What IS Under Night In-Birth?
It is an original fighting game franchise from the developers of Melty Blood and Ragnarok Battle Offline. More information about how UNIB came to be in this interview.
Also French Bread interview with 4gamer detailing their UNIEL plans, if you read it, they have followed their guidelines closely. UNIEL Steam will probably come in the future.

Previous to Under Night In-birth Exe: Late, UNIEL was simply known as Under Night In-Birth (UNI or UNIB) It was heavily known as a garbage game run rampant with combos of long length (including the infamous Linnefinite) and unforgiving for defending players, one knockdown usually meant death. A lot of adjustments were made from UNIB to UNIEL to fix it and I say without bias that they've done really well to correct issues with the first version.

Some important changes from UNIB to UNIEL

From a glance; more defensive options have been given to players, proration has been added to stop long combos, and overall flow is not one knockdown into death. To further demonstrate this here is comparison footage between Linne in the first version of Under Night and Linne in the updated version.

Linnefinite in UNIB VS Linne in UNIEL

The year is 20xx. The people are living in the Information Age. Those living at the center of IT start to notice an ever so slight transition. Technology is progressing rapidly, all phenomenons from the beginning of science are being traced, and the majority of society today believe that “in this era, there isn’t a single mystery”. Even still, the fact that people gossip does not change. In the past few years, a new rumor has suddenly appeared: “The man-eating shadow"

Among students, another rumor exists of the “hollow night”. A large pitch-black shadow envelops, the nearby lights go out, and a sense of being engulfed by deep darkness. Being devoured by the shadow, you lose your soul. Those people will wander the “hollow night” for eternity, and their lives will end. A mysterious incident of an old yet ridiculed legend. There can be no explanation, aside from the likes of magic or curses. That is the extent of these mysterious incidents coming one after another.

“How stupid… to talk of being spirited away in this day and age…” Hyde’s friends dismiss these rumors. Despite this denial, tired from the daily tedium, one person felt an attraction to this strangeness.

Going back home on the same route every day. Thinking things like that, he is suddenly crushed. Far away he sees a large humanoid shadow, rapidly getting closer. The eerily shining eyes stood out to him. Suddenly, he is assaulted with discomfort. His steps tremble. The scenery is mudded black. —The unknown “night” has come for him. A black “something” coils around him, with a sense of his entire body being absorbed. The strength in his body leaving him, as he falls onto the asphalt, A slender arm rises to hold him.

“—Sheesh, pay attention to where you’re walking.”

From the darkness, he can faintly hear a womanly voice he doesn’t know. From where the arm extends is a short girl with plain clothes. In her arm, a clumsily big sword. With her plain clothes, this girl who looked like a boy, taking him with her, she cut down the “darkness” around him. That day, at that place, that is the last thing he saw. * With his conscience fading rapidly, there were many things he wanted to hear. He spoke of what was most important for him to know.

“You… who on earth are you…?”

“Oh… so you could still talk. That’s good. How long will you spout nonsense for? If you want to live and go back home, stand up. If you can’t stand up, I’ll leave you behind. "

“Don’t joke around.” He couldn’t help but raise his voice. Using all of his strength, he stood up without her help. It’s fine if he could just stand, as he thought something pathetic like that, those two left that place. That is how those two met. Their story begins to move here—

