Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) | OT | Hey Dude, This Is NO Cartoon

I really hope I eat my words on this movie, I was afraid it would be a gritty reboot focusing on the humans and with the turtles getting nearly no screen time, but now it's starting to look like a real turtles movie. I even like that they gave donny more of a nerdy personality since he was the most boring before.

Very well said.

Is the Nick TMNT series really good ? I didn't pay much attention to it, but what I've seen seemed very much geared towards kids; c'est-à-dire: not for me. I'm open to the idea of changing opinion.

It is a show made with love.

Lots of care for animations, details and references to obscure stuff

It's a Nick movie, it'll probably be super lighthearted.

I stopped being a fan of TMNT around the time that live action show came out. Not because of it, mind you. Just grew out of it, if you will.

But the leaks of these turtle designs brought me back in. I went out and purchased the blu-ray 3 pack of the original films and even started watching the Nick series (which is the best iteration of the turtles I've ever experienced) and it destroyed any nostalgia I had for the original series (the original film is still great though). So with my newfound infatuation with the new series, I can appreciate something on the side without fear of it "destroying my childhood" since I ALREADY DID THAT ON PURPOSE HA!

I honestly think the movie designs are fantastic for the movie they are a part of. Would I want leaner designs and more Japanese influence sometime down the line? Sure, but I'm not going to nitpick what the movie isn't and instead, appreciate what it is. And what it is is a new TMNT film with some of the best CG I've ever seen and the humor and personalities are spot on. If you don't think so and instead choose to reminisce about "cowabunga" and "gnarly dude", that's on you.

Yep. This looks really fun and you're right, the CGI work is terrific. It's sad that so many people are so incredibly hung up on Bay's name being anywhere around it, and most people do in fact think he directed. Not that I'm saying it's going to be good, but I haven't really seen anything that suggests that it's going to be a "trainwreck" either.

If anyones interested the new $10 DVDs for the Nick cartoon at Walmart have stickers on them for a free movie pass. I bought one and took the sticker off another.

Honestly the designs are horrible, their clothing amplify that, and watching the first trailer its obvious that Bay has had a lot of say in the feel for this movie. That said - after getting past the initial shock - the new trailers are looking better. The humor, action and cgi all look great.

The real problem I feel is I'm not sure if I want this to fail and have TMNT live action movies lost for a while or succeed and this ugly over-designed mess be TMNT live action for the next ten years. Personally I think the turtles deserve better but the first movie still is great so I cant complain.

Right. I'm excited at the notion of it and I've seen more that I like than don't.

If a mod gives me permission, I will post scans of "over-designed" turtles from the past from that visual history book.

That's totally fair, but the way I see it, they're big mutated turtles that can fight. This isn't really something where I demand some sort of high concept design aesthetic. I think it works as their accessories are very makeshift like they dug them out of the trash (which is probable) and just have and work with what they can find. I think it's a small but nice departure.

OMG these TV spots are astounding. This movies is going to have me peeing in my pants.

Can we get the OP updated with all these glorious TV spots?

Edit: " Oh my gosh, they have guns!" I could listen to that over and over it makes me giggle.

Regarding that behind the scenes: Wow at that action scene! And that Mikey triple kick thing where he lands surprised saying he meant to do that is badass and hilarious at the same time. I'm stoked. My four year old is excited too.

@AuthenticM: Definitely give the new show a chance. For action, check out the episode titled "Never say Xever" (this episode features my favorite fighting scene in anything). For drama, atmosphere, and action (and spoilers that'll hook you) check out the latest episode "Vengeance is Mine". For humor, check out some of the "best of Mikey/Leo/Donnie" vids on youtube.

“William Fichtner isn’t Shredder,” Liebesman teases. “[Fichtner] is Eric Sachs. Shredder is played by another actor. He’s not all CG. You see him without his armor on. When he’s in the armor, there’s an actor, but he’s been augmented. Like in ‘Iron Man,’ it’s CGI.”

“He’s maybe wearing the shoulder pads and then we extend the suit everywhere,” adds Form. “There was a helmet that could be worn, but most of it is done in the computer.”

The pair also said that the film will run just under 100 minutes and promised that we “might even hear” some of the original cartoon’s theme song in some manner. The end credits, too, will offer a “very, very fun song.” Mostly, though, their primary goal is to capture the overall tone of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and deliver it in a manner that will palatable for new audiences.

So has there been an official statement to why the guy who does the mo-cap for Leonardo isn't doing his voice? All the others are, correct?

Still kinda confused why they swapped out Leonardo's voice with Knoxville. The actor's voice seems like it would have fit just fine as opposed to the pushing-50 host of MTV's Jackass.

That said - Knoxville's voice seems to fit okay anyway.

They didn't like his voice, went with a more recognizable name?

Same thing with Splinter. None of the motion captured actors were guaranteed to have their voices used in the final cut.

If it were closer to 80-85 minutes, yeah, I'd agree, but I think something like 95 minutes isn't "super-short" at all.

used to be that was the sweet spot for big dumb action movies, really. Keep it movin'.

I'd take a tight and lean 95 mins over 2 and half hour bloated messes where nothing happens for 45 mins in the middle of the movie.

The run time is supposedly 87 minutes.

The first two original films are around 90 minutes. I wouldn't expect much more to be honest, or want it.

Absolutely agree. I feel like every action-y blockbuster movie I have went to see in the past few years I've walked away feeling like there could have been at least 30 minutes trimmed off of it. All movies don't need to be 2+ hours.

I think 1hr45min is a perfect sweet spot. But 90/100min is fine. The vibes i'm getting from the trailers/spots is the movie is 100% focused on the Turtles instead of being split with 10 shitty human stories.

So the exact opposite of the Transformers movies. Nice.

I'd prefer a little closer to the 2 hour mark, that way they'd have a little more time for some character stuff, but I'm not surprised at the runtime given past turtle films.

Look at the first turtles film (1990), Raph gets some great development, but most of the other turtles are shafted -- ESPECIALLY Donatello who we barely learn anything about. Doesn't get to do any techy gadget stuff or anything. A complete waste!

At least in the 2014 movie trailers we hear Don speak some geek, and then there's that whole lump of tech he carries around on his back, so they are unlikely to be making that same mistake this time. But we'll see!
