Chrono Trigger: Chrono, Ayla, Frog
All three of them are heavy hitters in their own right and have arguably the best selection of dual techs in the game.

Pokémon: Empoleon, Jolteon, Gliscor, Mismagius, Heracross, Tyranitar
This was the team I used throughout Gen IV. Despite having some obvious flaws, I chose movesets that allowed them to counter the standard meta team nicely. DD-Tyranitar worked wonders with a babiri berry.

Xenoblade: Shulk/Melia, Dunban, 7th.

Shulk and Melia were the only characters I enjoyed controlling and couldn't be trusted to the AI. Dunban's Blossom Dance quote justified his place alone. 7th was the shiny toy who just happened to be flashier than Sharla/Riki/REYN TIME.

"It's a long story, but if you get yourself a drink, I'll be glad to tell it.

A sergeant I was, in the garrison here at Jelkala. Twenty years I stood guard for the city, taking many a hard knock in many a tough fight, until they appointed a snot-nosed, downy-lipped princeling, barely out of his mother's cradle, as commander of the garrison. He came upon me standing watch atop the tower, with my crossbow unstrung -- on account of the rain, you see... Can't have the cord loosen... But Little Prince Snot-Nose tells me that an unstrung bow is dereliction of duty. Says he'll have me horsewhipped. And something in me snapped. So I walked off my post.

Now I'm here getting drunk, and the Devil take tomorrow."

Shulk, Dunban and Seven in Xenoblade .

Shulk as the playable character (I find his debuffs/side and back attacks are just too powerful and important to let the AI take care of it.

Dunban as an avoidance tank in medium armour.

Seven as pure damage dealer.

Everyone geared for maximum strength and agility with double attack maxed as much as possible, depending on fight specifics.

Though you aren't really given much choice in the matter, playing with Laguna, Kiros and Ward was a breath of fresh air compared to the angsty melodrama, nonsensical storytelling devices, and 2-dimensional archetypes of Final Fantasy VIII's "main" cast and scenario.

For those of you who haven't played FFVIII, you periodically play through weird dream sequences as Laguna, a hilariously awkward (but deeply human!) writer drafted into the military, as well as his two squadmates, Kiros and Ward. Their adventures include regularly getting lost, accidentally getting elected president of the most technologically advanced country on the planet, and watching Laguna's leg cramp up while trying to talk to the girl he likes.

They're funny, believable (minus everything around them), work incredibly well off of eachother, and since all of the characters in VIII play the same sans Limit Breaks, a fixed party of three doesn't make you feel like you're leaving anyone out of the mix.

The party is grounded and charming, and Laguna is easily my favorite Final Fantasy character. Just a shame theyre trapped in one of my least favorite entries in the series.

ward2.png

Came to post this. I find the older i get the more i prefer Laguna and his crew over the actual main characters of the game.

Would pay full price for a "Final Fantasy VIII1/2" all bout their wacky adventures. Maybe in an episodic format? Is there any way we can get an exec from Square and TellTale in an elevator together? Worked for Kingdom Hearts.

Squall/Zell/Irvine in FFVIII.

Physical damage outdoes magic in this game, so the girls don't get used much unless I'm playing a low level game. Dark Ammo and "Armageddon fist" makes boss fights a joke.

Cloud/Cid/Yuffie in FFVII

All three characters get early multi-hit limit breaks, and can handle magic well.

FFIX...I usually use Dane/Freya/Quina/Steiner.

The former three all have cap-hitting attacks that are calculated independently from their actual stats, meaning you can walk into the final dungeon with start of game equipment and sleepwalk through fights. Steiner starts hitting regularly for 9999 once you hit around level 50 or so, and that's before you give him X-killer S-abilities

Xenoblade: Dunban, Shulk, Riki.
Dunban can't be hit, Shulk can do anything, Riki has the most HP and has tons of moves. The other characters are irrelevant

Chrono Trigger: Robo/Frog/Ayla

Marle and Lucca are useless, and Magus is so incompatible with everyone else (and you get him late) that he's not worth dealing with

FFVI: Doesn't matter, if you're not doing quicked doublecasted 1 MP Ultima on everything, or haven't given someone the master's scroll, genji glove, and their strongest weapon, you're doing it wrong

Aureon

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
VII: Cloud \ Barrett \ Red
VIII: Squall \ Rinoa \ Zell
IX: Zidane \ Steiner \ Garnet \ Vivi (My man, OP. Although, i've done 18 playthroughs, i think i've done _nearly_ all decent party combinations at this point, including a zero-heals run at a certain point and some other trickery)
X: Auron\Wakka\Yuna.
XII: Balthier \ Ashe \ Basch
XIII: Lightning\Fang\Hope

FFT: Two ninja, four arithmeticians. I like cheating.

And outside of FF: ME, Garrus+Any. Fuck yeah, Garrus.

I'm quite fond of this one:

67px-RPGMario.png
86px-SMRPG_Peach.gif
74px-Geno_SMRPG.gif

(Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars)

I would love to say Mario, Bowser and Geno but Peach's healing is so damn useful. She is so cruel benching my favorite characters like that. I am too weak willed to say no though :(

I pretty much always rotate my characters. I just hate leaving anyone out if I can avoid it, but there are a few exceptions...

CT: Crono, Frog and Ayla. Dat triple Tech.
FF8: Laguna's crew has already been mention so I'll go with the my regular party, Squall, Zell and Rinoa. I didn't actually like Zell, but his fucking limit break was awesome(and i preffered spamming limit breaks over GFs so that was important to me)

Wow.... That is all I can think of. Pretty much every other game I try to keep full team balanced, even to the point where it makes the game way harder. I think even my last attempt to play through vanilla FFT ended in failure because my characters didn't have enough levels for a storyline battle and I didn't feel like doing any more grinding(I've beaten the game before so w/e). I actually prefer it this way, keeping all my allies at the same level automatically is just the most boring thing to me.

I love the dynamic of every character in this game. And this to me is the perfect party.

(I really hope that image isn't huge. I'm on mobile. I stole it from a post above.)

Baldur's Gate:

Both of these guys are frankly awesome. Give him a large sword and some armour and he's the best berserker ever. He's also very kind, and extremely entertaining. Because "Go for the eyes!!!"

xzar.jpg

By all accounts, Xzar isn't a particularly practical choice for a party. But he's my favourite character in the series. A complete lunatic with very interesting dialogue, and I like it that way. Also has an interesting story, and I like him paired with Montaron.
Why didn't he return as a party member for the sequel... >:c

Yukari, Aki and Aigis. (Aigis is sadly not in the pic :( )

Exactly the same for me.

I substituted Aigis with Koromaru during my P3P FeMC playthrough to mix things up at least a bit but Yukari, Akihiko and Aigis is the best P3 party for me.

Yukiko, Yosuke and Kanji for P4.

Pokémon I try to mix up a bit especially since depending on the game there's different ones available, though I often have an Eevee evolution on there, usually Vaporeon, Jolteon or Umbreon.

Not sure if they count since they're only availible together, but Laguna/Kiros/Ward are the best for their banter. Makes me wish it were a PS2 RPG with in-battle dialog almost.