TUTORIALS
UNIEL BEGINNER'S WORKSHOP
Leisure Land Akihabara had a Workshop for UNIEL. This was translated by Sourenga who maintains the Under Night In-Birth English Wiki.
It is highly recommended to watch the workshop, the running time is about an hour. It is required viewing for anyone looking to get into UNIB. The demonstrators go through the game flow and main systems of the game. Essentially UNIB revolves around gaining GRD and the GRD system can be thought of as a "Tug of War". Both good offense and defense are rewarded and while the attacking player is generally at an advantage a defending player can bide their time with good predictions and solid fundamentals to make it "their turn". If an attacking player has predictable blockstrings, the defending player can Shield these attacks, reduce the frame advantage of the attacking player and begin their counterattack, thus initiating their turn. To combat Shield, attacking players "mix up" Throws and Assault to confuse the defender and keep on the attack. Defending players have to predict the right action, but the workshop demonstrates a technique that answers to both Throws and Assault in one action called an "option select". When successfully teching a throw attempt the defending player has an 8 frame advantage, this is quite a large gap in which the opponent may not move. And Assault is cleanly countered resulting in the defending player on the attack now. The option select is quite potent but has counters as well, but it is up to the attacking player to read the opponent. Finally, Chain Shift literally shifts momentum to the player who activates it. It is awarded to the winner of the "Tug of War".
OFFICIAL UNI HOW TO PLAY
UNIB Tutorial Part 1 | UNIB Tutorial Part 2
For the 7/18 update, French Bread put out two tutorial videos and they have been translated. The length is palatable & goes over some nuances not in the workshop or OT.
BASIC ACTIONS - Before going in-depth with the GRD system some key moves that you will need to know in order to fight at a basic level.
  • Guarding - Holding ◄
Blocking is essential in any fighting game. Overheads need to be blocked standing, Low attacks must be blocked crouching. Characters have ways of changing the properties of their attacks, some attacks become overheads or even unblockable, so keep this in mind. It should be noted that UNIB is centered around controlling space on the ground. Nearly all normals performed on the ground are not Air-Blockable or even Air-Shieldable. It is possible to Air Block but very few attacks have this property so jumping in is a commitment. There is chip/block damage however it is not possible to kill this way. SO NEVER GIVE UP.
Also of interest because some players may not be familiar with Melty Blood, this game has "cross up prevention". I recommend reading this in order to get a better understanding.
  • Smart Steer - A > A > A > A...
Smart Steer is UNI's version of Auto Combo, by simply pressing A repeatedly characters will perform a basic combo.
  • Passing Link - Freely chained normals
For players familiar with Melty Blood's Reverse Beat, players may chain normals either from Weak to Strong or Vice Versa. For example 5A > 2B > 6C or 2C > 2B > 2A. The same move cannot be repeated in a single string with some exceptions. Smart Steer is not affected by Passing Link restrictions. Basic strategy with Passing Link is to end blockstrings with weak attacks because they have the least recovery. This is useful when gauging your opponent and trying to make them use a desperate attack or reversal and punishing them for it. Ending strings with weak attacks also leave the opponent in prime position for a throw. Delaying chained normals is also necessary for some follow ups in combos and is a good way for setting up Counter Hits.
  • Increase - (Holding Down A or B or C) Sometimes annotated with "[ ]"
Each character has certain attacks that can be charged by holding down their respective button. This changes the properties of the attack it would normally have. For example Eltnum's ►+B (Or 6B) is an overhead kick, it's a vital part of her strategy to "open up" an opponent's guard. When charged it is easier to combo from and also allows her to continue combos on airborne opponents since it causes the opponent to bounce.
  • Dash - ►► or ►+(A+B)
When you want to approach the opponent quickly, some characters have potent dash attacks and different properties
  • Back Dash - ◄◄ or ◄+(A+B)
When you want to evade an opponent's attack or create space between yourself and your opponent
  • Force Function - B+C
Character specific move that consumes 1 GRD Block to use but can be used with no GRD. Force Function can be cancelled from normals but not special moves.
  • Throws - ◄+(A+D) or ►+(A+D)
Each character has different throw ranges, all throws have 4 frame startup. It is possible to extend the reach of the throw by using it after a dash. Input dash and hold down the A, and when you get close to the opponent press D. Weak normals may be cancelled into Throws however if the opponent is in blockstun, a gold flash appears and the opponent has 29 frames to input Throw Tech. Gold Throws also apply to Command Grabs. If you throw an opponent before their attack comes out they are surrounded by a red aura, this signifies a Counter Throw which can't be teched.
When an opponent attempts a Throw you have 14 frames to input A+D to escape the grab attempt. Successfully teching a throw brings up "TECH HIT" in the Status Indicator and you have 8 frames of advantage on your opponent.
  • Recovery/Tech/Ukemi - (Holding Down A/B/C During an opponent's combo)
When an opponent is following up their attacks during their combo it is possible for them to mistime their follow up attacks or "drop their combo" so it's important to know how to tech and during which state. "RECOVER" will show up in the Status Indicator.
    • Ground - When in a knocked down state hold ◄+(A/B/C) to roll backwards or simply A/B/C to neutral tech.
    • Aerial - When in an airborne state hold ◄+(A/B/C) to recover backwards. ►+(A/B/C) to recover forward. Or simply A/B/C to neutral recover. You are invincible until touching the ground but cannot act before that.
    • Blow-off - When the opponent uses an attack that wallbounces it is possible to hold the joystick in any direction and press (A/B/C) before hitting the wall to stop the wallbounce.
    • Slam - By pressing ▼ on the Directional Stick or Pad with the right timing before being slammed to the wall or to the ground it is possible to recover.
EXS ACTIONS - This section is all related to the GRD Grid as above in the HUD. So it's important to know what affects the GRD Grid and what the pay off is for having more GRD than your opponent.
  • Vorpal - Player with the most GRD blocks when the TS Gauge has filled gains Vorpal.
    bXESCVOd

