Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain E3 Full Gameplay Demo [Up: NEW official version!]

Games are supposed to be ya know, fun above anything else. If the gameplay isn't fun, then everything else is for nothing.

I didnt mean fun in the sense of fun to play. Obviously the game is suppose to be fun to play :) but making "fun" out of every situation is what has ruined MGS for me. I want the game to have a serious tone, like MGS for PS1 :)

That was the best MGS to date, it had everything, gripping story and you actually felt like you were on a kick ass, life or death mission to save the world. It was serious and dark.

What's the real purpose of upgrading your Mother Base though?

One aspect is that it's tied to the unlocks and equipment that you can use while in the field. We saw the player research the cardboard box and then have one airdropped in for him. No doubt that will all cost money so you'll need the people and research facilities for it. Things like calling in an airstrike will require resources too.

Missed most of it but what I caught looked incredible.

Very much looking forward to a direct feed. Should I come back and check here or will a new thread be made?

Question still stands.
Are you still in this thread for lil old me? Everything you just saw makes you still say it looks boring? Yes, it's your opinion, congrats on having one. I happen to think it's a shitty one. How you can look at an open world game providing you a go anywhere, do anything option along side the best stealth available in quite some time, going by Ground Zeroes mechanics, is beyond me. Add the hilarity/absurdity of the Fulton, the box, the mother base stuff and all the little things Kojima throws in his game to make sure it's loaded with content and I'm curious how you don't think the onus is on you to shed some light on such an absurd statement as "it looks boring". Go ahead.

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Yabuki turned off voice chat in Mario Kart races. True artists of their time.
Great presentation. Really can't wait for this game.

Wow, watching the stream on twitch, I realize I REALLY don't understand much japanese.

But the was she said "Daomando Dogusu Badgu" was too cute.

Sounds good, it'd be nice if it factored into the rest of the game more/had more gameplay ramifications.

But a glorified, huge trophy room to explore and chill sounds fun too.

I think they'll definitely have something meta going on with Mother Base in TPP. With Peace Walker it was very much limited by the power of the PSP, so it was mostly menu driven, but even then they did have some cool stuff towards the end of the game where they used some of the stuff in actual gameplay. It was mostly just a visual touch to personalize the final parts of the game, but it was a nice thought. For TPP I think they'll probably go much further, especially with online stuff being a possibility. I'm pretty excited.

Cool stuff, it looks like a natural transfer of the crazy stuff you could do in MGS3 into an open world environment.

I noticed that the Jackie Tan character in the game wore the same outfit as Quiet while being drowned by that soldier, so she's definitely a POW. Maybe it's been known but it's the first time I noticed the connection.

Now that you say that, my new theory on Quiet is this:

Big Boss is tasked with rescuing Quiet in a story mission, just as he was tasked with rescuing Miller, Paz and Chico before. He ultimately recruits her and she becomes a member of Diamond Dogs. Later, she attempts to assassinate Big Boss and it's found out that she was a put there in Afghanistan by Cipher to be recruited in the first place. That's what ultimately leads to the torture scene.

Ah! Very cool, love the idea. :)

I have not played Ground Zero, but it must have been pretty bad then, cause there was so many pop ins all over in this demo. Not that it didn't look awesome anyway... and of course there is time to improve it.

and even when he was just walking towards that base you could see everything popping in and out of detail levels, which made everything in front look like it was moving around.

Damn that's bad I always thought it was just bad in GZ because I was playing it on 360

It is not an open-world-game though. Alt least not in the GTA-sense. It is a linear game with missions in an open world. You can not ignore those missions. It seems like you will not be able to free-roam - at least not while playing the story. I asked Kojima about this at E3 and he pointed out that any given mission sets limits to the player. In the shown example the player could wander off to explore, but Miller will be executed within three days of ingame-time. Then the mission is failed. Kojima pointed out the freedom of how to approach a mission is the big thing for him, not the freedom to explore the world.

I'm sure not all missions will have a time limit, in ground zeroes I went off and did random stuff for a couple hours during one mission once.

What he say about GTA?

No. The oil rig, aka Big Shell, in MGS2 isn't built until 2009, this is just a similar looking base, and you can customize the color to something other than orange.

Sweet, I doubt they'd give you lotsa customization options, it looked so big.

This actually reminds me of the first Mercenaries game, with the open world elements and guard routines, resource collection and off-map support and supply drops. I played that game as much like this demo as I could at the time. I know it was all about the free form destruction., but that didn't get in the way of me plotting out my incursion and extraction plans through binoculars from a mountain across the way before queuing up in the most cost-effective support options ;p

That and I got hints of what I loved best about the first Assassin's Creed. Not the army fighting, swashbuckling mass murder shit the series gets into these days, but the quieter, and more clever assassination stealth game with escapes.

I'm going to be so damn hooked on this. :)

Building a Base/Nation is the most logical step for this series and Big Boss' arc. That they actually make it a gameplay element is really amazing.

MGO beta would be awesome, played MGO more that MGS4.

YES! Same here. That Destiny Alpha really helped with the promotion/marketing of that game. Think of what a beta will do for MGO/TPP. (not that Metal Gear needs anymore promotion). We should get a BETA to help us with the loooong ass wait for TPP.

Best way to start the day. Loved the open ended approach to missions.

So you CAN invade other players Mother Bases and have them invade you? Its not just wishful thinking from posters?

So it's basically a bunch of Hitman-style non-linear stealth levels interspersed between lots of barren desert and tiny outposts.

Why is everyone commenting on Snake being silent? What's the last MGS you played where Snake speaks during gameplay? Holding up a guard is the only time I can think of (and he even does it in this gameplay)

What's the real purpose of upgrading your Mother Base though?

The more soldiers you have the more GMP you have (a virtual resource you use reflecting how strong your militia is ) and the more cooks/physicians/supplies you need to keep running. The more GMP you have the more you can research. The more you research the more you need Intel to make advancements. The bigger your army grows and the more supplies and vehicles you have the more space you need.
