aryll"

Thanks

Why do people want it to be a girl?
Because... why the hell not?

Maleness isn't an intrinsic characteristic of Link. With each game Link has become more and more androgynous/gender neutral. It wouldn't have any effect on the core of the game either way. So why not?

I generally have no problem identifying with female characters so it's no skin off my back.

I thought after decades of JRPG haters bashing androgynous characters most people would've gotten the memo that Japan has a different take on male character designs.

On the topic of fem-Link. I don't like it simply because if there was a female main character I would like more specificity attached to it. P3P was a perfect example. Female characters in games should be more than regex-ing all mention of males and replacing it with female.

I'm a huge JRPG fan and I think this argument is silly.

Link has always had a typical design. He's never looked androgynous. In fact, most JRPG's rarely have androgynous leads. Characters? Yes but leads? No.

I'm thinking this is supposed to be young Zelda maybe? I don't know the lore that well, is there anything that precludes her from retcon adventuring?

I thought "Link" looked very girly off the hop, wouldn't surprise me if they mixed it up. They gave Luigi the spotlight on WiiU, maybe they're giving Zelda her push?

Why do people want it to be a girl?

It's constantly brought up these days, but what are concrete reasons that it would improve the game? Is it primarily for the sake of the medium seeming more inclusive?

I don't care either way if it's a female Link, Zelda, whatever, but I also never understand the desire to turn an established character into something they're not (Black James Bond, Gay Spider-Man, etc.)

Obviously if it's Zelda the previous sentence doesn't eactly apply, but the question stands.

I also don't see how blue eyed/blonde hair person is going to magically turn into Ganondorf by the end of the game or something.

Because a break in convention is nice every once in a while?

Also, calling Link a "established character" is being awfully generous to a guy who says nothing and is basically no one, and is also not one entity, but several entities across various worlds/times/eras.

Also, it's rather weird that you draw the line on James Bond at race. James Bond has to be white?

It might not improve the game, but female protagonists are pretty rare. It's nice to have more of them.

A sword and shield are shown but they're attached to the horse. What's interesting is why they decided to show the character using a bow and not those two.

Either a very young boy or a female. His/her body shape is way too feminine to be a young boy tho.
I think that body shape is almost an exact match for a prepubescent boy... Or girl. Kids are supposed to be androgynous. And that to me looks like a young kid.

A guy with curves like these?
Back is arched up because the character is looking up... Those aren't really curves.

Hell yeah! Still a chance Aunoma goes with a cool design for once for link! {Pst, Aunoma, smash or even the musou game design would be fine!]

Gonna say, early part of the game, character doesn't have the master sword yet but has been trained in using bows to hunt and whatnot in all that sweet sweet wildneress.

I liked the music in the chase scene. Reminded me of those old timey silent pictures where they added piano music.

Aonuma is a master troll and understands his fanbase way better than I realized.

Maybe it's Link disguised as a Woman!

:O
Padding!

Drag Queen Link, yas GAWD!

This is what happens when you have no real info to disclose for an unfinished game. :p

DQ Link could teach Courtney Act a thing about padding. ;)

...he literally has a wad of fabric wrapped around his waist in that shot.

His hips are CLEARLY narrower than his should when he puts on his traditional "Link: outfit.

If they actually unfetter the Link concept and make it a Maiden killing the dragon they have my money. Would be my first nintedno console since my gamecube.

Ya know, Link is also built like a 10 year old girl, so I don't think body shape is the greatest indicator when it comes to character designs from Japan. Some of those Guilty Gear characters amiright?

Plus as we all know, Link isn't blonde... he has pink hair.

I simply can't be swayed either way. It could easily be a girl, but knowing Japan it could also be an androgynous guy. He/She/It looks like Link, be it a female or male character. The character just has a different look.

The video isn't exactly conclusive.

If it's Aryll, where is this game set? Despite the obvious Wind Waker styling and wardrobe, it's obviously not set in the Wind Waker Great Sea area...

If it's the "Era without a Hero", it could be a "hero" who wasn't able to defeat Ganon on his own, but was able to do enough to save the world leading into Divine action leading to the Wind Waker. That setting could easily have a character that isn't "explicitly Link" that isn't Zelda either. I feel like I would love a setting/story in that time period.

Maybe the "Hero" of the Wind Waker timeline now just wears that blue shirt.

It's too early to tell, and that statement is too vague to suggest a specific character. It's purposefully vague. Keep the hype train chugging along.

He has gotten better, remember his ridiculous attempt to troll with Fi. "This character is very important and notice Link has no sword" What a terrible attempt to keep a character shrouding in mystery, everyone figured out she was the sword right away lol. He has done some subtle Majora's Mask trolling this year too.

I'm pretty sure the protagonist in the trailer is left-handed; I know that he or she holds the bow in his or her left hand.

You hold the bow in your left-hand if you are right-eye dominant, which is often linked to being right-handed. Link usually holds his bow in his right hand and draws with his left, since he is left-handed and left-eyed. We also know this character is right-eye dominant since he/she squints with his/her left eye while aiming.