If you've been noticing the GRD Grid in the headers this is what you want. Your side of the GRD GRID Shines indicating you have Vorpal and your character is surrounded by a blue aura. For the duration of Vorpal, damage is increased 10%
  • Chain Shift - D > D (Press D Twice in quick succession)
Chain Shift is the most important tool in this game and it can be utilized for both offense and defense. Make sure to use it while in Vorpal state Senaru won the Over the World National Championships with this
    • Usable only in Vorpal state
    • You gain EXS depending on the number of GRD blocks you have
    • Activating Chain Shift stops time briefly
    • Can be used to cancel your own attacks. There are many Chain Shift only combos
One block of GRD is worth 20 EXS, so by filling your own side of the Grind Grid you can gain up to 120 EXS. However if you use Chain Shift to cancel an attack, the amount of EXS you gain will decrease. Also, you won't gain additional EXS by invading your opponent's side of the Grind Grid. 120 EXS is the maximum you can gain through the Chain Shift.

Assault has higher input priority than Chain Shift, make sure not hold the stick/pad forward while inputting the command.
  • Gaining GRD
You gain GRD by walking forward, Dashing, using Assault, hitting with an attack, after Recovery, Blocking, Shielding and by using Concentration.
  • Losing GRD
You lose your GRD when you run backwards, when you take damage, when your attacks are blocked with Shield, when the opponent escapes from your throw, and when the opponent uses the Concentration.
  • Concentration - Holding Down D
Your character begins to glow and gain GRD, if Concentration is held past the 30th frame the opponents GRD begins to drain. You are completely vulnerable during Concentration.
  • Assault - ►+(D) - Can be performed in the air with ►+(D) or ►+(A+B)
Assault is a "command air dash". Assault's movement arc and speed is relative to you and your opponent and "homes" in on their position. Use of Assault is rewarded with a 1/2 GRD block. Assault has complete invincibility against throws.
Start up of Assault has a short period where you can't do anything, but after that you can normally use aerial normals and specials. Aerial moves done during Assault work as high-speed overheads. Moves that are normally blockable low become highblock only on a per move basis.

Assault's biggest risk is that you can't do aerial block or Shield during it. Other demerit is moves done during Assault have scaled damage. Also, any moves used during the ground version of Assault become completely uncancelable. You'll be left wide open if the opponent blocks your attack. This rule doesn't apply to the aerial version of Assault. This means that when you use aerial Assault, you can freely cancel attacks.
  • Shielding ◄+D - Air OK
More powerful form of blocking. Aerial Shield can be used to block aerial moves that aren't normally air-blockable. Successful Shielding is shown with a blue effect. You gain a GRD bonus from successfully Shielding a move and the opponent's GRD decreases. GRD bonus from Shielding is decreased while in Vorpal state.

