Cross-buy for 3DS -> Wii U (but not vice-versa) now possible only in Europe

I hope the VC will do be like that at some point... I've been spoiled rotten by Sony and the PS1 Classics being playable on three different platforms, and the PSP games working on PSP and Vita.

I don't care as long as this doesn't apply to Virtual Console titles.

I vastly prefer to see this coming for brand new games (indie games, for example) than old games I've already played, honestly
But I'd be happy to see N doing this for their VC titles, of course.

There's not really a lot of crossover releases between both Wii U and 3DS I thought, but it's good this is now a thing. Would have been so much better if it applied to Virtual Console titles also tho.

Seeing as Sal Romano leaked that Smash 4 was gonna get character DLC, I can see why Nintendo decided to add Cross Buy now.

True. We need confirmation to this.

This is from NoE PR:

Squids Odyssey (The Game Bakers) - €12.99/£9.99
Squids Odyssey is a unique mix of action strategy and RPG: build your team of Squid heroes for epic turn-based battles against corrupted crabs and shrimps! Steev and the rest of the Squids are in danger! An infectious black ooze is corrupting their world. The band of unlikely heroes need to fight back to save their kingdoms!
Special offer:
If you downloaded Squids Odyssey on Nintendo 3DS, you can download Squids Odyssey from Nintendo eShop on Wii U for free! (Your Wii U and Nintendo 3DS must be linked with the same Nintendo Network ID.)

I'm adding this to the OP.

The way it's worded sound lweord because the Wii U version is already available on the eshop since a couple of weeks, while the 3DS one will be available this week. So, let's wait for details about how it works (will I be forced to download it on the 3DS first?)

I don't think that Smash will be crossbuy at all. They are two different games, in terms of contents and engines, and assets, and so on. I can see a cross-promotion tough, considering that they already did great cross(game/platfrom) promotions for digital purchase recently (the W101 30% off with Pikmin, the Free game with MK8, the Pushmo World discount). Maybe in Smash DLC characters could be cross-buy, even if the games aren't?

Come on its not like i would handle it - but im just saying thats how Nintendo thinks. I just cant see them introducing VC cross buy now when the only mayor plattform 3DS/WiiU share are NES. And not all 3DS NES games are on WiiU, they might wait for their unified architecture successors.

You are absolutely right, i was just thinking this weekend that Shovel Knight would have been the perfect games to introduce Cross-Buy and how NIntendo can be so backwards when it comes to using their system synergies.

Ah i see. Then yeah I agree from Nintendo's standpoint they wouldnt do it because they are the least consumer friendly of the big three when it comes to digital purchases. I dont believe they ever will because now would be the best time to do it. There are only NES games which are shared and are all relatively cheap and few in number. If they arent willing to do it with these VC games I have no faith they will with more expensive games.

Not that they'd ever do it 'cos money, but it would be amazing if Smash Bros. had this. I mean bare minimum they need to do the Virtual Console.

Smash bros is being programmed as two different games almost, not just a straight port so I'd understand completely if they didnt do cross buy for that. But yeah theres no excuse not to for VC other than greed. Making people double dip on games that are over 2 decades old is disgusting.

Honestly, it's only a matter of time before this becomes a system-wide thing. I'm sure they are working on it.

To be fair - it was possible since they introduced the nnid on the 3ds. Its up to the publisher to give you a free copy of a game, not Nintendo. Publishers are in charge of their price and sales in the eshop.
Go and ask them for shovel night. ^^

How many games release on both 3DS and WiiU ? I have the feeling that Vita-PS4-PS3 share much more games, especially indies and AA first-party (Sly, PSABR, Ratchet, GoW Collection) than 3DS and WiiU (Smash Bros, a few indie ?)

Smash Bros. on Wii U is different than the 3DS version.

Availability is at the discretion of each game's publisher it seems.

Speaking of which how many Nintendo games are there that have potential for cross-buy?

That Squids game isn't either?

No, it isn't.
the fact is that I don't understand why people is calling out Nintendo for the Cross-buy addition. It's up to the developer

That's two versions of the same game basically, there are exclusives stages & modes and a small artistic change but in the end it's the same gameplay, characters, moveset, etc...

they have different engines, assets, and almost everything. they developed two games, they'll sell two games.
I'd be totally in for a cross-promotion or cross-buy dlc but it's crazy to pretend they'll give you two brand new games (system sellers probably) for the cost of one.
Should they have gift you with a free MK8 version because it shares the concept with MK7?
Because the differences among Smash 3DS and Wii U are the same (different modes, stages, ecc...)

Kind of hoping that it's not forcing to buy the 3DS version first, as I want to get some DDP from buying the Wii U version.

EDIT: For those saying Smash, it's not going to happen. They are two different games.

glad to heard people isn't stupid anymore
Ok, I'm gonna buy Squids Odyssey just to support this cause. Nintendo should have been the first there, with the VC console.

It's up to the developer now, apparently. You're acting like this is old hat. Maybe I missed some announcement? And "people" are saying Nintendo because they ultimately shape the policies on digital distribution on their platforms. It just remains to be seen what gets the green light.

Well, except for the roster, everything is different.
Two versions of the same game would be an hyperbole I think, for a reason, mainly because it's having that much of a différence that it could have been branded under a different name.

Woah. Not bad at all. I wonder if a lot of games are going to start supporting this, or just those rare few. It'd be especially great on Virtual Console games.

I don't see why this a confirmation for "cross-buy".. I mean promotions like this have been done before: If you bought Pushmo you get Pushmo World for less... only this time it's "for free"... I don' t think Nintendo has changed its minds. We will still have to pay for each VC-game separately.

I think people are happy to see the technical confirmation that it is possible.

what's the difference between "cross-buy" and "promotion"? cross-buy is a promotion. It's not an infrastructure itself, but a possible consequence of an infra-structure. In fact also on PS systems it's not mandatory (it would be crazy to force a developer to apply this rule, to me) and some games have it and other don't.
I know that we already had cross-platform promotion with Pushmo: in fact I pointed out this a lot, but GAF ignored it, as if the NNIND was still useless, while that was the first real link between a 3DS and a Wii U ownership, born after the NNIND link they started few months ago.
Point is that with this promotion (if confirmed, even if it's on their PR, and especially if confirmed in both way, so not being forced to buy the 3DS version first, otherwise those who already downloaded the Wii U version would be screwed) we have the final demonstration that the cross-buy promotion IS available, so it will be up to a case-by-case situation to decide to offer it or not

Now if only they could introduce this for VC, would love to download some snes classics on 3ds and share saves states by connecting two wirelessly.

Still waiting on them to join every other DLC merchant in existence by tying purchases to accounts only and not hardware. Come on Nintendo, how hard is it?!

So you mean this hasn't been done before? Your posts doesn't make any sense at all.

- Getting a discount is not a cross-buy.
- Pushmo and Pushmo World are both different games.

This is a confirmation that it's technically possible to do on current Nintendo systems, which is a good thing. And in this case it's cross-buy in every sense of the word. No idea what you're talking about. But I guess there will always be people acting negatively in positive Nintendo news threads.
