PAL Charts - Week 29, 2014

It might be a useless comparison if you measure revenue but by that measure Minecraft would still come out on top. It'll be interesting to see if Minecraft ends up the best selling game (both in terms of units and revenue) for PS4/XBO.

Actually it won't.

Nintendo really needs to get on the Minecraft thing with 3DS and Wii U. They should make a deal to develop their own special version like they did with Tetris and Sim City back in the day.

If a 127% increase from Pokemon Black sends it from off the chart to #14, those spots must be pretty low

....I wonder, how much is that top SKU anyway

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

WD, all versions combined, is around 10,000 units, given the estimates we have.

Actually it won't.

Well, if you measure box per box it won't come out on top either. I meant in the long run. The higher priced games might earn more in the short run. Minecraft will just keep on running with those long legs and beat them all in the end, just give it time.

It's Monday morning and I haven't had my coffee yet. Can anyone remind me How and If hardware numbers are tracked in PAL territories?

Sort of, but we get numbers very rarely. Often comes from interviews with N/M/S execs, or yearly reports from the SELL or BIU (FRA and GER respectively).

So there is nothing like NPD/Media Create to give actually numbers in PAL or the UK for hardware? Sorry, I've been here a long time now, but I completely forget.. work sucks...

The equivalent is GfK. they don't publicly release numbers. But we do get them sometimes, as I said, from SELL of BIU for instance.

I think we had hints about this, especially considering a Japanese publishing deal. We'll see...

In my local supermarkets (Tesco, Asda) the Titanfall bundle is the only way to buy an Xbox One. It's really odd.

I went there the other day looking for the Kinectless one, but all you can buy is the Titanfall one.

Very true. I purchased an Xbone yesterday from Argos, this was the stand alone without kinect but one of the offers was to have Titanfall for free.

Didn't need it due to already having it on pc, but nothing beats free lol.

Is there any reason to suggest why X360 has been outpacing the PS3 version of mincecraft for the last two weeks?

Last Week

Watchdogs - 19 Spots
Wolf:TNO - 8 Spots
COD:G - 7 Spots
Fifa 14 - 8 Spots
Sniper Elite 3 - 7 Spots
UFC - 20 Spots
BF4 - Unknown XB1 unranked in top 40

This week

Watchdogs - 27 Spots
Wolf:TNO - 16 Spots
COD:G - 11 Spots
Fifa 14 - 11 Spots
Sniper Elite 3 - 16 Spots
UFC - Unknown XB1 unranked in top 40
BF4 - Unknown XB1 unranked in top 40

Difference change

Watchdogs - ↑
Wolf:TNO - ↑
COD:G - ↑
Fifa 14 - ↑
Sniper Elite 3 - ↑
UFC - ↑
BF4 - Unknown XB1 unranked in top 40

All differences are PS4 sku > XB1 sku

Pokemon BW charting after all these years, despite selling very well in the first place, and there being a direct sequel on the same console and the next game in the series on the next console is very strong proof that games are way too expensive here and prices play a huge role in low sales.

Because there are more 360s in the UK than PS3s?

Look at this

Week 28

PS3 - 2
Xbox360 - 1

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=854734&highlight=

Week 29 - This week

PS3 - 2
Xbox360 - 1

So apart from the last two weeks there has been only one other time (Week 26) when X360 version sold more since the PS3 debuted which is why am asking.

My local Sainsbury's has an MK8 bundle on the shelf. They haven't stocked the Wii U since about 3 months after launch. Oooooooooh.

Too fucking right. That's probably why Minecraft is consistently at the top of the sales charts compared to the Lego games, for example.

I do wonder how MK8 sales will fare once the promotion ends. Not saying that all the sales are just people making use of the offer but I'd imagine there's a notable percentage.

Also, I wonder how the Vita version of Minecraft will perform or a hypothetical Wii U version.

Said this before but it's great to see wolfie continue to chart. Deserves good sales.

In the UK, MS really seems to have lost significant marketshare. That has to be worrisome

Probably only in East Midlands Sainsbury's, though.
No doubt we're the centre of the Wii U-niverse.

It's interesting (to me) because they dropped the Wii U hard. Even slashed prices on 1st party titles. Was quite the surprise to see an MK8 bundle and a handful of titles on t'shelf.

Sainsury's slash like crazy on all entertainment products after a while, they're great. But I don't blame them, honestly. Supermarkets only cater to the super-mainstream, especially where games are concerned, and it was valuable floor space being used for, well, nothing at the time.

There's definitely a sense that Nintendo is starting to become relevant in the UK again, if only a little. Considering where they've been for the last 18 months though, that's a huge step.

In regards to software for the XBone, it really doesn't look like the new SKU (if it has given the hardware a sales boost here) has helped with people picking up any games. You wouldn't even have known there was a new SKU going off the software charts, it's just been business as usual and weeks later the games are slipping further behind their PS4 counterparts or having less games in the Top 40.

Fair enough the XBone hasn't had any killer software (as in exclusives) in a while to help the situation, but still third party stuff isn't doing all that well. UFC gone from the chart already and WatchDogs looking dangerously close to falling off soon whilst the PS4 version is still riding high in the Top 10 (though admittedly bundles will be helping some what with that too).