Recovery from the ground Shield is 3 frames faster than normal guarding and aerial Shield is 6 frames faster than aerial block. Aerial Shielding a move increases recovery time of the attacker and their move becomes totally uncancelable, leaving them wide open. Case in point, Seth punishes Eltnum's J.C after Aerial Shield

While Shielding you are unable to Throw Escape. If you are thrown during Shield it'll automatically result GRD Break, so be careful.
    • Guard Shield - Performing Shield while already blocking
This version of Shield uses 10 EXS and Shields the next move the opponent does after you input the command. Successful Guard Shield is shown with a green effect. It has the all the same effects as normal Shield, but will push the opponent further away than normal. If you fail the Guard Shield, you'll pay for it with 1 GRD block.
  • Guard Thrust - ▼◣◄+D
Guard Thrust is an invincible guard cancel move you can use while blocking an attack. There are two ways to activate the move:
    1. If you're in Vorpal state, you can consume the condition to use Guard Thrust.
    2. If you're not in Vorpal state, you can use 100 EXS to use Guard Thrust which will result in GRD Break state
  • GRD Break
During this status actions like Shield and Assault become unusable. Players with GRD Break can't enter Vorpal state even if they had more GRD blocks than the opponent.
    1. If you use the wrong type of Shield to block an attack, your guard will break and you'll end up in a GRD Break state.
    2. If you are thrown during your Shield attempt you will be put into GRD Break.
    3. You can also get this state by using Guard Thrust or Infinite Worth EXS attack.
White line between your EXS Enhance and the Grind Grid shows the time left to recover from the GRD Break. Remaining time can be decreased by successfully guarding the opponent's attacks. Activation of the Veil Off also cancels GRD Break, so you can get rid of the status with 100 EXS.
  • Veil Off - A+B+C (When EXS is 100+%)
When you activate this state all the EXS you possess at that moment will slowly deplete. During the Veil Off timer you can freely use moves that consume EXS. This makes it possible for you to combo EX moves with Infinite Worth moves that's normally impossible. GRD you gain from actions like Concentration and Shielding is also increased during the Veil Off

Veil Off activation is completely invincible and blows back the opponent if it hits so you can use it to escape from the opponent's pressure. Hitting the opponent with Veil Off causes GRD Break and also gives you one free GRD block . Veil Off has 22 frames of start-up. Veil Off burst is -13 frames on block. Damage you deal will rise by 20% during the Veil Off. This combined with Vorpal state leads to 30% more damage. It is also possible to combo into Veil Off but opponent does not enter GRD Break
COUNTERS
Counter hit occurs when your attack interrupts the opponent's attack. Usually when your attack has faster start-up or when the opponent is still recovering from their own action. If you interrupt the opponent's special move with anything besides a Weak attack, then it becomes a High Counter.

When you get a counter hit, it changes the properties of your combo and the length of hit stun on your attack. A regular Counter hit has 1.5 x and High Counter has 2 x longer hit stun than normal. Counter also makes it possible to pick downed opponent's for even longer combos. If you land a Counter hit during Assault, damage compensation value will be nullified and you can actually deal pretty good damage even if you hit with a light attack.

Counter hit can also change the opponent's recovery options. like becoming air untechable. Be mindful of these properties when following up combos and minimizing your opponent's options.

I'm interested in a lot of characters in this game. Can't decide whether to start with Hyde, Orie, Vatista, or Eltnum.

While I'm committed to learning Eltnum first, you pretty much listed the 4 characters I want to try out lol

They just seem the most appealing from looks for me.

Planning on prioritizing Yuzuriha and Orie following the US release. Will have a look at the differences with this new version in the meantime.

Looking forward to this! Going to be playing Eltnum.

All of this game's systems like GRD, Assault, Guard Thrust... pretty overwhelming after pretty much only playing ArcSys and Capcom games :S

Combo tutorials and good netcode is all I ask for. Also, great job with the OT.

Every time I see new characters get teased or added, it breaks my heart because it's not Filia. When's Filia? Give me Filia!

