Domestic Disturbance (2001) was the last time I saw Vince Vaughn in anything serious

I think he'd be okay. I don't know if anyone would be able to take him seriously though.

I like all three of those casting rumors. Casting against type can often work to great effect so Vaughn could be very interesting in the role. Farrell's shown off his dramatic chops a number of times before, as well as an ability to bounce really well off of a co-lead. And Taylor Kitsch given some uncompromisingly dark and literate material to work with may well churn out something memorable (he apparently gave a solid dramatic performance in Lone Survivor, but I haven't seen it).

he was ok in Lone Survivor, didn't do a bad job but also hasn't give an outstanding performance.

Such an odd trio for sure, but until given reason not to, I have full faith in Pizza Man. Vaughn taking the first dramatic turn he has in years could be actually excellent.

I don't really care who gets cast in this, but are they still doing the whole Pynchon thing? because that sounded really fun.

I'm not so sure. It depends how they choose to continue the thread of True Detective. I assume there will be more in common than just the name. What drew people in was the unique way the story was being told, wondering how the past affected the present allowed the actors to give really deep performances. If they have bad actors in the same scenario it might well look like a cheap rip-off, if everything is changed then it will bear no relation to the first season. I don't think Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will be as believable as detectives in the dramatic style of the show. It would be hard for anyone since McConaughey and Harrelson set the standard of what a True Detective is.

Fargo faced a similar issue, they chose to have analogous characters and a similar story. Changing mediums helped too. Everything was familiar enough that they now a have a platform for the second season that offers more freedom from the source material.

After season 2 people should know what True Detective is. Hopefully the answer is a compelling investigation with unique characters played by terrific actors. Nothing tied to flashbacks or interviews or investigating the occult.

Elizabeth Moss and Michelle Forbes are also in talks to join the cast, Moss as the fourth female lead and Forbes in a supporting role

Andrew Dominik is rumored to direct some of season 2, though may not be able to because of scheduling conflicts

First synopsis:

“The second season of True Detective will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt City Manager of a fictional California city who’s found brutally murdered amidst a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change the freeway gridlock in California. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought.

Caspar’s 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of the PCH near Big Sur—his eye burned out, genitals cut off and satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the Occult.”

I've said this numerous times, but...I think a great script/director can elevate any actor. Do I like Vince Vaughn? No. But do I think Vaughn could shine given the right role and direction, absolutely.

New thread worthy?

Remember when Nic first said that season 2 was about "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system." and there were those who said it was a joke/troll answer? :p

even though i didn't like the ending of the first season, the rest was so damn good I'll give whatever direction he's going in the benefit of the doubt

I don't really like Moss too much but Michelle Forbes is pretty good on The Killing. Overall it will be interesting to see what season two looks like with this cast. Definitely not what I'd have expected but after season one I have complete faith in Pizzolatto's ability as a showrunner.

Elizabeth Moss better not be in this. Can't stand her!!

Hell, she and Michelle Forbes are the only really interesting people who are being floated in all of these recent stories.

It really doesn't matter though, since Pizzolato's scripts were so terrible for the first season that I hold out little hope for season two.

Is this show good? I started watching the first episode but Woody's voice is incredibly annoying to me. Is the story good enough to make it worth watching? I just finished Hannibal, how does this series compare?

Many consider it the best show since The Wire (or Breaking Bad). So I think most will tell you it's worth watching. However, it something as trivial as Woody's voice turns you off, not sure it's the kind of show for you.

Wow, high praise. Guess I might as well.

At least worth a shot? I guess try 3-4 episodes and see how you feel about it. It's only 8 episodes long (the season has a self-contained story that ends in 8 episodes. Next season will be a new cast/story). But if you get 4 episodes in and just absolutely loathe it, then I guess move on.

Not every show is for everyone I guess.

Farrell and Kitsch would be fine to me. They're good actors, not as bad as some of the shit they've been in.

Vince Vaughn...I dunno, not a big fan. But I guess it's all just rumours right now.

That synopsis sounds awesome. Not that I ever wasn't, but I'm totally in for S2.

I wonder when they intend to air it. It took about 9 months from principal photography to airing for S1. If you hold that for S2......could it maybe air Summer 2015? Taking True Blood's slot?

Considering they don't seem to have actually signed directors yet, it's going to be a while I think. Not really expecting it anytime before late 2015 myself. Could be replacing the debut window that Boardwalk Empire usually has maybe?

Someone on Reddit posted an idea about the synopsis:

I did some digging around and I found this story that could very well be Pizzolatto's basis for season 2 of True Detective. What do you think?

The main investigation in season two could revolve around the dismantling of public transportation trolley lines by National City Lines, Inc. (NCL)beginning in the 1930s in what is also known as the Great American streetcar scandal. The contracted transit company NCL was a front company—organized by General Motors' Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. in 1922, reorganized in 1936 into a holding company—for the express purpose of acquiring local transit systems throughout the United States, but once NCL purchased a transit company, electric trolley service was immediately discontinued, the tracks quickly pulled up, the wires dismantled, and General Motors buses replaced the trolleys. Land around the Los Angeles area was also a hot commodity due to impending freeway construction.
Other wealthy individuals were also involved in this scandal, one major player being a Los Angeles judge who was also the silent owner of Cloverleaf Industries, which bought out the Pacific Electric system of trolley cars in 1945.

After Marvin Acme, the eccentric owner of a large tract of land (as well as the original Acme factory, yes, there was a real Acme factory!), near what is today central Los Angeles, was found dead of very mysterious and grizzly circumstances in 1947, his will was never found though he most certainly had one. A close friend claimed that Acme’s will stipulated that the ownership of the property should pass to the residents of his land, an isolated group, which many in the surrounding areas believed to have mysterious and inhuman abilities. The judge, despite (or perhaps because of) being born and raised by this mysterious cult, began using his power to not only keep those residents from owning the land but to remove them from the land altogether. On the business side, his company made an offer to purchase the Acme factory, which, while not located on the land in question, was being sold to the highest bidder in a package along with the land due to the lack of a will and legislation passed by the judge himself (legislation which was repealed just a few years later). On the private side, more dead bodies began to show up in grizzly and unexplainable murder scenes, many involving acid, which were mainly kept out of the press by the Judge’s ties to local authorities.

I won’t reveal everything that happened, you can read up on it for yourself if you want, and I’m sure some things will be changed around by Pizzolatto, but I think it’s a safe bet that this is the basis for the story we’ll see. The question that still remains, though, is who will play the two main investigators?

I laughed, anyway.

The better performance in that cast imo, oddly enough he was the only one not nominated

Wasn't a fan of the movie though, the main character was a bit outrageous

I thought the incredible hulk was quite good. Riggins was pretty competent though.