With nothing major over August on the XBone, it's going to be a tough month ahead too. September should see some pick up (in general anyways) with FIFA (which will probably get exclusive bundles) and Destiny coming out as well (though not in anyway the same impact it will have on PS4).

Which speaking of the Destiny PS4 bundle, is there going to be one for the black console? Seems weird that there wouldn't be as well. I have only seen the bundle with the white... and that being Game exclusive will hamper the sales and reach somewhat.

The popularities of these games also plays a huge factor into those things. Price matters for sure, but that isnt the only thing that matters. I'm sure there are games that are priced cheaper than Minecraft and Pokemon, yet those games doesnt even enter the Top 40 anymore, and the main reason for that is because those games arent popular enough to warrant much higher sales despite being priced low.

As a recent reader of the PAL charts, I found two things that kind of surprised me (both related to Germany).

1. Is Germany really into One Piece? The week it released, it was #3 on the charts for the PS3. Even the Wii U version actually hit #15, beating the 3DS version its first week (it dropped off the charts soon after though).
2. It seems to me that the Wii U fans buy quite a few games. If a game releases, sometimes (in the first week though), their owners actually seem to rush out and buy the game to some extent. Lego Movie actually charted higher on Wii U than PS3, 3DS and 360 which surprised me.

Germany can't get enough of Ruffy and Lorenor Zorro.

Meanwhile, with the Vita, BL2 is first and KZ:M is second. We need another FPS.
We need a Fallout 3 port.

We aren't getting any more 'big' FPS for the Vita, I wouldn't have thought. I'm surprised that Gameloft have never thrown a 'Modern Combat' shaped bone to the Vita.

Germany's always been really into One piece. It's of the few countries outside Japan that really are. Plus the dub of the anime was actually decent over there.

then why isnt the Top Ten always covered with 5 to 20£ Games? Useless Statement. Minecraft sold more units this week with 2 different SKUs than MK8, it was more popular, thats it.

Is this question serious? The answer is because no console games are usually released at £12.
The console games that fall to that price, assuming they're decent games, usually do chart again, but of course, since the majority of the sales are made at full price in the first months for them, they can't just stay there for eternity.

It's obvious and well-known that Minecraft is a game with long legs and a big seller. But, it has a very different price point, which itself defines a broader target user.

If you want I can show you how some £1 mobile games sold more than Minecraft last week, but I'm not sure what's the point.

Mobile games are not tracked here, Minecraft and MK8 are.
Minecraft has sold more than 54 Million copys on all available Platforms. Mk8 must propably sell 10 Million units to get the same profit.

So whats your point? EXACTLY! Why are you trying to block out Minecraft in the charts (B-But its not even fullprice, doesnt count!)

MY Point is: If the 12 pounds pricepoint is the reason for the success of Minecraft, why isnt everyone doing it? Would MK8 sell 5 times more? (with the equivalent rise of Hardware sales)

man, you're literally jumping from one thing to another. I was answering to "then why isnt the Top Ten always covered with 5 to 20£ Games? "

Mobile games are not tracked here, Minecraft and MK8 are.
Minecraft has sold more than 54 Million copys on all available Platforms. Mk8 must propably sell 10 Million units to get the same profit.
As you said, Minecraft is available on PC, iOS, Android, 360, PS3. So what's the point of this kind of revenue comparison... it sure beats me. Maybe Nintendo should release Mario Kart on other platforms to increase revenue... :)

So whats your point? EXACTLY! Why are you trying to block out Minecraft in the charts (B-But its not even fullprice, doesnt count!)
It's no bu-bu, it's because it's not an industry standard by any means. It's not "Minecraft and Mario Kart", it's "Minecraft and console games"
Again, mobile games are not in this chart, but it doesn't mean that they don't exist.
What if they were in this chart? Would you make the same posts about Temple Run 2 at the top of chart and "why isnt everyone doing it" ?
Should we keep comparing apple to oranges? If you feel like it, all right.

MY Point is: If the 12 pounds pricepoint is the reason for the success of Minecraft, why isnt everyone doing it? Would MK8 sell 5 times more? (with the equivalent rise of Hardware sales)
I guess I'll leave to yourself to realize the (obvious) answer. "Why isn't everyone doing it"?
oh, I wonder :)

If you can't see the collateral effects that selling Mario Kart 8 at £12 would have then I can't help you.
Also, do you have any data about the correlation between Minecraft sales and hardware sales push?

SmokyDave

Member
If these charts did cover mobile games, Minecraft would be at the top there as well. It's a phenomenon.

I also speculate that even if it was a full priced release, it'd still be selling like crack.

So it seems that Tomodachi Life is #1 in Germany, followed by Minecraft PS3.

Also it seems we're losing the Finnish and Swedish charts - they haven't been updated in 2 weeks now :(

Paywalled?

That's a shame, hope it's not something that spreads.

I don't think so. The link is still perfectly working, ut's just that the last update was for week 27. Well I guess no one really cared about Sweden and Finland anyway :p

Well I guess we still potentially have this, but it's stuck at week 27 too...
http://angi-nordic.com/charts/

Chart Track is a bit worrying. First Denmark was transfered to GfK Nordic, who used to have Norway, Sweden and Denmark available, but then stopped. Then they stopped releasing Irish charts too.