With that said, I'll still be grabbing this on day 1 from PSN. I loved Melty Blood and French Bread can do no wrong by me.

Think of Assault as "homing" that doubles as a short hop. Guard Thrust is like an alpha counter or Dead Angle, but has a penalty if you don't have Vorpal.

GRD is pretty unique, but actually besides that the focus is the ground game. Jump ins are risky so approaching your opponent with smart pokes is the ideal until you score a knockdown. You want to control the match until you have access to Chain Shift, then you can afford to be more aggressive since you can react to your opponent with Chain Shift and shut down their next move.

Aww man, I was expecting the OT subtitle to be a joke about black things. Although they really did buff Eltnum in the transition from MB to UNIEL (although Type-Moon body proportions are all screwed up in general). And why is the old Team Sp00ky logo on the box art you put up? :x

No tutorials or combo challenges at all, to my knowledge. As for the netcode, it was handled by ArcSys so it should be OK, although it could be a lot better (when's GGPO???)

Every time I see new characters get teased or added, it breaks my heart because it's not Filia. When's Filia? Give me Filia!
I asked one of the Skullgirls developers about this once and all I got back was argle-bargle. Maybe French Bread realized that the data is cursed and threw it into the center of the sun.

Really looking forward to this game. Planning on trying Yuzuriha first, but a few other characters look interesting, like Eltnum and Orie.

UNREAL BLACK THINGS was quickly shut down. the title went through quite a few suggestions. And I only did the OT because no one else wanted it =x
Because it's a throwback to Melty players =)

Man I gotta play this at my local meet up place to get the feel of it. If I like it that much I'll probably get it.

Subbed, Loved Melty Blood for many years, and I am sure I will love this one too. Thanks for the Tutorial links and such, need to study the system mechanics.

EDIT: LOL! Just read Sions story on the wiki. xD

Good OT. This has been the ANIME FYTAN game that I've been waiting to play (even a bit more than XRD), so I'm looking forward to this.

This game became really interesting to me once I watched the primer and understood the GRD system.

I am also excited for the ULTIMATE PARTY ANIMAL DEATH MACHINE:

Fantastic OT. Subscribed.

I'm probably waiting for the English release but I'm still really intrigued by this game, it seems cool. When I eventually do pick it up I'm most interested in Hyde and the weird stretchy limbs guy, while my roommate/training partner is super psyched for Waldstein.

This is a superb OT! Thanks very much! I've started paying attention to this game very recently, and I am really liking the way this game looks. I remember playing Melty Blood: Act Cadenza and liking it, so I think I'll like this game too.

I really, really like the GRD/grind gauge mechanic this game introduces. I really like the concept of it; every fifteen/twenty seconds the player who had the best offense or the best defense is granted a damage bonus, as well asthe ability to perform a GG style roman cancel, and the ability to perform a free guard cancel should you need to. It's a mechanic that actively rewards the player for playing well, and I really like it.

Also, I like the character designs. Particularly, I really like Merkava. I think he's got a really good alien design, so I'll be playing him. I'll also play Waldstein, but funnily enough, he's got the one design that I don't like in this game. I think his big claw gauntlets look ridiculous, but since he has a really good looking moveset for a grappler, I'll be playing him.

Now I need to look into making a Japanese PSN account. I want to download this game first thing.

Came for game & stayed for the thighs because man can't survive on bread alone!

Very well said, Triple Da God.

I would even play on a pad and unbox my ps3 for this

But the same shit happened to me with P4U on 360 (bought a ntsc console just for it) since i had zero people to play with online in the end

Goddamnit, my Merkava ç_ç

Great OT. I'm torn between playing Gordeau and Seth, but from all accounts Gordeau is pretty busted so I'll likely ride with Seth. Hearing him referred to as "Gordeaunoe" doesn't really fill me with excitement.

Super hyped for the console release of Unreal Black Things. Haven't been this hyped since EXVS Full Boost.

... Maybe I'll actually play the game online this time.
