TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

I have the feeling ps4 will monitor and report to psn the percentage of people playing in 30fps + better visuals VS 60fps + inferior visuals and then decide upon the best compromise for future games.

60fps only for me. Won't even consider 30fps option. One impacts both visuals and gameplay, other is just a visual flourish.

Given your gameplay style of slowly walking through and enjoying the scenery and level of detail, I would have imagined you would have gone for the better shadows.

I don't know how this wouldn't make everyone happy. Both camps get what they want! All console developers should do this going forward.

Just develop/optimize at 60fps, and then crank up some extra details for a locked 30fps mode.

30/60 fps toggle. /bows to Naughty Dog

People wan't it all. I guess thats not too surprising when I think about it. I'd admit that on PC I always want everything at the max and sometimes feel left out when I cant. That being said, choice is good. I'm actually pretty happy about this.

I mean yeah, I know, this was mainly a comment to many of the people way back believing we would get 1080p 60fps games that look dramatically better with graphical effects and shininess.

We kind of are. PS4/XB1 games do look much better than last gen games if you really compare them in your livingroom no mater what the resolution or fps is.

Not sure if it's just me or if someone else is slightly annoyed, but I just have this feeling like they could of done much more with this remaster...

If 343i can put H1 + H1A upped to 1080/60, H2 + H2Remake (also 1080/60) + Halo 3 upped to 1080/60, Halo 4 upped to 1080/60... Also have them run their OLD engines along with the new engines AND be able to switch back and forth for nostalgic reasons... then I don;t see why ND couldn't have at least made the game somewhat better.

Also, before anyone says well they only had 1 year and they were also working on Uncharted you've got to realize that 343i done all that I listed in 2 years (I'm guessing they started work after Halo 4 as they did say that was the last Halo game in the new trilogy for last gen) AND they are also working on Halo 5.

Yes, I know it's a remaster and it won't look HUGELY different, but it just seems like they didn't put in as much effort...

Keep in mind Halo 2 came out on the original Xbox.

The real comparison would be to look at Halo 4 running in the Master Chief Collection.

Even though I walk through artistically astonishing games slowly, I still require the superior framerate for any gameplay moment I participate in. It's not only far more attractive to look at in general and creates a superior look in every aspect of its presentation, much easier on the eyes... but it functions to a gameplay benefit as well.

Walking through a game slowly by the way wouldn't actually impact the benefit of 60fps anyhows :p

I will never in my life choose 30fps over 60fps. Never never ever.

A visual only graphics setting that is the first thing people turn down on pc to achieve the framerate they want.

Seems fine to me

60 fps or 30 fps with some demanding shadows/AO , wish more games did that on consoles

The casual gamer doesn't even know that you can change this, so most people are going with the default.

That's not how it works. 60fps is in sync to your screen's refresh rate, so it is very noticeable when it drops below.

I'm not an expert, but:

Since the screen's refresh rate is evenly divisible by 30, the same should be true at 30 fps.

And judder is an effect caused by frametime fluctuations, regardless of whether the average frame rate stays the same. So even if your premise of 'in sync with refresh rate' were correct, I would have thought that that argument better would have better applied to changes in average frame rate than to judder specifically.

They'd be crazy not to, but most people wont' change it from the default I'm sure, especially since 60 is the default.

I would never in a million years trade 30 more fps for better shadows but I guess it's cool they did something more with the extra power they were afforded by having that option.

This sentence makes no sense. 60 fps adds a lot to visual fidelity

Yep animation being one of them but people don't seem to care .
Effects more important to a lot of people it seems.

Oh my God...

I am a little surprised why those high quality shadows cant be done at 60fps on the PS4

The 60fps version has better shadows than the PS3 version just that the 30fps version has even better ones.

It's higher quality shadows at 30, as in better than 60. Not "good shadows at 30, fucking bullshit quality shadows at 60."

"High quality shadows" doesn't have a specific universal meaning.

That's cool. Glad they're giving us options.

Gonna be hard to make a decision, though. I might just stick with the 60fps and see if I don't like the shadows.

I don't really have a problem with it. I'll be playing it at 60fps, but if I want to explore the world and take screens (or anything like that), I'll probably just lock it at 30fps. Nice to have options! ;-)

Unless he means the definition of fidelity as in "the degree of exactness with which something is copied or reproduced." In which case I guess 30fps would be better fidelity in regard to the game its remastering.

How good looking is this game, you ask? Well, I normally watch Netflix while having lunch. Today, I'm watching The Last of Us Remastered cinematics.

I might try tricking family into thinking I'm watching a film to see if they fall for it.

pip pip cheerio you slags!
Need comparison picks, but I feel like 60fps will be the go to regardless, as the visual fluidity from is more than likely gonna be worth shittier shadows.

If you move through a game very slowly, it actually adds very little. Like if you just walk forward slowly through a game like this, anyone would struggle to even tell a difference in framerate. For a more hectic action when you run and swing camera all over the place, it of course adds a lot.

I'll play it half and half because I'll never be satisfied with either and I can never decide on shit like this. This is one of the reasons why I don't do PC gaming, I can't stop tweaking if you let me.

From the article:

I’m going to take this opportunity to tell you that this is single-handedly the best looking console game I’ve ever played, with or without the 30 FPS lock enabled. You are in for a treat.

HNNNNG.

yep! this is why I'm a little annoyed with this

I don't think 60fps is essential to the experience. Even solid 30fps at 1080p would be a huge step up from the PS3 version and the shadows would be icing on the cake.

30fps for me.
